We’re back from our summer break and diving straight into our thoughts on vinyl news of now. While we may have recorded this in late July, the news is still relevant and ever evolving. In this episode we chat sustainability updates and the industry’s carbon footprint in steak sizes, the growing movement to cancel Spotify and AIs impact on what we're listening to; as well as Gen Z’s evolving relationship with vinyl and careers in the pressing ecosystem, plus the ever-shifting tariff drama that continues to impact physical media. Join us as we unpack what these changes mean in our own words. In this episode, we continue our journey from a virtual layover and head to South America. We caught up with Sandy Perez in Argentina just before her show. By day, Sandy is a graphic art director; by night, she's a vinyl selector. She’s also the founder of the Revuleta Vinyl Club, a collective dedicated to supporting and empowering women through workshops that keep vinyl culture alive. With a similar mission at heart, we discuss with Sandy how the vinyl market varies across borders, her experiences running her femme collective, her favorite records to spin, and more. As Henry Rollins says, “knowledge without mileage, is B.S.” and so we’re pausing our world tour to have a more academic conversation with Dr Rene Wiedner. Dr Wiedner is an associate professor of organization theory, at the University of Warwick - Coventry, and has been studying developments in vinyl record manufacturing for some time, with a particular interest in what happened between 1990 and 2015, a time when vinyl records were considered obsolete, and before the recent ‘vinyl revival’. He is currently writing an academic paper and a book on the topic, and joins us to discuss the importance of craft. And why we should be concerned with the preservation of skill, sharing knowledge, and how we learn and share manual skills. Here at Women in Vinyl, we are focused on creating educational opportunities and paving roads to jobs using that education. All aboard! This week we head to Jamaica by way of Asbury Park New Jersey, joined by our friend and guide Joe K. Not only is he a great story teller, but the founder and owner of HoldFast Records. We learn how Joe and his wife got started in the industry, the production work he cut his teeth on that gave him the tough skin, yet love for community that he takes with him on his trips to Jamaica. Joe has spent years cultivating relationships in Kingston, away from the safety of the resorts. While not for the faint of heart, with a tumultuous religious and government history, there is also such an important thoroughline of vinyl and music one which people would ‘climb the pole’ for. During these trips he’s met people who have created and built the reggae foundation we all know and love. It’s our final episode of the year, and we are closing it out on the thoughtful topic of diversification of vinyl. We’re looking at the topic not only from an employment, but collector view. We sat down with Women in Vinyl Advisory Board member, educator, author and researcher Dr Veronica Skrimsjö to discuss what she has uncovered on the topic, why certain generalizations and stereotypes happen and what we can do to break them down. Learn more on this topic and more in her upcoming publication: “The Vinyl Revival, Gender and Collecting Aesthetics” and in the meantime check out her first release, “'I, Me, Mine?', An Initial Consideration of (Popular Music Record) Collecting Aesthetics, Identities and Practices.” Find links below for more; and we look forward to seeing you next year! On this episode are excited to have conversation with Sara Pette and Alex Stillman co-owners of Outta Wax, a pressing plant and lathe cut studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded in the spring of 2020 we discuss the ups, downs and reality of starting a record pressing plant. The Outta Wax team are simply put - record nerds - who came together to open a factory whose primary purpose is to uplift and celebrate local and independent artists who kept the record industry alive through the decades - especially within their community. We enjoyed discussing the other side of the coin with a newer plant’s journey after hearing about United’s long standing place in our industry last month. Huge thanks to Stefani Sikora, singer, songwriter and performer for the use of her song ‘Good Days Are Coming’ off her new record The Shine. Find more on the album and order the record at www.stefanisikora.com/musicIf you’re listening to this in August, don’t forget that we have our ongoing 5 year Anniversary drive and raffle underway and the day that this goes live is August 16th which is our 5th birthday!
