Jake and Rick discuss a few news items from the baseball week and then dive into breakdowns of noteworthy season debuts for AAA pitchers. Jake also goes in-depth on his process for evaluating the statcast data on Baseball Savant to analyze AAA pitching performances.
Jake and Rick spend the first third of the pod discussing the prospects who broke camp on MLB rosters. They break down two rapidly rising relievers who could be in the mix for save chances by the end of the season, along with a handful of impact hitters fighting for playing time. For the rest of the pod, they discuss the college players who have surpassed and fallen short of expectations this season. Rick's pre-season 1.1 draft pick has struggled out of the gate, and a handful of players have solidified themselves in the top half of the first round of the July Amateur Draft. But one player has risen to the top of Rick's upcoming draft prospect rankings.
Jake and Rick discuss their thoughts on this year's Spring Breakout games that showcased each team's best prospects. They give their thoughts on the exhibition and then go into player performances and breakdowns. Rick comes in clutch by breaking down a handful of notable prospects that are owned in less than 10% of leagues on Fantrax.
Jake and Rick are joined by Chris Welsh to break down their favorite sleeper prospects. Before Chris joins the show, Jake and Rick discuss some notable developments that we've seen so far in Spring Training. Chris Welsh is a host and analyst for Fantasy Pros and Betting Pros. He's also the co-owner of the In This League podcast and creator of The Prospect One podcast.
Jake and Rick are joined this week by Astros pitching prospect Trey Dombroski to discuss his development through college and into professional baseball. The group breaks down how Trey identified and played to his strengths as a pitcher, how the pitches in his arsenal work off of each other to attack hitters, and how the Astros player development philosophies have shown him new pitches, pitch shapes, and approaches. Trey Dombroski was chosen in the 4th round (133 overall) in the 2022 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. He is one of 10 MLB draft picks all-time from Monmouth University and has a chance to be the 4th player to make the big leagues from the school. He won Pitcher of the Year while playing in the Cape Cod League in 2021 and was named Astros Pitcher of the Year in 2023 by MLB Pipeline. Dombroski led all of High-A pitchers in 2023 with 148 strikeouts in 119 innings pitched, which also set the single-season strikeout record for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers.
