You all may remember, probably because Dad won't let you forget, that he (finally) got a preseason prediction right. In the season preview episode, Dad called Duke going 9-3 and that's exactly what the Blue Devils did. Instead of breaking down what to expect in the Gator Bowl, we talk a lot about the changing face of college football. With the losses of QB1 and QB2 to the portal, Dad and I discuss how the portal is making bowl games entirely irrelevant. While players should be able to transfer, schools can't tell fans that bowl games matter when the calendar forces key players to transfer out prior to the end of the season.
Dad and I present differing views, to some extent, on these issues. I also make a prediction that players will unionize to protect themselves and the commitments that schools make to players. Given that the NCAA has become completely irrelevant and can't police its member institutions, courts are going to become the enforcement mechanism for "amateur" rules that apply to the NCAA. When that happens, players will unionize to protect themselves through collective-bargaining. It's the only thing that players can, and should, do.
I hope you enjoy this episode. It's an unusual format for Bull City Coordinators. If you don't like it, I blame our Richlandia correspondent and take no responsibility for it.

Friend of the pod Conor O'Neill stopped to talk about Duke, Wake Forest and a big matchup for the Blue Devils on Saturday. Before getting into Duke's chance to get to nine wins and deliver on Richlandia's pre-season W-L prediction, we cover the important story of the 70-80 pound Golden Retriever that knocked me down on my Monday morning run and injured my right leg. I'm still not back to normal, but given that I managed two-plus slightly painful miles this morning, I feel confident in saying I'll be ready for the game on Saturday.
During our talk, Conor breaks down Maalik Murphy's "salute" to Jonathan Brewer, the chaotic nature of Blue Devil wins this year, where Wake Forest is as a program and the problems inherent with strength of schedule discussions. Perhaps getting ahead of ourselves a bit, Conor and I discuss what losing Jordan Moore and Eli Pancol will do to the Duke receiving corps next season. In doing so, we learn what it feels like when doves cry (that's a Simpsons reference, people).
Now, one other thing we discuss is the two historic things that could happen with a Blue Devil win on Saturday. If Duke beats Wake, Manny Diaz would hold the record for the most wins by a Blue Devil head coach in his first season. If that weren't enough, Dad's preseason win prediction would (finally) be right. Dad thinks that would warrant a special podcast episode with him. Conor agrees. I'm not so sure. What do you all think about this?

Our old friend Steve Wiseman stopped by the podcast to recap Duke's big win over NC State and assess how the Blue Devils have done through ten games. We discuss that while it's defense first in Durham, the offense is starting to click. On top of that, Coach Diaz and his staff have spent time shoring up the kicking teams after Duke lost a tough one against SMU. As you'd expect, we talk about Coach Feeley taking teams into the sewer. With two games to go and a chance to get to nine wins, you best believe that the Blue Devils will do all they can to drag Virginia Tech and Wake Forest there.
Now, before the interview portion of the episode starts, I give my thoughts about NC State fans talking smack about how State shouldn't lose to Duke and how embarrassing it is for Doeren to be 1-3 against the Blue Devils. Let me be clear, NC State fans should get their facts straight. I hope you enjoy my take.

After losing two straight, Duke looks to get right against NC State on Saturday. It's a big game for the Blue Devils which I discuss briefly. Why a brief discussion? Well, just like Duke hopes to turn a page after two straight losses, I have to turn a page on weekly podcasts. I'm a little slammed at the moment and will cut back on the frequency of the episodes. I do plan on a few more episodes this season, but you won't get one each week. Regardless of my schedule, I'm taking the Blue Devils to win on Saturday. Let's speak win number seven into existence, folks!

After a heartbreaking loss against SMU, Duke has to turn its head and get ready for a Miami team that is on a roll right now. Aided by Cam Ward, the Hurricanes are having a great season. Fellow College Huddle member Curt of Miami Nights: A Canes Podcast stopped by to educate us about what the Blue Devils should expect on Saturday.
As a heads up, I will be at a wedding on Saturday and will have to watch the game later. Please, please do not DM me, tweet at me or otherwise contact me until I am able to watch the game. Unless Duke wins. Then please tell me all about how the Blue Devils got the win!

While Duke is bowl eligible in Year One of the Diaz Era, the Blue Devils are far from perfect. With SMU's high-powered offense coming to Wallace Wade on Saturday, Duke Nation needs a dose of hope, optimism and balls if we want to see our team get its seventh win. And there's no better place for that than the wonderful land that is Richlandia. That's right folks, our Richlandia correspondent stops by to give us his thoughts on this Blue Devil team and what we can expect when the Mustangs take the field.
Before we get to the episode, we listen to another very, very close to perfect prediction from Jason and I give my thoughts on the reaction to Tony Bennett's retirement. Things change, folks. Get used to it.

Jesse from Plant The Spear, a website and podcast covering the Seminoles, stopped by to educate us on Duke's Friday night opponent. While a lot of people have blamed DJU for Florida State's struggles, it turns out there's a lot more going on with the Seminoles than questionable quarterback play. In addition to that issue, there have been drops by receivers, bad plays on defense and problems with recruiting and the portal. Even though that sounds like a recipe for a Blue Devil win, keep in mind that Duke has never beaten Florida State. And it isn't like the Blue Devils have been on fire offensively of late. Given all that, both of us expect a tight game that will probably come down to the last possession. That said, I'm hoping the Duke fans storm the field to celebrate a Blue Devil win. It'd be another great win for Coach Diaz and his staff.
This was another great College Huddle collaboration. Hopefully we can keep doing these in the future.

Coach Fred Goldsmith returned to the podcast to discuss how teams handle hot streaks, the importance of bye weeks and his 1994 Duke team that finished 8-4 and played in the Hall of Fame Bowl. Coach told some stories about what his team accomplished that year and drops a real nugget about a basketball coach who helped fire up the team before a big win. It's always great to hear more about that wonderful season. We had some audio problems here and there, but it doesn't distract from the great talk we had.
Also, it turns out that Coach Goldsmith, and a lot of other legendary Blue Devils are coming back to Durham for for the SMU game this season. I plan to be there and hope to see Coach then.
Before the episode starts, we hear from former captain and podcast guest Ben Erdeljac. We also mention a few charities that are providing relief to people suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Because nothing says Rivalry Week like the last full week of September, it's time to preview Duke-UNC! To get you all ready for what to expect on Saturday, I put together another collaboration with the folks over at Heel Brothers who you remember from an episode earlier this year. This episode starts with me previewing the Blue Devils' season so far and discussing what Coach Diaz and the staff have been able to do. After that part wraps up, the episode transitions into a discussion about the Tar Heels and the aftermath of the loss to James Madison. It's a strange time at Chapel Hill.
We also get in a few voicemails including a surprise call that was made at halftime from Keenan Memorial Stadium. I wonder what that's all about. What does Richlandia think about this game? Stay tuned and you'll find out.
Now, folks, I'm sure a lot of you don't really like hearing so much from UNC podcasters, and I get that. But, if you stick around for the entire episode, you'll find that there's some common ground between our two fanbases when it comes to what most of us think about a certain team from Raleigh. Trust, as the kids say, trust.

Duke takes to the road Saturday to face a Middle Tennessee Blue Raider team that is in the midst of an historic rebuild. The team had to fill around 60 roster spots this offseason in addition to getting a new coaching staff. What can we expect from the Blue Devils' opponent on Saturday? Well, Jake from Blue Raider Pod stopped by to educate us on our opponent in Murfreesboro and get you ready for the game.
In addition to learning about Derek Mason and what he's doing in his first season at MTSU, we learn a little bit about Blue Raider Nation. After you listen to this episode, stop by Jake's pod and listen to me give my thoughts on Duke. This was another excellent College Huddle collaboration. I'm glad to be a small part of this new group.
There's a few voicemails to start the episode which raise an important question - who is the biggest Blue Devil fan? Is it Cash Rogers or my dad? Let me know in the comments or by leaving a voice mail. Speaking of which ...

Last year, we had Graham Chamberlain come on to update us on UCONN and preview the game. This year, we decided to do a joint episode for both our podcasts, so the setup is a little different from what you're used to. That said, it's a pretty darned good episode with a lot of information.
Graham brings us up to speed on a UCONN team dealing with some injuries and a lot of unknowns after playing an FCS team and then Maryland. I do my best to give fair and honest takes about the struggles we've seen offensively from Duke and how the recent injuries may affect the team on Saturday. While the defense is solid, the kicking teams have had some issues and the offense hasn't run the ball consistently yet. Oh, and I also learn that the kickoff time wasn't at 1pm like I thought. Glad I learned that before the game. Overall, I like what we've seen from the Blue Devils, but I remained concerned about the struggles in the running game. It's just too hard to win by just passing.
As far as a score prediction, while we both think Duke will win, I am not predicting a blowout. Until the Blue Devils kick the offense up a notch and get more balanced, I'm expecting close, or relatively close, games. We also have to see what the team can do when it's shorthanded at RB and at TE.

Our old friend Louie Vaccher returned to the podcast to bring us up to speed on the Wildcats. Both Duke and Northwestern are coming off slow starts in Week One. What will this mean for the Blue Devils on the road? Can they steal one on the road in Chicago? We'll have to wait and see. If Duke can get a win, this will be a big, big victory for Manny Diaz. Getting to 2-0 after the all the turnover and transfers would be a statement that Coach Diaz has the Blue Devils moving in the right direction.
We also spend a few minutes talking about Chris Collins and the great things he's been doing with the Wildcats.
Before the interview starts, we listen to a few voicemails and a text message. Please call the pod (540-632-0160), leave a message and you’ll get in an episode.

Duke legend Lee Rodio returns to the podcast and provides us with his win-loss prediction for the Blue Devils this season. We go through each game and tell you who we think will win and why. We also check in with Richlandia to get an update on the status of the OG Optimistic Duke Football fan. You'll like all our predictions as we're very optimistic about what the Blue Devils can do this season.
One thing you'll notice as we go through Duke's schedule is how much time we spend discussing the differing degree of schedule difficulty the Blue Devils' opponents have. This is one of the unfortunate side effects of conference restructuring - unbalanced schedules providing easier paths to a conference championship game. Sorry for an old man rant here, but there really is an upside to small conferences.

Our old friend Steve Wiseman stopped by the podcast to cover a few different topics. We start off by dissecting what all happened to Flip's draft stock and discuss the strange family dynamic that may have played a role in him falling as far as he did. After a brief detour from there to The ACC's fight for survival, we do a deep dive on what to expect from Duke this season. While the Blue Devils have some unknowns, there is a lot to be excited about. Steve brings us up to speed on the QB situation, talks about our four-game murder's row stretch and tells us why we should be cautiously optimistic about this season. The offense is going to be a Power Spread and will apparently involve the TEs. How can you not be excited about that?!?!
Trigger warning - we discuss Duke's recent history of underutilizing its TEs. Noah Gray is mentioned. Consider yourself forewarned. And it turns out that David Feeley is pretty darned important. Who knew? (That's sarcasm, we all know it.)
We also take a few minutes to cover the upgrades at Wallace Wade and ask I why the official Blue Devils' Twitter account isn't following me on Twitter. Come on, folks, make it happen.

WE GOT A BULL CITY COORDINATORS-CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY SIDEQUEST CROSSOVER!
Dr. Amy Pistone from basketball powerhouse Gonzaga stopped by to talk about sports in Ancient Greece. Before we delve into Antiquity, we cover Dr. Pistone's background, her ties to new ACC member Cal, her career as a football and basketball official and her experience running marathons. As you might guess, we take a number of sidequests including one about The Aeneid. If you're bothered by our detours, remember that the name of the podcast includes "SIDEQUEST", so, let me just say, "Sorry, not sorry." In all seriousness, this was a lot of fun.
In regard to Ancient Greek sports specifically, we cover how ancient Greeks competed in the Olympics in the nude and learn that women weren't allowed to participate in the Olympic Games with the exception of owning horses in carriage races. Women did have separate games they could participate in, however. The Greeks also had a form of MMA.
Given Dr. Pistone's connections The ACC, I'm cross-posting this on the Bull City Coordinators podcast. So, let me just say, as always, Go Duke!
Returning to Classical Antiquity, if you want to learn more about Dr. Pistone's work, check out her website which includes links to a lot of other podcasts she's been on. Those are very informative and I recommend them to you.

Our good friend Robert Brickey stopped by the podcast to recap Year Two of the Scheyer Era. In addition to the Elite Eight run, we discuss the changing landscape of college athletics, what Duke did during the portal this offseason and what to expect from the Blue Devils next season. We also cover how well Coach Scheyer managed injuries and a roster that was missing a few key pieces. Our conclusion? Duke fans should be excited about the program under Coach Scheyer.
If that weren't enough, you get to hear me talk about my son's high school lacrosse team! They came up just short in the state championship game and while we all would've loved to see the guys win, this was a great season all the way around. So, great season, son!
This is yet another fun talk with a Blue Devil legend. I know you’ll enjoy it.

NOTE - The day after we recorded this, Mike Wright committed to Northwestern. Two days afterwards, Sion James committed to Duke. Just ignore those parts of the podcast. Be super attentive to everything else, though.
Our old friend Conor O'Neill stopped by to give us his thoughts on Wake Forest and Duke as the programs head into 2024. Conor covers both programs for Rivals. He's got a good thing going over at Devils Illustrated - sign up, folks!
Before talking football, we took a few minutes to discuss the legacy of one of the greatest recording engineers (also known as a record producer) in music history, Steve Albini, who, sadly, passed away recently. He was a member of influential industrial rock bands like Big Black and Shellac. Albini's career as prominent independent musician gave him an opportunity to start recording for other bands and he made the most of it. During his legendary career, Albini worked with a wide variety of bands including the Pixies, Nirvana, The Breeders, The Jesus Lizard, PJ Harvey and Man or Astro-man?. The story behind the initial recording of Nirvana's In Utero is worth the time to read about. I enjoyed Albini's sound as a young kid living in a fairly boring town. RIP, man. RIP.
After discussing what the Deacs can expect, we spend some time talking the Duke QB battle and how we shouldn't overlook what Grayson Loftis might be able to do if he gets a shot. While we're both high on Maalik Murphy, it's hard not to think that Loftis might be able to make a name for himself in Durham. Oh, and Murphy has a canon for an arm and will showcase it as the Blue Devils will run a variation of the Air Raid. All right, all right, all right!
Conor and I also discuss the portal, NIL and how the NCAA needs to let schools employ athletes. And we get into a little basketball, too!
This is another good talk with a guy who is close to the program. I know you'll enjoy it.

Our old friend Matthew from All Sports Discussion stopped by to recap the 2023 ACC football season and give his thoughts on the upcoming season. During our 50 plus minute talk, we cover the disappointments of 2023 (beyond The Snub, we mention UNC and Miami), the bright side of last season (looking at you, Virginia Tech) and what to expect from our beloved conference this year. While the Hoos could be looking at hiring a new coach if things don't go well in Charlottesville, the Hokies look primed to be this year's Louisville as a result of winning the schedule lottery. All things considered, this could be a fun year for The ACC (while it still exists).
Oh, and we talk Conference Restructuring for a little bit because of course we did. Also, my audio was a little off. I got a new set of headphones and apparently didn't select the input properly. It happens.

News & Observer columnist Luke DeCock stopped by the pod to talk about the problems facing The ACC. Looking at you, former Big East teams and FSU. We also discuss the "legally interesting" (which is a kind way of saying "dubious") lawsuit filed by FSU against The ACC. Having read FSU's most recent Complaint, I don't think very highly of it. I had initially planned on doing a more detailed discussion of it, but that would be a waste of time. Which is pretty much what that lawsuit looks like to me. But I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again.
Luke also discussed the future of The ACC and how we got into this mess. This involves a hopefully interesting discussion about the pros and cons of Notre Dame's involvement with the conference. We also both comment on how we don't see an exit strategy for FSU. If another conference wanted the Noles, the TV overlords would've moved the school by now. Also, and this should be obvious, the TV partners running college football want a strong Grant of Rights. They don't want GoRs to be found unenforceable. The TV deals just won't work if member schools can invalidate them. Just sayin'!
