1950s New York. At the headquarters of NAR National American Radio, their star newscaster is found dead in an abandoned studio. Was he murdered? His tie is still round his dead neck, caught in the mechanism of a new-fangled video tape machine. Should we put the blame on the VTR, or was he the victim of something or someone more sinister? Journalist (and also podcaster) Mason Lane travels through the archive to hear the playback, and, though it seems so long ago, rewinds a cold case, despite how far it has already gone. ......................................... An apartment. An intruder. A bloodstain on a carpet. The sound of a crescendo. But how did this culminate in Annie’s doom? In truth, we can probably blame that on the intruder. But how did he (if it was a he) get through the window? And what made the sound? And why was the criminal hairless? And why did Annie run under a table? How high was this table? And is Annie Ok? Are you ok, Annie? Journalist (and also podcaster) Mason Lane investigates. ......................................... A man is shot six times by a man (another man) on the run. But why? And who are they? And why are the trees whispering? The night is heavy and the air, unlike one of the men, is alive, as journalist (and also podcaster) Mason Lane ventures into it to uncover a mystery, a mystery in which people are dead, and where the trees have begun to sing. It’s the story of a desperate fight, a lost riddle and, possibly crucially, the silhouette of a gun. ......................................... Chicago. A cold grey morning. A kid lies face down in an alleyway with a gun in his hand. To be clear, he’s dead, not just asleep. But what led him to here? To Chicago. To the alleyway. To his death. The first one is easy, he grew up here, in the ghetto. The second two form the mystery which journalist (and also podcaster) Mason Lane sets out to solve, as he delves beneath the underworld, into the under-underworld, of a classic crime-ridden cold case. ..........................................
