Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Good, The Bad, and The What!? The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more! This week, Ryan and Chris are joined by returning guest Ryan Frakes (The CineMagic Theater) to discuss three darker takes on famous fairy tales with 2020's moody and atmospheric "Gretel & Hansel," 2011's "Twilight"-inspired "Red Riding Hood," and 1995's enjoyable bonkers "Rumpelstiltskin." Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Good, The Bad, and The What!? The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more! This week, in lieu of a normal GBW episode because of dual travel trips, Ryan and Chris are dusting off an episode from their now-defunct Patreon page for all listeners to hear. That of course is the feature length commentary of one of our mutually-favorite trashterpieces: 1982's "Pieces." Note: To listen to the commentary along with the film, hit play on the podcast at the same time you hit play on the film. This week, Chris and Ryan are joined once again by friend of the show Jordan Perry for the epic, definitive discussion of all three "Road House" films. Yes, you heard that right. Three. Wait, what is the other besides the classic 1989 Patrick Swayze vehicle and the recent 2024 remake with Jake Gyllenhaal, you might ask? Well, did you know there was a 2006 direct-to-video, name-only sequel called "Road House 2: Last Call"? Now you do! And we discuss them all here for almost three hours! Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Good, The Bad, and The What!? The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more! This week, Ryan and Chris dive into three action spy films that all deal with the remnants of the Cold War. We start with James Glickenhaus' kick-ass 1982 exploitation flick "The Soldier," which makes up for its small budget with impressive, wall-to-wall stunts and a scorching Tangerine Dream score. Then, we move into 2014's "The November Man," a disappointing return for Pierce Brosnan into the spy world and a disappointing reunion for him and his "Dante's Peak" director Roger Donaldson. Finally, we move into now two-time Oscar-winner Christopher Nolan's most polarizing film, the 2020 time-bending "Tenet." This week, Chris and Ryan dive into three island-set prison break films with the great Don Siegel/Clint Eastwood classic "Escape From Alcatraz," the disappointing Sylvester Stallone/Arnold Schwarzenegger team-up "Escape Plan," and the pulls-no-punches 1973 exploitation film "Terminal Island." Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Good, The Bad, and The What!? The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more! This week, Ryan and Chris dive into three sequels (or threequel in one instance) to the biggest hits of 1984 that were too early to be "legacyquels" but too late to strike while the iron is hot, which is the core question of this episode: can lightning strike twice? We start with one we believe does, with "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" from 1990, Joe Dante's glorious money-burn that self-sabotaged the series but in the most subversive way possible. Then, we move into 1994's "Beverly Hills Cop III," in which you can sadly feel the desperation in every frame, despite some positive attributes. Finally, we move into "Ghostbusters II" from 1989, a film that goes through the motion but still captures some of that magic from the original. The basis for this episode also stemmed from the upcoming releases of "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" (March 22) and "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley" (Summer 2024). This week, Chris and Ryan are joined once again by friend of the show Jordan Perry ("MILF Manor," "Shock Docs") to discuss three campy sci-fi alien invasion films that all harken back to '50s B-movies. We get contentious about "Killer Klowns From Outer Space," lament the missed opportunity in Tobe Hooper's "Invaders From Mars" remake, and revisit Tim Burton's "Mars Attacks!" and discover it has aged like a fine wine. Gillis' 1989 brain-scramble, THINGS! As a formative "what?" film for the both of us, we talk along, laugh along, and drink along with our favorite characters as we are never the same again. This week, Chris and Ryan dive into three neo-noirs in which the protagonist(s) find themselves with a case of deja vu and are caught between the past and the present with 1991's twisty Kenneth Branagh-directed (and starring) and Scott Frank-penned "Dead Again," 2007's comically misguided "The Number 23," and 2003's forgotten-to-time "The Singing Detective." This week, Ryan and Chris dive into the three Harley Quinn-centric films of the now-defunct DCEU. Going in chronological order, we start with our bad, which is unquestionably 2016's "Suicide Squad," arguably the worst film relative to its budget in the entire decade. Then, we move into 2020's exuberant and entertaining "Birds of Prey (or the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)" before finishing with James Gunn's delightful big-budget Troma-inspired "The Suicide Squad" from 2021. This week, Chris and Ryan dive into three apocalyptic films that are biblical in nature with Alex de la Iglesia's hilarious and horrifying 1995 flick "The Day of the Beast," the Christian propagandas (and largely boring) "A Day of Judgment" from 1981, and Darren Aronofsky's hugely ambitious and epic "Noah" from 2014. Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Good, The Bad, and The What!? The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more! This week, Ryan and Chris ring in the new year with three thrillers of different varieties (techno, procedural, and erotic) that are all set on or around New Year's. We start with Kathryn Bigelow's 1995 ahead-of-the-curve sci-fi thriller "Strange Days," which was co-written by her then-husband James Cameron. The result is a thrilling, bleak, and prophetic experience. Then, we move into 2000's "Under Suspicion," which features solid work from Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, and Monica Bellucci, but is let down by its terrible structure and un-engaging mystery. Finally, we discuss Roman Polanski's indulgent and (seemingly) troublingly autobiographical erotic thriller "Bitter Moon" from 1992. This week, Ryan and Chris do a bit more catching up with new releases that we saw on either side of the Christmas holiday. We start with holiday slasher "It's a Wonderful Knife" (streaming on Shudder), and then proceed to gush over "Godzilla Minus One" as well as Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Things" (both playing in theaters). At the end, Ryan has a couple brief thoughts on "Ferrari," "Wonka," "Migration," "The Color Purple," "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," and "Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire." Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Good, The Bad, and The What!? The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more! This week, Chris and Ryan end the holiday season by continuing to go further and further niche with our categories by discussing wrestling-centric Christmas films. We start with 2005's "Santa's Slay," which stars Bill Goldberg as a murderous Santa Claus. It's surprisingly fun and does exactly what it says on the box. Then, we move into 2020's "A Wrestling Christmas Miracle," another brainchild from "filmmaker" Ken Del Vecchio and the mind behind previous worst-ever film covered on GBW: "A Karate Christmas Miracle." Needless to say, it lives down to the hype. Finally, we discuss 1996's infamous "Santa With Muscles," starring Hulk Hogan and produced by Jordan Belfort. Yes, that Jordan Belfort. The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more! This week, Ryan and Chris are joined once again by friend of the show Jordan Perry ("MILF Manor," "Shock Docs") to discuss all three iterations of "Black Christmas." We start with the 1974 Bob Clark classic, a film that is still terrifying, tense, and above all else, ushered in the contemporary slasher film as we know it. Then, as we go chronologically, we move into our "What?" with the first remake from 2006; a film that is not conventionally good, but is stylish, nasty, and somewhat entertaining. Finally, we discuss the second remake from 2019, one whose socially-conscious intentions are in the right place, but bungles the execution. This week, Ryan and Chris are joined by friend of the show Jordan Perry ("MILF Manor," "Shock Docs") for a Catch-Up episodes on many of the films that have come out in November and December. The bulk of our discussion is around David Fincher's "The Killer" and Emerald Fennell's "Saltburn," but we also find time to discuss Alexander Payne's "The Holdovers," John Woo's "Silent Night," and "Dream Scenario," which features another great late-period Nicolas Cage performance.
