Powermom is a community of pregnant people collecting and contributing important pregnancy-related health information through app-based surveys and wearable sensors. She shares her own traumatic experience at the hospital where she practices medicine during her pregnancy, why she believed the overturning of Roe V. Wade is steeped in systemic racism. Her thoughts on home births vs hospital births and advice for Black women to advocate for themselves during their pregnancies. About our guest: Toluwalase "Lase" Ajayi is a palliative care physician and pediatrician. She is dedicated to expanding the benefits of palliative medicine across all ages, as well as improving communication with seriously ill patients. She has a strong interest in studying methods of improving communication between seriously ill patients and hospital teams, as well as investigating how palliative medicine can improve the quality of lives of patients with previously devastating pediatric disease who are now living well into adulthood. This group of patients includes, but is not limited to, those with congenital heart defects, cystic fibrosis, and hemoglobinopathies as well as survivors of pediatric cancers.   She currently serves as the medical director of palliative medicine at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego and is well published in her work with patients with serious illnesses. She completed medical school and residency at the University of Kansas and moved to San Diego for a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. We discuss infertility, IVF, creating supportive environments for Black women  experiencing infertility, infertility resources or support communities for Black women, and what self-care through IVF.  About our guest:  JoAnna Pendergrass, DVM, is a veterinarian and freelance medical writer. She earned her Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology from Hampton University, then earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. JoAnna is the founder and owner of JPen Communications, a medical communications company. Through her writing, she strives to close the gap between what the veterinarian says and what the pet parent understands. Her mission is to equip pet parents with the information they need to make good health decisions for their pets.   JoAnna and her husband are the proud parents of their infant son, Karl. They endured several years of infertility, experiencing two miscarriages and undergoing several rounds of IVF.  JoAnna's infertility journey profoundly affected her. On this episode Adanna Dill and Schnelle Acevedo discuss their experiences as Black women navigating the healthcare system.  They share their biggest concerns when finding a health care provider, "less than" hospital experiences, bias in the healthcare system, and birth control --specifially IUD struggles.  Black women face risks to their health from discrimination—both from health professionals who don't take their concerns seriously and from biological wear and tear caused by chronic stress.
