Our March 2021 conversation with Nancy Barile about her book “I'm Not Holding Your Coat: My Bruises-And-All Memoir of Punk Rock Rebellion” on Bazillion Points Books. (RIP Al Barile)
Linda Smith is the great mystery of lofi/home recording lore. Without Linda Smith, there’s no Elliot Smith, Sebadoh, Guided by Voices, Olivia Tremor Control, etc. We were honored to have her on the Artifact podcast in May 2021. Check out her career retrospective on Captured Tracks if you’re inclined to go down the lofi rabbit hole.
From April 2021
Matt and I interviewed Luke in March 2021 just as the Dirty Nil’s third album, Fuck Art was being released. Since then, the band has released another LP, Free Rein to Passions (2023) and they just released a single “I Hate the Internet” in January. They are currently touring the US.
Conversation with Brendan Canty about the salad days of DC hardcore, the formation of Rites of Spring and Fugazi and beyond...
One of our favorite guests - Andrew Rieger of Elf Power. We had a great discussion about the old days in Athens, GA, the inception of Elephant 6 Records, touring with GBV and REM and many other topics. Enjoy!
A discussion with legendary musician (Let’s Active) and producer (R.E.M., Pavement, and many more) - Mitch Easter!
Bonus episode from Sept. 2021 - Discussion about the Rolling Stones and the recent passing of Charlie Watts (among other stuff)
To celebrate the beginning of October, here is my wide-ranging convo with Eerie Von of Danzig and Samhain!
Discussion with authors Tom Beaujour & Rich Bienstock about their book on the 80s hair metal scene "Nothin' But A Good Time" (Now a docuseries on Paramount+)
Jim Wilson is a rocker to the core and just so happens to be from Delaware! His credentials include his own hard rockin’ band, Mother Superior, as well as gigs with Henry Rollins (2.13.61), Emmylou Harris, Daniel Lanois, Sparks, and Motor Sister with Scott Ian of Anthrax. More recently, he has been playing with Marc Ford (formerly of Black Crowes).
We got to hang with RED FANG drummer John Sherman on the eve of their album release for “Arrows” in the summer of 2021. Cool conversation and a great guy!
Great chat with author Jude Warne about the band America. Look for her new book Lowdown: the Music of Boz Scaggs to be published by Chicago Review in early 2025. https://judewarne.com/
Conversation with the awesome Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Cobra Verde, Nada Surf)
Just for fun on a Friday! - Dan and Matt open up Dan's old cassette case that has been basically untouched for over 20 years. Please ignore references to Patreon (that didn't stick!) and our slightly slurred speech : )
With all of the excitement about R.E.M. being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame last week. I thought it was a good time to re-post our Season 2 Premier interview with Mike Mills. Enjoy!
Reposting Artifact episode #3 - a great interview with former SPIN editor and author Doug Brod discussing his book They Just Seem a Little Weird: How KISS, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, and Starz Remade Rock and Roll. As Matt and I are big fans of those bands, we had a lot to talk about! Be on the lookout for Doug's latest book Born with a Tail: The Devilish Life and Wicked Times of Anton Szandor LaVey, Founder of the Church of Satan available for preorder today at your favorite bookseller.
Conversation about the classic 1979 cult hit Over the Edge with screenwriter (and author) Charlie Haas and musician Jeffrey Couch.
Your spirit guides, Dan and Matt, set sail on the maiden voyage of the Artifact podcast with the trustiest of captains, Bob Nastanovich, of Pavement The Rock Band, Silver Jews, and his revived label, Brokers Tip Records. Expect brilliant stories about Lollapalooza ‘95, Courtney Love, working with producers Mitch Easter of Let's Active, and Nigel Goodrich (Radiohead, Beck), as well as the cruel winters in Des Moines, Iowa.
