A proposed draft history curriculum for Grades 4 to 12, recently gazetted by the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, is prompting fresh debate about how South Africa’s past is taught in schools, with a shift towards more African centred content and the removal of several traditional topics. Against that backdrop, the conversation turns to which figures are remembered and which are left out of the national narrative.
