Episode Three, and we're looking at one final story by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. "The Murdered Cousin" (1838) is the original 'locked room mystery' and a fascinating way to look at gender power relations in the 19th century. It's got elements of Gothic and also of Detective/Mystery Fiction, this classic tale of terror may well be as relevant today as it was all the way back then.
This time we're looking at "The Familiar" (1851), another classic tale by Sheridan Le Fanu. Captain Barton, proud atheist and man of action, is haunted by footsteps on his nocturnal wanderings in inner-city Dublin. And so begins the various stages of terror that haunt this unlikely victim of the supernatural. Once again, the original tale is analysed with original, contemporary adaptations to follow.
