Six months ago Into The Wild attended the Whitley Fund for Nature's People for Planet Summit in London. An event where guest speakers around the world met to discuss big topics in community based wildlife conservation. At this event we were lucky enough to meet & speak with 2015 Whitley Fund for Nature Award Winner, Jean Wiener from Haiti. This bonus episode is that very chat where Jean shares his experience of working with people & wildlife in a country like Haiti & what he feels is the best way forward to restore the natural resources for the planet, country & it's communities. One of, if not the most, tranquil places many of us can imagine being is on the bank of a river. The sound of the water moving & the visual of the ripples or crashing of water speeding past. They ground us & are essential to life so we must be looking after them in the UK right?.......RIGHT? For episode 1 of season 2 we are looking at the state of rivers in the UK. From how insects can be important indicators for determining river health, to the hard hitting truth about what we are dumping in these magnificent habitats. Guest appearances from Emma Brisdion (River Trust), Rebecca Lewis (Bug Life) & Craig MacAdam (Bug Life). What kind of podcasters would we be if we didn't treat you to a bonus episode every now & then.  This bonus episode is quite simple a lovely chat between two friends. Emma Brisdion, who has featured on Into The Wild before, had her own podcast (For What It's Earth) & is a superb science communicator, invited me to her neck of the woods, Bath, to visit her allotment & talk about the importance of these kinds of spaces for people & their connection to food. A garden, the thing many of us hope to have & I'm sure many of you fellow nerds join us in hoping to one day turn it into a beautiful space for local wildlife BUT how have gardens in the UK changed over the years? What value can they hold for nature but also for people & their wellbeing & their outlook on the natural world? In this episode, Nadia & Ryan explore the world of UK residential gardens & are joined by nature writer & presenter Kate Bradbury to learn more about gardening for wildlife. It's no secret that ever since humans have been on this planet, we have needed to use forests to survive. Whether that be for firewood, shelter or food, the forests we've lived in or around have provided for us, but how does this look in the year 2023? In this episode Ryan & Nadia explore the history of forestry in the UK & then journey to Namibia, Nepal & Guyana to learn about community forestry & the systems these countries have created to sustainably managed their forests, restore biodiversity & of course, support the communities that rely on them.  Guest appearances from: Guy Shrubsole, Kenyetu Joseph, Dr Raquel Thomas & Birendra Mahato. Learn more about Guyana's Iwokrama Forest here: Tickets for our live event on October 14th in Oxford can be found here. I think it's safe to say we all know of the climate & biodiversity crisis but how connected are the two? Well it turns out very. In this episode - Just Stop Boil - Nadia & Ryan explore how the impacts of the climate crisis have further impacts on wildlife from life in the ocean, plants in the UK & elephants in Africa. Farming is such a huge topic that we couldn't possibly fit it all into one episode, so this episode, part 2, Ryan & Nadia explore further at the different farming methods, how we've ended up where we are & finally get some answers to the big question, is it possible to grow food in the UK, for the people of the UK that is affordable, all whilst restoring our natural ecosystems? Guest appearance from Ruby Free & Sue Pritchard If you'd like to say "cheers" to the Into The Wild team & help support the show, then you can do so on www.ko-fi.com/intothewildpod To follow the hosts of the show, Ryan & Nadia, follow them at @mrryanjdalton & @buteblackbird
*deep breath* Okay, farming is a huge topic. It means very little to some people & absolutely everything to others. It's peoples culture, family, livelihood & their meaning. When we really get into the discussion, it's easy to see why. It's also easy to see that farming should matter more to the people who don't really give it much thought. In this first part, Nadia & Ryan discuss just how big farming is in the UK & why heart & soul in food really is important for us to get back to farming with nature. Guest appearance from Sue Pritchard. If there was a topic in wildlife conservation that would win an award as the biggest & most emotional & challenging, then human wildlife conflict would win. However, despite all that, in media or documentaries, we rarely see or hear much about it & what the impacts for both people & wildlife are. So strap yourself in nerds, we are about to begin the journey of learning about human wildlife conflict. From the drivers of it, the realities of it & some of the on the ground solutions to it. It's got a new co-host & we are ready to continue bringing you nature & conservation content each month.   For the first episode in this new monthly series, we are focusing on the big C word......no, stop it, we mean CONSERVATION. Starting in the UK, we explore what models are used & how we have ended up in the situation were are in, too many rules & not enough guardians maybe? Then we take a quick virtual trip to two different countries to see how conservation works there, what it means to the people within it & see how that has evolved since their colonial past.   Guest appearances from Nick Gates, Paul Powlesland, Mathen 'Rajeev' Mathew & Bupe Ritah Banda    If you'd like to say "cheers" to the Into The Wild team & help support the show, then you can do so on www.ko-fi.com/intothewildpod   To follow the hosts of the show, Ryan & Nadia, follow them at @mrryanjdalton & @buteblackbird

Regular listeners of Into The Wild will know that as part of our big project, Beyond The Trigger, we have explored community conservation in Namibia quite a bit & very recently I had the pleasure of being introduced to a wonderful person called Bupe who is studying here in England. Bupe was telling me all about the wonderful community work she is involved with her country of Zambia & very quickly I thought, I want more people to hear this. As well as representing the Zambian youth for Zambia's CBNRM (Community Based Natural Resource Management), Bupe also is involved with the Community Leaders Network across southern Africa & briefly explains what this organisation is & what it stands for. If you're into nature (& of course you are, that's why you're here right?) then photography, even just via your smart phone, is something you'll most likely try at some point, but how does that work when your subjects are......well, sometimes, tiny. This week I'm joined by nature writer & photographer of the insects Gail Ashton who sheds some light of what it takes to get up close & personal on bugs via the lens. Gail & I also take a moment to discuss why most celebrated wildlife photographers are white men & why this can easily change. You have to be pretty retarded to think you can't go outside because you're black or Asian. But hey, blame whites for it and you get on a podcast.

If there's an awful lot more in common between farmers and conservationists, then how come there's a biodiversity crisis? Pull the other one, farmers are bad news for the enviroment and too much land is given over to farmers.
