Happy New Year!
This week, we explore the diverse pre- and early- Christian traditions that have lent themselves to our modern understanding and celebration of the Christmas Holiday. We talk about how those traditions have combined to create the modern holiday that is celebrated by billions of all faiths today, and how much 'Christ' there really is in Christmas to begin with.

This week we took some time to catch up on current events which have transpired since our last unscripted recording, including the recent NYC Mayoral Election which saw Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani crush Andrew 'The Sex Pest' Cuomo in all but one borough. I think we all know which one was the holdout.
Cam and Evan take time to discuss their particular views on the role of electoral politics in a socialist project and whether it cans till be useful to take part knowing the limitations inherent.

This week we conclude the two episode miniseries we began last week with Dick and Don of Fourth Reich Archaeology. We continue our discussion of Guy Debord’s The Society of the Spectacle and try to make sense of the explosion of violence and fake disclosures that have dominated the first year of the second Trump administration.

The LU Boys are joined this week by Dick and Don of the Fourth Reich Archaeology podcast for part one of a two part series on Guy Debord’s 1967 work The Society of the Spectacle and his 1988 followup Comments on the Society of the Spectacle. We use these works as a lens to decrypt the first year of the Trump 2 administration and the explosion of violence and confusion that has followed in its wake.

This week we return to Iberia in the late 11th century to see how our old pal Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar is handling his second brush with exile from the royal court of Alfonso VI. He learned a lot during his first brush with freelance mercenary work, and this time we'll see him put those skills to work as he attempts to realize his loftier ambitions.

This week we settle in to talk movies; specifically, the 1961 historical epic 'El Cid'. Directed by Anthony Mann, and produced by Franco-collaborator Samuel Bronston, this hard-to-find technicolor classic is a prime example of political propaganda on the big screen. Shot largely on-scene in Spain, with 60's heavy-hitters Charlton Heston and Sofia Loren leading a cast that included hundreds of actual Francoist soldiers on loan as extras, there was plenty to admire and critique in equal measure.

This week we continue our look at the life and times of famed Reconquista-era knight and mercenary Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, known to posterity by the epithet El Cid. This week we will discuss the Christian response to the collapse of the Caliphate, the rise of the Almoravids, and begin to explore more deeply El Cid’s life and deeds, insofar as we know of them, and will attempt to sift apart truth from legend.

This week, we travel back to the Iberian Peninsula in the 11th Century CE and begin our discussion about one of the most formative events in the Western European historical tradition: The Reconquista. Traditionally, at least to Western historians, this has been a tale of the centuries long triumph of Christianity, Civilization, and Enlightened European Values over the despotic domination of the conquering Muslim hordes. This week we will introduce perhaps the most famous culture hero to emerge from this tumultuous era, El Cid, and explore the world into which he was born.
