This week the somewhat under-appreciated early 2000s horror movie, Jeepers Creepers (2001) gives us a real shock. Starring an allegedly hot Justin Long, Jeepers Creepers is a simple, classic horror movie that features an old, winged demon with bad hair who has some sick moves (I mean, he backflips off a car). So, join us as we talk about all things scary, like Christianity and vanity plates! Talking points: Persuasion (2022), In Bruges (2008), Letterboxd Corner, unravelling who exactly The Creeper is, Christianity, how guys talk, The Creeper’s butt, and how the ending of this movie could have been better.    Follow us on Instagram and TikTok @filmgods.podcast and on Twitter @filmgodspod for updates/bonus content.   Film Gods is a production by Olivia Barclay and Olexa Brisson. Warning: Olexa’s audio is bad for half of this episode *womp womp* This week we review a movie we collectively have seen probably 12 times; it is the 2009 romantic comedy, He’s Just Not That Into You. We take on this late 2000s movie to see if it is really as “sexist” and “superficial” as the Rotten Tomatoes critics and Letterboxd users claim. And honestly, we’ve seen worse. He’s Just Not That Into You is just fine, so leave her alone! Talking points: Toronto slang, movie budgets, reading reviews from practically every movie review platform, movie budgets, stereotyping in films, engagement rings, a rom-com for adult men, “high school” students in film and television, the diversity of your 20s, and Jennifer Anniston’s quest to bring back rom-coms. Gaymy Schumer: Senior Year

2022-06-1701:12:29

This week we regret to inform you that Netflix’s Senior Year was an extremely enjoyable film! Sorry guys, but this movie is nostalgic, funny, and has an incredible soundtrack. If this came out when we were, like, 13, it would have been perfect to watch at a sleepover with your besties in your mom’s basement. Release your inhibitions, feel the rain on your skin, and watch Senior Year with us! Talking points: Drew Barrymore, the insane plot of this movie, Rebel Wilson, Amy Schumer, Letterboxd Corner, Top Gun 2, the Netflix High School Cinematic Universe, the nostalgic charm of 90s and 2000s movies, our comfort TV shows, toe shots, and the soundtrack of this movie.   Follow us on Instagram and TikTok @filmgods.podcast and on Twitter @filmgodspod for updates/bonus content.   Film Gods is a production by Olivia Barclay and Olexa Brisson. Surprise! We’re back! We are super excited to get back into poorly judging films with you guys. On our first week back we tackle the cultural touchstone 90’s film, Men in Black starring the one and only Will Smith. The New York City aliens in this movie gave us some good laughs and we had a lot of fun talking about this comedy, action, and sci-fi medley of a film. Hope you enjoy it! Talking Points: figuring out if and how Tommy Lee Jones is hot, Rotten Tomatoes ratings, movie scores, opening credits, Letterboxd Corner, high school parties, the aliens, Jim Carey, the French language, David Lynch films, and Stephen Spielberg. This week we watched Valley Girl (1983), which is maybe the most 80s movie of all time! It stars a young Nicolas Cage (who we love) who plays a “punk” from Hollywood who falls for a preppy girl from the Valley. This film has some very questionable moments and a killer soundtrack, so tune in and find out if Valley Girl goes to heaven or hell! Talking points: Iggy Azalea, dating Some Guy, Letterboxd Corner, 80s vernacular, our fave 80s movies, our fave movies in general, Nicolas Cage’s chest hair, the myth of pee in Arizona iced tea, and endocannibalism. This is our first official episode on our embarkment of finding a movie to send to Hell. Turns out, it wasn’t too hard. You just have to pick a movie Paris Hilton stars in. Listen, we love Paris, but girl, this movie is Bad. Most of what makes this movie bad is its pedophile vibes. A lot of weird stuff in this one, guys. Listen up while we dissect this strange romantic comedy! Talking points: the movie Hypothermia (2010), the “Notties” appearance, the name Cristabel, When Harry Met Sally (1989), the creepiness of this movie, Barbie and Ken, pretty privilege, recommending movies to men, yoga in the 2000s, the new girls in school, Avatar, and Grey’s Anatomy. This is a wild one, guys! Buckle up! Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) took us on a crazy, unexpected ride. We misjudged this movie, I must say. We thought it was going to go to Hell and honestly, we really wanted it to. But Jason Segel got us on this one and maybe, just MAYBE, Forgetting Sarah Marshall made us forget how much we hate Judd Apatow.  Talking points: directing movies, the careers we considered, Judd Apatow, Russell Brand, Letterboxd Corner, The Dracula Puppet Musical, throuples, fun facts about the making of the movie, the unrated cut of the film, and MGK and Megan Fox.  Follow us on Instagram and TikTok @filmgods.podcast and on Twitter @filmgodspod for updates/bonus content.   Film Gods is a production by Olivia Barclay and Olexa Brisson. We are back, baby! In our first episode of the new year, we review Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut film, The Lost Daughter (2021). At this point, our expectations for “Netflix Originals” are very, very low, but this film exceeded those expectations! It was intense. It was emotional. Did this film make us question our entire future? Yes. Did we still like it? Absolutely. Enjoy listening as we yo-yo between deep conversations about motherhood and arbitrarily categorizing our new, made-up genre of film called “beach movie”.  Talking points: watching movies without each other, Letterboxd Corner, what counts as a “beach movie”, motherhood, depression, pondering our futures, the parallels between Nina and Leda, an Owen Wilson impression, and theorizing why Olivia Colman’s character did that.  Follow us on Instagram and TikTok @filmgods.podcast and on Twitter @filmgodspod for updates/bonus content.   Film Gods is a production by Olivia Barclay and Olexa Brisson. Die, Actually: Die Hard

Die, Actually: Die Hard

2021-12-2101:31:18

If you don’t think Die Hard (1988) is a Christmas movie, we are here to convince you otherwise! This action/thriller/Christmas movie had us saying very 10-year-old boy stuff like “That was awesome!” every two minutes. Filled with timeless one-liners and memorable scenes, Die Hard is a guaranteed good time. This week we watch perhaps the most re-watchable Christmas movie, The Holiday (2006). It’s been 15 years since we were blessed with this incredible film and it still holds up. Maybe it’s not considered a critically acclaimed film, but that doesn’t matter; it’s critically acclaimed in our hearts. It perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Christmas – cozy, romantic, and joyful. So grab a hot cup of hot chocolate and tune in to our review of The Holiday! Talking points: telling kids Santa is real, Cameron Diaz’s acting, what makes Graham the perfect man, Letterboxd Corner, the kids in this movie, the cameos in this movie, THAT kiss scene, the ‘I’m-not-like-other-girls’ trope, Hans Zimmer’s discography, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002), and the soundtrack to our own movie.  Follow us on Instagram and TikTok @filmgods.podcast and on Twitter @filmgodspod for updates/bonus content.   Film Gods is a production by Olivia Barclay and Olexa Brisson. So it begins! Christmas season! Olivia is starting our Christmas series off with a family favourite, Christmas with the Kranks (1994). Let’s talk about how a bunch of neighbours bullied a family into celebrating Christmas. Just press play! Talking points: Our favourite Christmas songs, our opinion on the song “Baby It’s Cold Outside”, lying, how much Tim Allen sucks in this movie and in real life, The Polar Express (2004), liquor store Santa, and the ending of every Christmas movie ever. As you all should know by now, we rate movies based on how much fun we had watching them. And let me tell you, we had a lot of fun watching House of Gucci. Were the accents supposed to be this comedic? Probably not. Were we supposed to laugh this hard throughout the movie? Maybe? Either way – we found it an enjoyable experience. It was everything we love – fashion, murderous women, and extravagance. Also, the cast is stacked! Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Adam Diver, LADY GAGA. I don’t care if this movie is technically good or bad. We had a hell of a time.  Talking points: how to sneak someone into a movie theatre, approval from authority, Letterboxd Corner, Old (2021), Jared Leto and Al Pacino’s characters, Adam Driver’s sexiness, divorce, movie scores, and the Italian life and language. In the last instalment of the Halloween series we watch the super goth, super camp film. The Craft (1996) in our Halloween costumes. A weird amount of singing and a pretty normal amount of accents happen in this episode so prep yourself for that and then join us as we review this 90’s teen witch movie in our Lydia and Lady Bird costumes. Talking points: shoplifting, Lady Bird (2017), the name Skeet Ulrich, how this movie could be gayer, a bad bad bad John Lennon impression, a made-up game show where renowned film directors have to make a good but also shitty rom-com, how female villains are scarier than male villains, picnics, and what we would do if we had powers. You can’t review scary movies without reviewing the movie that started the slasher genre! It’s the original Halloween (1978), baby! First of all, we love how John Carpenter just plugs his own movie in this film. Hustler. Also, his thriftiness and frugalness is something that we, as university students, can very much appreciate. We love this film and above all, we love the scream queen herself, Jamie-Lee Curtis.  Talking points: Gilmore Girls, podcast voices, last names, Halloween (1978) facts, most popular baby names in 1978, Letterboxd Corner, Olivia’s original film Zombie Horse, how scary young men and 16 year olds can be, how scary and silly Micheal Myers is, how stupid the local cop is, and the speed at which slasher villains recover. Welcome to the third instalment of our Halloween series! This week we review A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), a total horror classic. This movie is the perfect combination of cheesy 80s horror and genuinely scary moments. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore! Plus, the outfits in this film (especially Johnny Depp’s characters’) are iconic. Enjoy!
