Description
From 1988-1994, Sassy was the coolest magazine going for Gen-X teens. Celebrate that golden time by joining Tara Ariano, Pamela Ribon and David T. Cole for a deep dive into every one of its 80 glorious issues and remember what it was like hanging out with Jane, Christina, Catherine, Karen, and the whole crew, learning What Now, What Next, and so much more!

We know this issue landed in mid- to late July, but can it ever be too early to start thinking about your back-to-school wardrobe? Sassy invites you to imagine yourself as a Coco Chanel knockoff, an intimidatingly cool biker chick, or a face and a couple of limbs with monochromatic garments laid on top of you. (It'll make sense when you see it.) You can also learn about eye makeup, hair brushes, kilts, and what kind of time Jane had co-starring in R.E.M.'s "Shiny Happy People" video...but wouldn't you rather talk about all the new ADS that helped make this issue the fattest we've seen in months? We sure would! The August 1991 issue has a few pop culture topics to go deep on. Guns 'N Roses gets covered with a What Now concert review AND a review of Danny Sugerman's very pretentious-sounding book about them in the brand-new column Read It (though probably don't; it only earns one pip as the month's book bomb). Paula Abdul gets a bomb review of her new album Spellbound AND name-checked as "Paula Abdrool" in the Keanu Reeves/Alex Winter cover Q&A. Otherwise, we get a lot of material we might like more coverage on, like: Siouxsie And The Banshees' Superstition; Ethan Hawke's Mystery Date hair; Tori Spelling's 18th birthday party; and what Anne L. could not have foreseen would be an incredible revolving door of BulletBoys. You don't need an extra arm à la The Dark Backward to enjoy our commentary on all of the above and more!QUICK LINKS🗒 Full episode notes can be found on this episode's page on our website🖼️ Check out this episode's Visual Aids☎️ Call The Hotline! August 1991 is the thickest issue we've had in quite a while, but those extra pages were not set aside for Teen Life topics -- in fact, there isn't even a fiction story! There are, however, Kim's try-out for American Gladiators, Christina's musings on long-distance boyfriend pros and cons, a What He Said on breast size, a quick trip over a bridge (or through a tunnel) to Brooklyn for On The Road, and more. Even the bummer feature -- about polygamist Alex Joseph, his nine wives, and their many many children -- is mostly a curiosity in its day, and only a bummer in retrospect. Not a bummer? Our latest episode, featuring original music cues that WILL get stuck in your heads. Or maybe not. We're just back from a nearly two-month break. We took two VERY confrontational quizzes ("Are You A News Moron?" and "Are You An Annoyance?"). The hot dogs are sizzling, the fireworks are firing, and July 1991 cover model Rochelle is telling Sassy George Washington never meant shit to her and that HER Independence Day is January 1, the day the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. HELL YEAH! ...There is more to the issue, but it doesn't really compare. One fashion story is in gray; the other is red, white, blue, and American flag print for the holiday Rochelle shan't be celebrating. Sassy also wants to help you lighten up your makeup; turn a t-shirt and a skirt into an ugly and ill-fitting dress; and look ahead to fall -- nooooOOOOO! -- and the plaids and suedes they think you'll be rocking for back to school. Light a firework and listen!

It's summer, and everyone at Sassy is already too hot to work. Christina admits that What Now is kind of a flop -- she's even a month late mentioning Ian Svenonius's birthday! (It's June 1, in case you also want to mark your calendar for the most important event of the year.) One To Watch Jamie Walters, we can now agree, burned bright in his moment, but that his moment did not last long. And then the staff just foregoes Watch It, Listen Up, AND an entertainment feature, instead assembling an insert full of recommendations for what they're all going to be watching, reading, and doing in the summer of 1991. Which of them do we think you should listen to? Listen to US to find out.

The editors use an antique slur (sadly surging back to popularity) to describe a contributor's mentally handicapped sister, but let's not focus on that when the piece -- especially the photos it's built around -- is thoughtful and sensitive. Then, we can move on to why and how to dump a guy; no, taking you to the library isn't one of the reasons, though it does come up. Mike reports from the McDonald's training institute Hamburger University, where the sight of students and instructors actually caring about their careers in customer service alarms his apathetic Gen-X sensibilities. On The Road goes to Cleveland; female staffers' brothers confess the ways they tortured them as kids; a teen mother glosses over a LOT of what Happened To her; and more! You might want fries with this pretty early on, so sort that out before you hit play!

Just in case you haven't already picked out every bathing suit you're going to need for the summer of 1991, Sassy's bringing you one more fashion story on bikinis. Hope you like the way Bronwyn models them because there's very little variation in her poses! The issue also covers vaguely pan-Latin American looks, some kind of fairy tale beauty story, bandana and patchwork-y prints, and how to keep the sun's harmful rays off your precious skin. Sure, a deep tan sounds good now, but someday you'll be in your fifties and VERY aware of sun damage! TRUST US!!! All of this and so very much more awaits you in our latest episode!

Is "rotted" cooler slang than "rotten"? How "monotone" can Beat Happening's lead vocalist actually be? How does Christina rate the relative cuteness of Aleka's Attic, River Phoenix's band? Has the time come for a Toy Soldiers remake? Is it acceptable to call Winona Ryder "Noni"? These are but a few of the questions we answer in the June 1991 Pop Culture episode. We also have a few about Alek Keshishian, but he...probably shouldn't listen. You, however? You definitely should.

Well, there's no way around it: the very first feature is about Black activism, written by a white author (Kim) who gets no help from her editor on how not to sound tone-deaf as she describes being judged by the color of her skin or feeling unwelcome in Black spaces. So let's quickly dispense with it and move on to the rest. Karen finds three couples to talk about their couplehood. Amy Turner -- who checks in from the present day, because she's Pam's friend IRL -- visits Antarctica. Everyone on staff shares their stress relief tips. Plus: foods that trigger headaches, Danielle from Niagara Falls quoting J.D. Salinger at Stuff You Wrote, Ian Ziering on dating girls his parents didn't like, how atheism Happened to this month's Me, and more! Draw a soothing bath and listen!

And it's got tons of historic inspiration if you want to make a BIG change to your look. It's also faking the news a little bit and of COURSE Neill is the offender there. Post up by the pool (indoors if you're not in a tropical zone) to hear about all this and tons more!

Pam is on assignment, but Dave and Tara are bravely carrying on without her. What Now brings us such items as the first news blurb Tara probably ever saw about the Texas mom who came up with a murder-for-hire scheme to advance her 13-year-old daughter's cheerleading career to the 1,000,000th update on reigning Sassiest Boy In America Ian Svenonius (LET IT END). Jane admits she can't be objective about R.E.M. generally and Out Of Time specifically, but at least she's right! The Doors is a five-dot pick we're dubious about; Paris Is Burning deserves not just the five dots it also gets but 10! 10! 10s across the board! Finally, we close on whether John Leguizamo proved to be One To Watch, and what associations we still have for Balthazar Getty beyond being an oil heir. If YOUR heroes have always been cowboys, you MUST listen.

It's May 1991, and Sassy knows exactly what your mom wants most for Mother's Day: you following her around the house quoting statistics about how bad school sucks in this country! When she tells you to give it a rest, you can learn about Kim Frey, a young woman living with HIV, or why you should consider making friends with boys. (It's not because they have amazing answers to the What He Said question about what they'd do if they were invisible, that's for sure.) Also: hay fever, plants, vitamins, deodorant, and more than you ever wanted to know about breast discharge! You're welcome!!!

With Pam out handling a family emergency (everything's okay now!), Dave and Tara bravely handle the Slumber Party on their own. After sharing their results from the "Are You Parent-Tolerant?" quiz, it's on to your calls: one serious one about Pam's massage story, then a lot of silly ones about: other places spooge has unexpectedly appeared; what to try if your nails are weak; that vulnerable feeling when you're wearing a romper and have to pee; and a TRULY horrifying tale of a restaurant trip gone awry. Prepare for an emotional roller coaster -- FOR REAL.

Whose voice is described in this month's Listen Up as "vomity"? It's sure not Sting because Catherine CANNOT be objective about him. It's also not Debbie Gibson protégé Chris Cuevas, though we do have a lot of opinions about the little photo of him we get in What Now. We also discuss whether L.A. Story is still worth seeing and whether it includes a baby in a basket on the side of the freeway; rate the tracks on R.E.M.'s Out Of Time; and wonder whether Christina's piece on why going backstage at a rock show sucks is actually just a huge humblebrag. Give a big David Lee Roth-style scream: it's the April 1991 Pop Culture episode!

The April 1991 issue lulls you into a false sense of complacency by burying its biggest bummer feature in the middle of the island, but then there it is: "They're Shooting Horses." DAMN, KAREN! (Spoiler: this is a problem the U.S. government still hasn't solved -- hope you were sitting down to read this.) Around it, we get Christina's embedded report from a Black debutante ball in Georgia; Margie's mini-profiles of 5 people in cool and important jobs, What He Said about dating an unpopular girl, It Happened To Me from a conflicted breast-reduction surgery patient, and a lot more. Content warning for the fiction story: it's about a girl with the OLDEST MOM IN RECORDED HISTORY -- 60!!!!!

Are you a techno head? In 1991, that meant "Do you know how a computer works?" but also possibly "Can you drive stick?" This quiz is trouble and we've got objections. We've got NO objections to your latest calls about The Grateful Dead, looking like Ben Seaver, The Bridge On The River Kwai, and (of course) cuticles. March on in and listen!

It's March, and that means it's time to start morbidly obsessing on prom, up to and including having a dress rehearsal five days out. All the frippery that fills the special pull-out prom insert feels very un-Sassy, so we hope sponsor Tampax at least paid a truckload of money for both that and a half-reassuring, half-fear mongering insert about periods. (No, your tampon can't get lost inside you...but then again why would they even bring it up unless MAYBE IT COULD?!) Elsewhere, there are tips on nail care, a creative/non-dirty use for an odd sock, photos from Sassy's third birthday party, and more! Put on your pastelliest formalwear and listen!
