Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon have the distinction of being the first gay couple to be married in the state of California. But their journey to the altar is far from an easy one. That's because, after that fateful day in 1949 when girl meets girl, the two will spend much of their 55-year love affair fighting for basic human rights beginning with the formation of the first lesbian rights group in the United States. Their love story is full of passion, commitment, and companionship to be sure. But it is also shroud with decades of gender discrimination; societal, cultural, and familial prejudice, and the pain that comes from living in constant fear of arrest or institutionalization, all for being the one thing everyone should have had the right to be… ourselves!   ►Follow us on Facebook here This episode is brought to you by amiethedatingcoach.com Grab Amie's free Ebook, 5 Dating Traps to Avoid ►https://www.amiethedatingcoach.com/getlovenow  Title Song "Brave" by Sad Puppy Follow Sad Puppy on Twitter Follow Sad Puppy on Instagram
Cesar Chavez is famous the world over for being a relentless labor leader and civil rights activist who spent a lifetime fighting for the rights of farmworkers and their families. For decades, he worked to get this disenfranchised group higher wages, safer working conditions, and a better life in general. But he doesn’t undertake this monumental crusade alone, not by a long shot.   His wife Helen may be lesser-known but the love, the support, and the devotion she has for her husband and his cause is an integral part of the positive change that occurs in the lives of thousands.   Together, the couple overcomes unjust arrests, death threats, raising eight children in extreme poverty, and the lifetime of pain that comes with knowing their fight for human rights and social justice may never end. Still, the Cesar and Helen Chavez love story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when two selfless individuals come together for the love of each other and the cause they are willing to die for.
On February 10, 1863, a wedding occurs in Manhattan’s Grace Church that takes New York City and the rest of the world by storm. The “fairy wedding” as it will be known, has a guest list that consists of the crème de le crème of high society and is so popular with the masses that it knocks coverage of the American Civil War (which is at its height) off the cover of the New York Times for three straight days. The groom, Charles Stratton, and his bride, Lavinia Warren are not politicians, or famous sports figures, or famous industrialists of the day, they are what was commonly known at the time as “Freaks.” Freaks who perform under the tutelage of one Phineas Taylor (aka P.T.) Barnum of Barnum & Baily Circus fame. Charles, who goes by the stage name General Tom Thumb, and Lavinia stand just 3’4” and 2’8” respectively thus are considered dwarfs or little people.  Despite their diminutive size, they are arguably the most famous couple in the world in the mid-late 19th century. Together they perform in over 20,000 shows, be seen by over 50 million people on five continents, and live out a decades-long love story that has to be heard to be believed.
