Cassie Abel had a different road than most to the ski industry. While her peers were spending as much time as possible on snow, Cassie was winning 4 State Championships in HS before her Hall of Fame collegiate career. After a stint of a 9-5 lifestyle, Cassie got sucked into the ski industry, first with resort marketing, and then on the brand side with Smith.  But when her dream job left town, Cassie stayed back in Sun Valley, started a PR agency,  eventually jumped into entrepreneurship with her Ski and Mountain Bike start up, Wild Rye. Then his sport was iced out of X Games, went underground and Jaren's pro career went from contest winnings to skating shows. But, that's not what makes this one interesting. Jaren grew up poor, went on tour at 14, joined the circus, and made it in skating. 30 years later, he's still being paid to skate, but it's a different monster. Winter Sports Market, aka WSM, is the only show that resembles what SIA once was.  It has all the brands, all the new products, all the in-house staff, all the reps, and all the dealers.   As far as industry building and culture building events, outside of movie premiers, this is all skiing has.  I went down to SLC to cover the event and detail my trade show experience and along the way I chat with folks like Mike Hattrup, Ted Ligety, Cassie Able, Griffin Post, Jonny Moseley, Alex O'Brien and some other incredible industry legends and insiders. Kaya Turski grew up in Montreal and was the little rollerblader who was blowing everyone's collective minds. While Kaya went ASA Pro at 14, she was known for being a gnarly street skater. One of the best women to ever do it. But the bottom dropped out of skating, Kaya decided to give skiing a try and within a year, she was standing on her first X-Games podium in a sport that wasn't her original calling. From there, Kaya went on to dominate competition skiing.  Think 8 X Games Golds, 5 AFP Titles and so many more victories to boot. But her story is not all sunshine, the years of abuse has taken its toll on her body and mind and Kaya and I talk about all the glory but we also talk about the daily pain that is her reality. Nick Goepper has 2 Olympic Silver and 1 Olympic Bronze in his closet and this year, in a totally new discipline, Nick is aiming to take his first gold medal home at the Milan Cortina Olympic Games. What's crazy is that 3 years ago, when Nick came out of retirement and told the world he was gunning for halfpipe gold, a lot of us thought it was a publicity stunt. But Nick knew exactly what he was doing and now, he's one of the front runners for gold.  Nick's whole life has been an underdog story and time and again and time and again and time and again and now a 4th time and again, Nick is off to compete on the biggest stage in the world.  It's part 3 with a guy who used to be my least favorite comp skier, who then became my favorite skier. Sage Cattabriga-Alosa is a legend in the world of snow. This former dish dog at the Alta Peruvian, doubled Chad's Gap and kick-started his 20+ year pro ski career.  We've done that podcast. Angel Collinson kicks off season 10 of the podcast and it's a good one. When Angel was last on the show, she was coming off a "Line of the Year" season and was on the top of the ski world. What I, and a lot of people didn't realize, was that Angel wasn't as passionate about skiing as the world thought she was. Eventually burnout got the best of her and Angel shocked the ski world when she retired in her prime and sailed off into the sunset. We talk about it all and her brother, another incredible athlete and human, John Collinson, asks the Inappropriate Questions.  Angel Collinson Show Notes: 4:00: Impressions, where we left off last, blown knee, skiing was her track to everything, burnout, college, big mountain comps, fear, 21:00: Ski Idaho: With 19 mountains, a ton of snow and no lift lines, why wouldn't you Visit Idaho   Best Day Brewing:  All of the flavor of your favorite IPA or Kolsch, without the alcohol, the calories or sugar. 24:00: Pressure, loss, energy healing, grief, AK with Seth, Sage, and Dana, production of skiing, having an epiphany about skiing, and money 41:30: Elan Skis:  Over 75 years of innovation that makes you better.   Outdoor Research: The best outerwear on the planet is designed and developed in the brutal elements of the Pacific Northwest 43:00: The business of being pro, retiring, buying a sailboat, living in the water, pirates, and an epiphany at Burning Man 68:00: Inappropriate Questions with John Collinson
Sid Pattison is a heli ski guide,  an Everest veteran, and an all around badass,  but what makes Sid different is who he is. Sid has the rare combination of a magnetic personality that lights up any situation, along with the ability to connect with every person he comes across, from the janitor to the CEO. These unique human skills, combined with his beast-like ability in the field, has created a fast lane in life that's allowed Sid to leapfrog past more accomplished peers. He's skipped some traditional steps on his way to things like guiding Everest, to his upcoming buy into North Cascade Heli Ski, but he doesn't cut corners.  While nothing that Sid does is traditional, it's always memorable and it eventually works out. This is a fun one Sid Pattison Show Notes: 4:00: Sid does things different, wishing he was Jewish, and growing up with privilege 19:00: Ski Idaho: With 19 mountains, a ton of snow and no lift lines, why wouldn't you Visit Idaho Stanley:  The brand that invented the category! Seattle and Jackson Hole are the focus of this different Christmas episode.  In Seattle, I checked out "The Common Line" snowboard event (which was incredible!!) and I talked to a few legends who stand sideways. After that, I caught up with skier and recent avalanche survivor, Adam U, before he played a punk rock show with his band Krontonamo. A couple days later, I traveled to Jackson Hole with the Outside Life crew to emcee an event and while I was there, I caught up with some more forward-facing legends.  It's a different episode that I think you'll like. Chris Davenport hasn't been on the podcast in a few years and since then, a lot in his world has changed and lot has stayed the same. Dav still goes on more incredible adventures than almost anyone in the ski industry but these days he's not looking for firsts or anything like that, he's more focused on chasing powder while leading groups that froth over time with Dav in the mountains. He really has built something special with his career, but it hasn't all been easy. Then, at the events, he's been the guy coordinating media for athletes like Lindsay Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin, Picabo Street, and Bode Miller.  On the podcast we talk about some of Tom's 11 Olympics, the athletes, the situations, the controversies, and more. Xander Guldman is a relative newcomer on the scene and could be called "one of the best kept secrets in skiing." I mean, he's been competing in big mountain environments since he was 10 years old, he's stood on many podiums, made it to the Freeride World Tour, won awards, and has/is filming with the biggest outfits in the ski game.  His bouncy style and unique trick/grab vocabulary separate him from the rest and on the podcast, we talk about his live-scored personal project "Form", graduating from UC Davis Pre-Med, the FWT, skiing and what's next. Matt Reardon was born and raised in Louisiana, not the place you'd expect a longtime pro skier to grow up. But Matt isn't just a skier; he's a talented musician, a onetime frontman, who toured the world to shred his guitar and fresh powder.  The crazy thing is, Matt can trace his life and times today back to two events that happened prior to high school: seeing Van Halen live and then seeing "Hot Dog, The Movie". Those two things changed Matt's life. On part 1 of his podcast we talk about those events, getting into skiing, Tahoe, Europe, and so much more.
