We are back!  Welcome to the first episode of season 4. This season is hosted by Sophia (BDS 4) and Chyanne (BDS 2) - dental students from the University of Manchester.  In this episode, we are very lucky to be speaking with our very own MPDSS committee members and dental students from the University of Manchester - Rachel (BDS 5), Aryan (BDS 5) and Ishmyne (BDS 4). Over the summer they visited Kenya to implement DiPS (Dentistry in Primary Schools) in the local area.  In this episode we cover the following: What is DiPS? She is also the Professional and Clinical Lead for the Nutrition and Dietetic service, at an NHS trust in the South West. Raph is the founder of “Latch to Ladle” – a bespoke paediatric nutrition company for infants, toddlers and children. Hello everyone, and welcome back to the BITEsize Paediatric podcast! This season is hosted by Yasmin (BDS3) and Chloe (BDS2) - dental students from the University of Manchester. This episode is 1/2 of our cleft lip/palate series. Today we are joined by Dr Jeanette Mooney at the Regional Cleft Network (based at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital). Dr Mooney qualified as a dental therapist in 1980. She has gained many post qualifications including oral health promotion, conscious sedation and a PhD examining provision oral health programmes for parents of children born with a cleft. In this episode, we cover a range of questions: - What is cleft lip/palate? - When does treatment start for cleft patients? - How and when do these patients access a general dentist? - What errors can GDPs make? - What is the role of the GDP in cleft patient management? - Is oral hygiene more challenging for these patients? Our first episode features Dr. Fionnuala Loy - a paediatric dentistry registrar. She completed DCT1 in paediatric dentistry, oral surgery and orthodontics at Manchester Dental Hospital as well as DCT 2 in restorative dentistry at Manchester followed by Maxfax at Royal Preston Hospital. She then worked as a specialty dentist in Leeds Dental Institute before starting her post as a registrar in paediatric dentistry at Birmingham Dental hospital. We cover the following topics: - What is DCT and DFT? - What are DCT rotations like? - How are these different rotations relevant to paediatric dentistry? - Why is there a stark lack of paediatric specialists? - How to deal with the pressure of choosing a specialty. Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation is more than just a mouthful to say - it is a dental condition that affects around 1 in 5 people in the UK! This condition can significantly affect a child's quality of life, however, not many members of the public (and dentists) know about it. We were lucky enough to interview Dr Judi Humphreys, a Paediatric Specialist based at the University of Liverpool, about this condition. She has dedicated her postdoctorate research to the management of MIH, and is looking to improve clinical guidelines.
