We continue our discussion on surah al-Fatihah, that is the chapter titled al-Fatiha, with the third verse of the chapter. This verse is quite short, and reads: The Gracious, the Merciful. There are two key words in this verse: Rahman--which has been translated as Gracious---and Raheem--which has been translated as Merciful.
This is an introductory episode, where we we provide some basic background information before we dive into the study of the content of the Quran in subsequent episodes. We look at the beliefs about the Quran, the structure of the Quran, and the approach we will be taking in this program.
In this episode, we start with the second verse of surah al-Fatiha, or chapter titled al-Fatiha. The verse reads: All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds. The three key words in this verse that we haven’t covered previously are: hamd--which has been translated as praise, rabb--which has been translated as Lord and actually happens to be one of the key attributes of Allah, and alamin--which has been translated as all the worlds.
This is episode 1 and we will start out at the beginning of the Quran with the first chapter (or surah as it is known in Arabic). The first chapter is called al-Fatiha and it is actually a quite small chapter. It contains only 7 verses. The first verse reads: In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.
