We’re back with the last show of summer at the Dublab studio. JB opens the show with some soulful hip-hop joints, followed by Gabe Real playing new music with his signature eclectic style. Mike Styles hosts and finishes the show with a warm but chill end-of-summer mix, ushering us into the next season.
We welcome back community builder Bess Kepp and JB of A Mic and Dim Lights, a 20+ year open mic event that started in Pomona, California. They discuss their history and recent achievements. In true Dim Lights form, we also get a couple of poems from Bess and DJ set from JB. Re:Fresh crew is in the house with additional DJ sets by Gabe Real and Subira. Nanna.B is a Danish-born and until very recently, an LA-based singer, songwriter, and producer with an eclectic sound focused on R&B, Soul, and Electronic music. She has worked with and captivated the likes of Anderson .Paak, Mndsgn, Shafiq Husayn, Soulection, Boiler Room, and our pal Ken Barrientos who first introduced us to her music several years ago. She’s been featured on Beats1, The Joe Budden Podcast, Vice, and High Snobiety and has played festival stages from SXSW to Camp Flog Gnaw. Her new album, Don’t Come if You Can’t Bring No Flowers, is streaming everywhere.Cell Uno intros the show with his signature layered mix style of distorted soul electronica, and Subira offers a springtime mix of tropical afro beats to wrap the show. Mike Styles returns to the hosting chair for the first show of the year. He joins us with a guest set and interview with Tab Jones. Born Sam Berlin, Tab is a hip-hop producer and DJ from New Jersey who grew up in the underground club scene of NYC. In recent years he has produced projects with the likes of Pootie, Brainorchestra, and Dälek. Most recently he teamed up with Chilean producer Obrigxdo to produce a four song EP entitled, ‘VIVID’. These projects have received worldwide attention, being featured on official Spotify playlists and catching spins on Worldwide FM in Korea. He’s also kept up with a steady stream of DJ gigs in NYC and Seoul.‘Music Is My Weapon, My Weapon Is Love’ is the new album from Tab, a 5 song hip-hop project due out January 30th on Raw Force Records. Alejandro Ayala is a curator, organizer, educator, and dedicated Chicagoan. Known to many by his DJ name ‘King Hippo,’ Ayala hosted a monthly show on the globally-distributed QC Radio program on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM. For two decades he's been an active event producer and promoter, responsible for the long-standing Fresh Roasted series at The Whistler, the annual Preservation of Fire series, the legendary CHICAGOxLONDON showcase at London's Total Refreshment Centre, the DALLASxCHICAGO interstate artist exchange at Sleeping Village in 2018, the Chicago debut of Grammy-winning Australian prog-soul band Hiatus Kaiyote at The Double Door in 2014, and innumerable one-off events for myriad artists across Chicago's diverse landscape of venues (including Elastic Arts, Co-Prosperity, Transition East, Empty Bottle, and many more). Between 2020 and 2022 he worked as an instructor for After School Matters, for whom he designed a unique 'Event Planning & Production' curriculum. Currently, Ayala works as Head of Marketing for the International Anthem record label, where he's been a creative engineer behind album campaigns for Damon Locks' Black Monument Ensemble, Jaimie Branch, and Junius Paul, in addition to acting as photographer-in-residence (his photographs of Angel Bat Dawid have been published by The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Rolling Stone), and co-producing three albums by Makaya McCraven. In 2021 the Chicago Reader profiled Ayala as a Chicagoan of Note.

For over 3 decades, Gabe Real has prevailed as one of Southern California's top DJ's. Gabe has rocked countless dance floors with every kind of music possible. Focusing on Funk, Electronic, Reggae, Hip Hop, EDM, and Rock. He is invited annually to play the Safari VIP area of Coachella, as well as opening some of the festival's bigger stages. Gabe Real is known to dominate dancefloors across clubs and pubs, he knows how to keep the vibe right and the party going. He spent several years on KUCR's College Radio station on the revered "Ghetto Blaster Show," owned Stacks Record Store in Ontario, CA, and continues to operate a professional recording studio. He is a longtime member and resident of Beats of All-Nations, from our long running events to the radio show and an original member of the beloved "More Fire Mondays", a world famous rooftop reggae party in Riverside, CA. Mike Styles is the founder of Beats of All-Nations, a passion project that brings hip hop and electronic music back to the root with music collected from around the world. Styles has been specifically chasing Brazilian records for over 15 years. He has made multiple digging trips to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, dedicating the sound of his travels to events he curated in the Inland Empire from 2005-2016, including The Lapa Lounge (named after a neighborhood in Rio) and Re:Fresh Pomona's annual Brazilian Carnaval. Charnas is a journalist and storyteller who also wrote, 'The Big Payback, a Definitive History of the Hip Hop Business' and 'Work Clean' a book that applies chefs’ techniques to almost any of life's situations. He is a creator of the VH1 tv series 'The Breaks'. Contributor to NPR and Billboard and a professor at New York University. He joins Mike Styles to further push the discussion of arguably the greatest to ever do it. DJ Gabe Real is in the mix with another fresh blend of funky music from around the world. For our first show of 2022, we welcome DJ NewLife whose musical stylings have taken him to play in Rio, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Spain, Mexico, Portugal, the Dominican Republic, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Toronto and all over the United States. His world travels inspired the creation of the FEX Party (Foreign Exchange) in 2009, a party dedicated to exposing his hometown of Chicago to different cultural flavors in the nightlife scene and solidifying it as an international destination for music. He has opened for many acts including The Wu-Tang Clan, The Ohio Players and Hiatus Kaiyote to name a few. With a hip hop and house DJ background and mix aesthetic, NewLife honors and upholds this legacy in a unique fashion. Over the years, he’s channeled the inspiration from his travels into a sound that has morphed into a fusion you’d have to experience to understand.Gabe Real, Mike Styles and Mike B. are also in the mix, Blindherd is on the art and dublab is the transistor.
