Barbie and The Bear

2023-08-3001:04:00

Why hello sweet podsters. This week, Olivia discusses her itchy hands (and warm heart) as in true, sapphic form, she has acquired a cat! We go deep on Barbie just in time for the end of the #discourse which let's face it, is very us! We discuss the character arc of Ken v Barbie and how it's impossible to please everyone when you create a movie to please everyone (spoiler alert, we still liked it very much) and the importance of platforming women's silliness- we are silly, ok?! We also go deep on The Bear Season 2 and our crushes on every single character- (Matty Matheson anyone?!) as well as *that* episode, 'Fishes.' TOTW: FIFTY FIFTY - Barbie Dreams (feat. Kaliii) [From Barbie The Album] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfZjylInCwg The Replacements - Can’t Hardly Wait https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvGjAYH-Nq4

Look before you ask, yes, we have had a glass of wine. Join us for this BUMPER episode where we let you know all about what we've been up to! From Barbie excitement (yes this episode was recorded before the big Barb release), some top pick books we've read recently and some gorgeous trips we've galavanted on. Then we go IN on 'A Little Life', and whether or not we agree with the stage adaptation and maybe, actually, it's existence altogether. And don't worry we also then have a LOT to say about the return of 'And Just Like That'...anyone else worried about Miranda's queer awakening? Also, trust me, TRUST me you are going to want to listen right to the end to hear the outro where we truly lost our minds. Look. We know it's long. Listen in two parts. Listen in four. Listen all in one go. Don't listen at all. Who cares? Hello hello jolly podcast sailors, 'tis us, your favourite gals about town with another monthly serving of QUEER LONGING. This month, we recap our jet set lifestyle (Lucy went to Rome and ate delicious food, Olivia went to Valencia and ate mediocre food) as well as the myriad benefits of an air fryer (hello thirties, is that you?). We talk about our upcoming trip to see A Little Life on the West End, and discuss how our relationship to art can change with time and context. We cover Eurovision and how we got the best Chinese takeaway of our lives that one time (never to be repeated) and importantly, what the future holds for the Gaylor of our dreams post (alleged) Joe Alwyn break up. We talk all our favourite telly bits from Succession to The Power as well as scary childhood memories and the importance of always splitting the G. You'd truly be mad to miss it. Oh hi angels! That's right, we're back but don't make a big deal out of it. Nooooo, stop it... put those balloons away. We're shy. In this the first episode of our brand new series we take a look back at what we've been up to. Think: Chromatica Ball, deluxe camping and the best Sporty Spice news ever. Plus we look forward to consumable fan favourites 'Succession' and 'And Just Like That', and when we say 'fan favourites' we of course mean our favourites. We're absolutely brimming with living to be back and gooey with you all. So climb on board and feel the longing! Tracks of the Week: Plastic Bertrand, Ca Plane Pour Moi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln31raI2ezY&ab_channel=TopPop Drug Church, Myopic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDJB6gmdEP8&ab_channel=PureNoiseRecords
We're back for a new season and starting off with another stunning author special. In this episode we were joined by the true human delight that is Henry Fry to discuss his debut novel, 'First Time For Everything', a heart-warming novel which follows protagonist Danny along the pitfalls of finding yourself explored through humour and the importance of queer family. We talked to Henry about his new book along with a lot of chat about festivals, corporate lip service and choosing bottoms or tops for our burger buns...naturally! Henry's book, 'First Time For Everything' is available now- go go go!
And we're back with another banging author! This time we're joined by Calla Henkel to discuss her debut novel 'Other People's Clothes', a darkly comic novel set in the 00's which deals with death, sexuality and toxic friendships. We talked to Calla about her inspo behind the novel and the specific reasons for setting this story against a landscape before the onset of mass social media in our lives- everyone's remembers when they removed their battery from their phone right?! Calla dives in the distinct characterisation of the two friend's in the book and on wanting to give them what they want, even if that outcome may seem perverse. Plus, we dissect the changing obsession people have with true crime and 'dead girl' narratives. Hello Hunnis! It's been a while but today we're taking a break from our author special guest series and this episode... it's just family!  Dive on in as we catch up on life post literati fame, the latest telly (stand by for our Simon and Mayo-esque takes on Hacks, The Dropout, Severance, Lost (lol), Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Staircase (the Colin and Toni one) and Big Mother).  Plus, Olivia makes her case for possibly the most polarising segment on Queer Longing so far- 'I Don't Agree With It: The Redemption.' If you ever thought we didn't bring you a veritable smorgasbord of tension and intrigue, think again huns.  We also talk the return of the best play of the year, 'Bloody Elle' back for a limited time in June, get your tickets here: https://www.royalexchange.co.uk/whats-on-and-tickets/bloody-elle-a-gig-musical-2022 Tracks of the Week:  The Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGD9i718kBU Arcade Fire - The Lightning I, II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJiALpiqpk8 Love you xoxo
Another week, another stunning author! This week we welcome writer, comedian and fellow podcaster, Rosie Wilby to the pod to talk all things breakups! Rosie's new book 'The Breakup Monologues', which runs alongside her brilliant podcast of the same name, charts the many nuances of the end of relationships, the potential of actually staying in one and the unexpectedly joyous point of starting anew and evolving.  We talked how to stay friends with an ex, the satisfaction of friendship love and the gorgeously unique value of queer relationships.  Plus, other very important things like the breakup haircut and why we don't agree with calzones.  Dive on in bbz, this one's not to be missed! Rosie's book 'The Breakup Monologues' is available now in all good bookshops. For more info, check it out here: https://linktr.ee/breakupmonologues
This week we were absolutely thrilled to welcome our first return guest, author and all around hun, Laura Kay! Laura joins us to talk about her new novel 'Tell Me Everything' which details the life and loves of therapist Natasha who goes on a journey of self-acceptance with many fun japes along the way. We talked to Laura about the theme of control, learning how to schedule your time as a full time writer and, of course, crisps. Plus, probably our best ever triple I Don't Agree With It. Don't miss this one! Tune in huns, and read the book! 'Tell Me Everything' is out 26th May and available in all good bookshops. We know we've been away for far too long but don't worry we get straight back on our bullshit aka talking about what we've been crying about, love to cry about and will continue to cry about. We give you a big old lowdown of what we've been up to since you last heard from us. Top notes are that Olivia forgot how old she is and Lucy is apparently Benjamin Buttoning. Never fear we also hit all the important queer topics too from JoJo Siwa's new haircut, a new era for the Lionesses, and the renewal of our problematic fave, 'And Just Like That', complete with stunning predictions for S2. Plus, we let you know the importance of both showin' and 'sposin yourself in this the year of our lord 2022. Forget hibernating- get out there and soak up your life! We're feeling v analytical this week and do a deep dive of The Matrix Resurrections: what we really liked about it (see: Simulatte) and what we weren't so keen on (more drama, more overt queerness pls). For the review Lucy mentions see here: http://www.reverseshot.org/reviews/entry/2890/matrix_res We recap the ongoing queer elements of And Just Like That aka losing our minds at Miranda's 'daydreaming' sequence and not agreeing with the writers losing the balance of allowing a queer awakening without demonising cherished characters. Plus, we talk mentioning the pandemic in media and why it gives us the ick and we critique the critics- which we absolutely are within our rights to do.
