Maker's Mark Cellar Aged debuted in 2023 to much acclaim and it was announced that this would be an annual limited release from the brand, showcasing the best of their aged whisky stocks. When we reviewed 2024 version of this bourbon(E192), it became clear that the profile of this whisky would be different each year. Fast forward to the current episode - we taste and review the 2025 version of cellar which is comprised of 11, 13, and 14 year old whiskies and comes in at 112.9 proof. When we reviewed the previous batches, we were overly complementary and rightfully so. But how does the new 2025 batch taste? You'll have to listen to find out. In this episode, we are joined by our friend and community leader, Rip N' Sips. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyJoin our community on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheMashUpBourbonPodcastPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!
Despite the fact that we are behind when it comes to tasting all the blind samples that members of our community have sent, in this week's short, we tackle two blinds that were sent in from Kris. Can we guess age, proof, and distillate once again? Trying things blind is one of our favorite things to do, even though it's incredibly tough. We are thankful to Kris for providing these samples and we hope you enjoy listening to us work through what's in our glasses.
Even though we tend to gravitate toward our own state when it comes to brown liquid, we got a lot of love for our neighbors to the south in Tennessee. Jack Daniel's is a brand that is steeped in history and tradition and we've been delighted at how they've expanded their offerings in recent years. In this episode, we taste and review the brand new Jack Daniel's Heritage offering which is a toasted single barrel whiskey. To create this whiskey, Jack Daniel's uses barrels that have a high toast/low char technique which are then filled with 100 proof liquid and aged for 7 years at the highest part of the warehouse. The end result? You'll have to listen to find out. This was once a limited release and now Jack has plans to release it annually. Is this once limited bottle worth having on your radar. We'll give you the lowdown.
For this week's short, we focus on Stranahan's recent "Founder's Release" which is a blend of 8-11 year American Single Malt Whiskey finished for 1-4 years in ex-Bourbon and ex-Blonde ale casks. Carrying a 12 year age statement and coming in at 120 proof, this whiskey is like nothing we've ever tasted before. Is that a good or bad thing? You'll have to listen to find out. Special thanks to our listener Ryan for providing us with this sample of this pour for the episode.
In the very first episode of The Mash Up Podcast, we tasted and reviewed Sazerac Rye. Just a few short years and a couple episodes later, we were delighted to hear that Saz/BT was releasing a 100 proof version of this rye whiskey. Developed in response to demand from bartenders and whiskey enthusiasts, this innovative expression is designed to offer enhanced flavor, versatility and control in cocktail creation while maintaining the smooth, approachable profile that defines Sazerac Rye. So how does it taste? But more importantly, how does it taste next to the classic "baby Saz." Give a us a listen and you'll find out. This episode is full of surprises. A mystery guest host, unexpected pours, and as always, a lot of fun. Bardstown Bourbon Company has quickly established itself as a juggernaut in Kentucky bourbon production. Even though they will run the still for just about anyone, they are also doing some very innovative things with blending and wood finishing. This most recent distillery reserve release is a blend of 9- to 18-year-old whiskeys from Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee that are blended and finished for 28 months in Hokkaido Mizunara Oak Barrels. The results? You'll just have to listen to find out. We would like to thank our good buddy Jason from Arsenic Culture for giving us this bottle to review for this weeks short.
The Master's Keep series from Wild Turkey has been an annual release that we look forward to. This is why we were surprised to learn that the most recent release, Beacon, will be the last in the series. Beacon is meticulously blended 10 and 16 year old barrels from different places on the Wild Turkey campus. The blend showcases distillate from father and son and this is the first time that a Master's Keep bottle has included Bruce Russell. Did Wild Turkey save the best for last? You'll have to give us a listen to find out. In this episode we talk Kentucky Bourbon Festival and a lot of turkey. We also talk about recent barrel picks and upcoming releases of our picks.
This is one of the most exciting shorts we've ever recorded. David Jennings is not only a good friend of the podcast, but he is also the proprietor or Caleb's Crossing and Raconteur Rye. This coincides with the newest releases from both brands. The fourth releases from Raconteur are actually two bottles: Gemini I (Indiana) and Gemini II (Kentucky). Both of these expressions are 95/5 ryes with different Mizunara oak finishes, but because they have different states of distillation, David & James from Woodwork invite enthusiasts to decide which one they like better. We have a consensus opinion based on our tasting and we can't wait to see what others think when they start getting their hands on these bottles. The third release from Caleb's Crossing is a Bourye (blend of bourbon and rye). After two inaugural standouts from Caleb's Crossing, we taste this one and tell you how it stacks up with the previous releases. We really appreciate David providing us with these samples. Cheers!
Burnt Church Distillery is the pride of Bluffton, South Carolina. Before it was Burnt Church, the road in the heart of Old Town Bluffton was known as Palmer’s Stretch. This rye whiskey pays tribute to the people and a specific period in time in the low country. Burnt Church was one of the brands that was part of the Hoochenanny Music and Whiskey festival that we were part of. In this episode, we taste and review the rye whiskey offering from Burnt Church and we also talk to their master distiller, Peter Thompson. Burnt Church is doing some wonderful things and they are expanding distribution by the minute. So join us this week to find out more about this up and coming distillery and their flagship products.
According to a big box retailer, Peter E Hart's Wheated Kentucky Straight Bourbon is aged 8 years and has a unique mashbill using Honey'd Wheat and Honey'd Malted Barley. Due to this unique mashbill, the flavors are said to be "robust and smooth" at a very healthy 112 proof. So how does it actually taste? We'll be the judge of that. Join us for this short as we taste and review this unique bourbon. Though it is a recent release, the name is one steeped in history and the place it was distilled is amongst the best "craft" bourbon distillers in the U.S. Cheers everyone.
You'd have to go all the way back to episode 17 to find the first time we ever tasted and reviewed anything from Nashville Barrel Company (NBC). Back then we could have never imagined that we would have our own barrel picks from NBC. Recently, Kenny took a trip down to Nashville and selected two Kelvin barrel MGP bourbons and one founders OG rye. Even though these were selected by Kenny, this episode marks the first time that we were able to get together to taste and review these. So join us this week as we talk about NBC and our recent picks from there. We still have a few left and you definitely don't want to miss out on these.
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is a signature product from Heaven Hill that first released in 2013. Typically, this release happens three times during each calendar year. The most recent release, B525 has received some very positive reviews by most in the whiskey community. In fact, many have claimed that this batch is up there with some of the all time great batches. What do think? Is this the return to greatness for ECBP? You'll have to listen to find out. We want to thank our listener Kevin H. as he sent us this entire bottle to review. Just like the last time we reviewed an ECBP, Steven makes his return to the podcast after a short absence and hilarity ensues. Has Heaven Hill finally gotten it's groove back with this most recent batch? Let us say...maybe.
Over the last couple of weeks, we've started to release our very own hand selected barrel picks. A good majority of our community has been clamoring for us to give some tasting notes and discuss what we picked. There is no sugar coating it, in this episode, we cover a lot of ground. We taste, discuss, and review our upcoming barrel picks, but we also mix in some listener blinds. This episode is definitely for the whiskey nerd or the person who likes blinding as much as we do. Give us a listen and let us know what upcoming barrel pick you are most excited for. Fort Hamilton Distillery is located in Brooklyn, New York and was founded in 2016 by Alex Clark and his wife Amy Grindeland. We caught up with this dynamic duo during our recent trip to the Hoochenanny Whiskey and Music festival. Fort Hamilton strives to make an array of spirits, but the brand was founded on the premise of creating authentic New York style rye that was popular before prohibition. In this episode, you will get to hear our interview with Alex that took place at the festival and you will also get to here our opinion of their rye whiskey once we arrived back in Kentucky and revisited it. We've never done an episode like this for the podcast and you won't want to miss it. Alex is a fascinating individual and he brings an unparalleled energy to whiskey making and his brand. We had very limited experience with Fort Hamilton before visiting NY. If you aren't familiar with Fort Hamilton, we promise you will know about them very soon because they are doing some amazing things.
You've heard us talk about Four Roses Single Barrel / Barrel Strength picks many times over. The fact that we've never reviewed one for the podcast is just plain crazy. This week, we taste and review a pick from Bros Liquor in California. Our very own Kenny Mills was part of the pick team. So, tune in to hear our thoughts about this 9.5 year, 122.4 proof OESQ recipe barrel pick. It's safe to say that OESQ isn't traditionally one of the more sought after recipes, but our thoughts on this one might catch you by surprise. In this episode, we also recap our time at the Hoochenanny Whiskey and Music Festival. We had a great time and hope you'll enjoy hearing about our experience.
We promised that we would actually stick to our word this week and record a "short" episode. However, Kenny threw in one of his classic curveballs. As you will notice, this episode is completely blind. You don't know what the bottle is so you'll just have to listen to find out what bourbon we reviewed and what we thought about it. If this works out, we might do more episodes just like this. Let us know what you think.
Michter's Legacy Series celebrates the foundational roots and heritage of the brand through two different whiskeys. Shenk's Homestead Sour Mash Whiskey honors John Shenk who founded what would become the Michter's brand all the way back in 1753. Bomberger's Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey honors the time period when the Michter's distillery was known as Bombergers. Each year, Michter's changes the wood finishing techniques and mashbills used in these whiskey to create something unique. This year is no different, but how do these whiskeys taste and how do they compare with last years releases (E199). Join us this week as we talk about traveling to NY, upcoming releases, and of course these two bottles. New Era Whiskey and Spirits (NEWS) is new and local non-distiller producer and many people have no idea who they are. Even though they been in business for a little under a year, they generated a lot of unintentional hype when one of their first releases sold for an unbelievable amount on Unicorn Auctions. For this episode, we sit down with one of the with co-founders of NEWS, Zane Brammell. Zane is known to us because he started off as a member of the whiskey community here in Lexington, Kentucky. He first founded a private pick group and then quickly turned took his passion to the next level by co-founding a bourbon business. NEWS sources barrels from many different places, but their overall goal is to get some of the best and most unique whiskey into the hands of the people who will appreciate it the most. Even though many of their releases have gone to private barrel clubs, they do have products that will soon be on retail shelves in Kentucky and in select markets across the nation. So join us this week as we sit down with Zane and learn all about NEWS. It is worth noting that we have partnered with NEWS on some barrel picks and those will be headed your way very soon. New Era Whiskey and Spirits is a company you might not be familiar with right now, but we promise you will know about them in the very near future. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyJoin our community on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheMashUpBourbonPodcastPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderCome hang with us at the the Hoochenanny Whiskey and Music Festival (Aug. 8-10) - https://hoochenanny.com/Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!
The Jim Beam distillery recently resurrected a legend and released Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond with a 7 year age statement. This return of age statements to bonded products is a recent trend that we have seen from many legacy distillers. Even though OGD used to carry an 8 year age statement, the return of the product to the shelf with an 7 year age statement and with an MSRP of $40 has been met with a lot of excitement. But how does the bourbon taste? More importantly, how does it stack up to some of it's recently released counter parts from other distilleries? Give us a listen this week to find out. It is worth noting that Kenny and Cam from Drums & Drams already did this blind and recorded it. We are working to get that video out ASAP, but the results in this episode did not match what Kenny & Cam did previously. Ohh boy. Cheers.
Once only available at the distillery in Louisville, Old Forester President's Choice is now available nationwide. Also, for the very first time, rye is now part of the lineup. Join us this week as we review the most recent bottles to release in the Old Forester President's Choice series. Donning the seal of approval from Campbell Brown (President of Old Forester), this highly sought after product is dubbed as some of the most rare and unique whiskey that is bottled at Old Forester. But how does it taste? Our take on this one will likely catch you a bit off guard. While we did enjoy these whiskeys, our thought process changed when we introduced some blinds and Anthony even traveled into some uncharted territory.
