In this week's episode, we are discussing a post that you may have seen in our In Purpose Leaders Forum on Facebook.  Delaney posted a sentence starter "I can't be racist because..." and asked people to finish the sentence with phrases our members had heard from people in their lives.  As I read the comments, I was laughing until I realized how seriously people were responding to this.   I wanted to talk about it.  Why were the reactions so different? What can we learn from this? Are there even any definitive answers to be had in these situations?  Listen as we explore all of these questions.
Why didn't anyone remind me that I hadn't posted Friday's episode for you? I'm so sorry! In this episode, Delaney and I discuss some of the challenges that come with doing this work, including the challenges we ourselves have faced with In Purpose. You want to know how to respond to them? Do the work anyway!
Episode 14: Real Talk

Episode 14: Real Talk

2021-03-19--:--

A few weeks ago, Heather posted a Twitter conversation thread to her Facebook page that was an interaction between three individuals discussing the difference between the concept of "real talk" found within the black community and the communication styles found in WASP culture. This post lead to many great discussions about how these differences impact equity in workplaces and social spaces. In this episode, Katie returns and takes the lead as she discusses this topic with Delaney and Heather. How do these differ? How should we process "real talk"? What does it mean to our interracial friendships and relationships?
Delaney and Heather discuss why you must practice self-care when doing this work. Whether it is wearing your special crown or having coffee at Starbucks with your personal trophy, self-care is whatever makes you feel renewed and ready to dive into the fray! How do you practice self-care?
Heather Fleming and Delaney Rhea discuss the histories of both Black Lives Matter and the Thin Blue Line while exploring if the two have to be mutually exclusive or if there is room for people to both support their law enforcement officers while fully engaging in policy change to ensure that Black Lives Matter.
Heather and Delaney dive deep into a conversation about media portrayal of Black trauma and Afro-pessimism and also discuss the importance of stories that promote positive Afro-futurism.
Delaney and Heather discuss how important food is within cultures and religions and the importance of respecting and understanding how that relationship is tied to equity.

The example of being a Christian is not the same, as Christians are in a position of power in this country. It’s similar to wondering if white people should be offended by a non-white person having a symbol of whiteness (??) in their house. Not equivalent at all. Also, Christianity is not the only religion that follows Jesus. Muslims also do. Thank you for this content!! Great podcast.
