In this episode of Relationships Rule, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jimmy Page, leadership expert, author, and co-creator of the powerful One Word philosophy.Jimmy has spent decades helping leaders, teams, and organizations improve culture, performance, and purpose. Through his work with athletes, businesses, and ministries around the world, he has trained more than 100,000 leaders and continues to inspire people to live what he calls an unstoppable life.During our conversation, Jimmy shared how the simple idea of choosing one guiding word for the year can bring clarity and focus to every area of life. Instead of setting long lists of goals that often fade away, the One Word approach helps people align their decisions, habits, and relationships around a single intention. We also talked about the importance of relationships in shaping our lives and leadership. One of my favorite moments in this conversation was the story involving my previous guest, Coach Jim Johnson. When Coach Jim recently reconnected with Jimmy, he realized Jimmy had actually been one of the high school basketball players he coached years earlier. It was a wonderful reminder that relationships often come full circle in unexpected and meaningful ways.Jimmy’s message is simple but powerful: when you focus on what truly matters, you not only perform better, you build stronger relationships and live with greater purpose.Key Takeaways• A single guiding word can bring clarity and intention to your life and leadership.• Simplifying your focus often leads to stronger results than chasing many goals.• Purpose and performance are deeply connected to the relationships we build along the way.• Leaders who focus on culture, mindset, and wellness create stronger teams.• The right word can act as a compass for decisions throughout the year. You can reach Jimmy at: https://beunstoppable.live/ and https://getoneword.com/In appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. Trust feels more fragile than ever right now, and I believe leaders are being asked to navigate change, uncertainty, and higher expectations in ways we have not seen before. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Melissa Robinson-Winemiller, EQ expert, TEDx speaker, and author of The Empathic Leader, to talk about empathy as a practical leadership skill that builds trust, improves culture, and drives results.Melissa helped me broaden how I think about empathy. It is not only about “feeling what someone feels.” She explains emotional empathy, cognitive empathy, and self-empathy, and why leaders can take another person’s perspective even if they do not experience the same emotions. We also talk about the difference between real empathy and performative empathy, and why curiosity is one of the clearest signals that empathy is genuine. One of my favorite moments was hearing her simple leadership reminder: trust is often built through visibility and small actions, one person at a time. If you lead a team, manage from the middle, or you are stepping into leadership for the first time, this conversation will give you both insight and real-world tools you can use immediately.Key takeawaysEmpathy is both a gift and a skill. You can learn it, practice it, and get better at it over time.Cognitive empathy matters. You can understand someone’s perspective without taking on all the feelings, which helps prevent burnout.Trust is built through visibility and consistency. Culture forms in the everyday moments when people are watching what leaders do.Performative empathy is self-focused. Genuine empathy is other-focused and includes curiosity.Empathy and judgment cannot exist in the same space. The more we compare through our own lens, the harder it is to truly empathize. You can find Melissa at:https://eqviaempathy.com/melissa.a.robinson@gmail.comIn appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it.AND … Don’t forget to connect with me on LinkedIn and be eligible for my complimentary LinkedIn profile audit – I do one each month for a lucky listener!Connect with me:http://JanicePorter.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/janiceporter/https://www.facebook.com/janiceporter1https://www.instagram.com/socjanice/Thanks for listening! Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! This week, I sit down with Nick Richtsmeier to explore something many business owners feel but struggle to articulate: trust is eroding, and it is affecting every sales conversation.Nick challenges the traditional growth playbook. Instead of treating hesitation, resistance, or disengagement as problems to fix, he reframes them as valuable data. Distrust is not a failure. It is information. We talk about why digital systems reward speed and extraction over relationship building, and why small businesses feel the impact most. Nick introduces the idea of “trust nodes” as simple, human touch points that shape long-term loyalty far more effectively than funnels or persuasion tactics. If you have ever wondered why prospects seem more skeptical, why sales cycles feel longer, or why pushing harder no longer works, this conversation will give you language and clarity. At its heart, this episode is about returning to what actually grows business: authentic relationships built on transparency, alignment, and integrity.Key TakeawaysResistance in a sales conversation is not rejection. It is feedback.Distrust often reveals misalignment in expectations, incentives, or promises.Small relational moments, or trust nodes, matter more than automated campaigns.Traditional persuasion tactics are losing effectiveness in a skeptical market.Sustainable growth comes from strengthening relationships, not gaming systems. You can find Nick at: Culturecraft.comIn appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. In this episode, I sit down with Coach Jim Johnson, a long-time educator, championship basketball coach, and inspirational speaker who has spent decades helping people see what’s possible for them. Right away, I could see how closely Jim’s leadership style reflects what I’ve witnessed firsthand, with my husband. (He was a lifelong high school basketball coach too.) Leading with belief, care, and encouragement, and understanding that the words we choose can stay with someone for life.Jim shares honest lessons from early in his career, including a humbling season that forced him to rethink what leadership really requires. We talk about why “caring” and “challenging” are not opposites, and how the best leaders hold high standards while still building trust. Jim also explains how he became more intentional with communication, including a shift from “having the agenda” to becoming what he calls the Chief Question Asker. We also talk about the unforgettable J-Mac story, a moment that captured the world’s attention and still stands as a powerful reminder of what happens when a team chooses “we over me.” It’s a conversation about trust, team culture, resilience under pressure, and how relationships and words shape performance, confidence, and lives.TakeawaysWords last. The things we say as leaders can become part of someone’s confidence for years.Caring and challenging can live together. High standards work best when people also feel seen and supported.Relationships are the foundation. Trust doesn’t happen by accident. It takes intention, time, and knowing your people.Teams unite when leaders listen. Asking better questions and creating space for real input builds ownership.Clarity is kindness. Even hard feedback lands better when it’s clear, respectful, and explained.Jim can be reached at: https://coachjimjohnson.com/In appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. In this episode, I sit down with David Homan, master connector, podcaster, start-up founder, co-author of Orchestrating Connection and founder of Orchestrated Connecting. We explore how connection, generosity, and purpose can transform our businesses and our lives.David shares how he’s built a system to track and honor referrals — so that connectors get recognized for the value they create. We also talk about his insight that while most people are great at helping others, they often struggle to ask for what they need.We dive into why being intentional about who you surround yourself with matters, and how success often comes down to the right people in the right conditions. Key Takeaways:The best connectors give freely — but they also need to learn to ask for themselves.Every introduction has value; honoring the chain of connection strengthens trust.Purposeful communities grow when people align around shared values and generosity. The equation for meaningful success: the right people + the right conditions.True connection isn’t networking — it’s orchestrating relationships with intention.David can be found at: orchestratedconnecting.com In appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. In this episode I welcome back Stacey Brown Randall, author of The Referable Client Experience. Stacey challenges the old idea that referrals come from asking. We talk about why excellent work alone doesn’t lead to referrals, what clients are quietly thinking as they move through your process, and how small, human touchpoints build trust, safety, and pride, the emotions that make people willing to put their name behind you.Key TakeawaysGreat work ≠ referrals. You need both strong delivery and an intentional relationship layer.Map your client journey. Label every touchpoint “W” (work) or “R” (relationship) and aim for at least ~20% relationship touchpoints per stage.Honor the “quiet voice.” Anticipate what new, active, and alumni clients are feeling and address it proactively.Gifts should be about them, not you. Avoid logoed items for referral sources; extend brand through meaningful, client-centric tokens.Being small is a superpower. Your ability to connect personally is what big brands can’t replicate.Stacey can be found at: staceybrownrandall.com Her book is in book stores and on Amazon: https://a.co/d/0bhNAExm In appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. In this episode I’m joined by Dr. Robin Hills, founder of Ei4Change and a long-time educator in emotional intelligence. We explore why the future is human, how empathy drives real performance, and what leaders can do that AI never will. Robin shares how self-awareness translates into intelligent behavior, why personality assessments are only useful when we apply them, and how the seven basic human emotions show up in everyday leadership. We also talk cultural context, creating safe learning environments, and Robin’s updated take on emotional resilience in business – his updated 2nd edition of: The Authority Guide to Emotional Resilience in Business.Key TakeawaysEmotional intelligence is a success skill. Empathy, purpose, and values-based decisions inspire people in ways technology cannot.Self-awareness is the gateway to intelligent behavior. Know your strengths and limitations, then practice regulating emotions in real situations.Tools are helpful, not definitive. Personality assessments and AI are starting points. Make outputs relevant to your voice, culture, and context.Lead humans, not abstractions. Focus on relationships, collaboration, and creating environments where people can learn and contribute. The seven basic emotions matter at work. Recognizing blends of joy, anger, sadness, fear, surprise, disgust, and contempt helps leaders respond wisely.Robin can be found at:Website: https://ei4change.com/LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/robinhillsIn appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. Seeing is Believing! That’s one of the mantras of my guest, Todd Cherches. Todd has built his career, and written a book called: Visual Leadership: Leveraging the Power of Visual Leadership and Life.In this interview we explore how visual thinking can transform the way we communicate, connect, and build trust in business. Todd shares why helping people “see what you’re saying” isn’t about artistic talent, but about clarity, intention, and empathy. We talk about how visuals, metaphors, and storytelling create shared understanding, especially when ideas feel complex or abstract. Todd also explains why visual leadership helps prospects, clients, and referral partners feel more confident, engaged, and aligned. This conversation is a reminder that trust grows faster when people truly understand you — and visual thinking is one of the most powerful ways to make that happen.Key TakeawaysVisual thinking helps people understand ideas more quickly and remember them longerTrust increases when communication feels clear, human, and relatableYou don’t need to be “creative” to use visuals effectively in businessMetaphors and stories make abstract ideas tangible and meaningfulHelping others see your thinking builds confidence and credibilityTodd can be reached at: https://www.toddcherches.com/ or on LinkedIn at: linkedin.com/in/toddcherchesIn appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. Today I speak with yoga therapist and educator Lisa Danahy about how the skills that calm a classroom can transform our relationships at home and at work. We explore safety before instruction, why our energy is contagious, and how a 15-second movement and breath reset can change the tone of a meeting. Lisa makes complex nervous system concepts simple and practical, and she reminds us that inclusivity starts with how we regulate ourselves.Key TakeawaysSafety first. When people don’t feel safe, social engagement and executive function drop. My role as a parent, teacher, or leader is to help create safety so learning and collaboration can happen.Your state sets the tone. Mirror neurons mean our energy is contagious. If I arrive grounded, I become a co-regulator for the room.Breath changes state. Two slow breaths with extended exhales can activate calm and refocus attention quickly.Movement matters. A quick “shake and breathe” resets focus and productivity for groups in classrooms or conference rooms.Inclusion is energetic. Inviting people to show up as they are, and modeling regulation, builds belonging for neurodiverse kids and adults alike.Resources mentionedLisa’s site: CreateCalm.orgBook: Creating Calm in Your ClassroomIn appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tracy Poizner, founder of Space | Time Alchemy, about the powerful role of presence in how we connect and lead. Tracy helps high-performing women in tech and innovation recalibrate their energy so they can attract the right people, without forcing outcomes or overextending themselves. We explored how subtle energetic shifts can reshape the quality of our relationships, how intuition pairs beautifully with strategy, and why authenticity isn’t about saying the perfect thing; it’s about how we show up. Tracy’s blend of science, consciousness, and practical business insight offers a refreshing reminder that connection thrives in alignment, not effort.Key TakeawaysPresence Precedes Strategy – Before any tactic or outreach, how we show up sets the tone for every relationship.Energetic Alignment Attracts Opportunity – When our values and energy are congruent, the right people naturally find us.Authenticity Is Magnetic – Influence doesn’t come from performing; it comes from resonance.Intuition and Planning Co-Exist – Listening inward supports clearer, more strategic business decisions.Connection Requires Clarity – The quality of our relationships mirrors our internal alignment.Connect with Tracy:Website: http://tracypoizner.comPodcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/limitless-a-space-time-alchemy-podcast/id1762946819In appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it.AND … Don’t forget to connect with me on LinkedIn and be eligible for my complimentary LinkedIn profile audit – I do one each month for a lucky listener!Connect with me:http://JanicePorter.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/janiceporter/https://www.facebook.com/janiceporter1https://www.instagram.com/socjanice/Thanks for listening! Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! As we step into a new year, I decided to begin with something close to my heart — connection. This solo episode is all about how we can start 2026 by building and strengthening R.E.A.L. relationships: those built on trust, appreciation, and genuine human care.A personal story from my husband’s recent surgery reminded me that kindness and connection show up in unexpected ways, and that people remember how we make them feel. From that experience grew this reflection on the R.E.A.L. Connection System, the framework I teach to help people and businesses stay connected in meaningful ways:Refresh. Engage. Appreciate. Leverage. In this episode, I walk through each of these pillars and how they show up in real life, from refreshing your LinkedIn presence, to engaging intentionally online and offline, to showing appreciation in ways that leave a lasting impression.Key TakeawaysRefresh your presence so your online identity reflects who you are today, not who you were years ago.Engage with intention — show up where your people are and participate meaningfully.Appreciate authentically — small gestures can create emotional anchors that last for years.Leverage relationships — trust creates opportunity, and every introduction or referral begins with connection.Choose one pillar to focus on this year — start simple and stay consistent. When you build your business from a place of genuine care, everything else unfolds more naturally.I’d love to hear how you’re applying the R.E.A.L. principles in your business. Connect with me and share one small way you’re refreshing, engaging, appreciating, or leveraging relationships this month and if you’d like to explore how to implement the R.E.A.L. No matter what time of year it is, it’s always worth checking in with a big question: Am I really charging what I’m worth? That’s why I’m bringing back this standout conversation with John Ray—business advisor, pricing strategist, and author of The Generosity Mindset. John breaks down the emotional side of pricing, how generosity and confidence go hand-in-hand, and why most of us are selling ourselves short—sometimes without even realizing it.If you’re a coach, consultant, or service-based business owner who struggles with pricing, value conversations, or feeling awkward about “selling,” this episode will change the way you think—and charge—for your work.Let’s revisit this insightful episode with John Ray.Most people undercharge not because they’re greedy, but because they underestimate their true value.I had such an eye-opening conversation with John Ray—business advisor, pricing strategist, and author of The Generosity Mindset. We talked about why pricing is way more emotional than most people admit, and how confidence, perceived value, and intentional generosity all shape the way your business grows. John breaks down the common pricing traps entrepreneurs fall into (like hourly billing or selling from your own wallet), and how asking better questions can shift everything about how you show up and get paid.Whether you are a coach, consultant, or creative service provider, this episode will make you think differently about how you price your work and position your value. John's generous insights (true to his brand!) help you feel more confident charging what you're worth—and building relationships that actually last.Highlights:Why your clients usually see more value in you than you see in yourself. How generosity, when done with intention, leads to better pricing and deeper trust.A new way to think about pricing based on transformation, not time. What it really means to have a “value conversation” with clients.Simple mindset shifts that make selling feel less awkward and more authentic.Connect with John:Website: https://www.johnray.co/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnray1/ Podcast: https://www.johnray.co/podcast-price-and-value-journey In appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. What if the real measure of success isn’t how high you fly but how deeply you connect?Jim Carpenter has spent decades helping families and business owners build wealth and preserve their legacies — yet what sets him apart isn’t his financial expertise, it’s his heart for people. A lifelong pilot and advisor, Jim built his business not from spreadsheets, but from relationships — flying thousands of miles to meet clients in person and sending simple, meaningful gestures that made them feel seen and remembered. In our conversation, Jim shares how aviation became a metaphor for life and leadership — one built on preparation, balance, and care. His upcoming book, Beyond the Runway, reveals how small, consistent acts of attention keep us grounded even while we’re reaching for more. From faith and family to business and service, Jim reminds us that connection is what keeps everything aloft. This episode is a warm reminder that real legacy isn’t written in numbers, but in the lives you touch along the way.Highlights:1. The Flight Path of a Relationship-Driven Career - How Jim’s journey from family insurance to aviation taught him that the best business is built on trust, not transactions.2. What “GUMPS” Can Teach Us About Life - Discover how a pilot’s pre-landing checklist — gas, undercarriage, mixture, prop, seatbelt — became a life philosophy for staying grounded in purpose.3. Turning Service into Legacy - Learn how charitable estate planning and simple acts of generosity created deeper meaning in Jim’s career — and lasting impact for his clients.4. Why Connection Always Outperforms Automation - Jim shares how a handwritten card or a thoughtful gesture outshines any corporate campaign when it comes to building loyalty.5. Living Beyond the Runway - Find out how Jim applies his “quiet maintenance” mindset to relationships, encouraging us all to slow down, check in, and stay true to what matters most.Connect with Jim:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jimlcarpenter/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Jim.Carpenter0417 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jcarpenter_0417/ In appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. In this episode, I’m joined by Celeste Warren, internationally recognized Diversity, Equity & Inclusion leader and author of The Truth About Equity: What It Really Is, What It Isn’t, and Why Everyone Wins When We Get It Right. After decades leading DEI at a global corporation, Celeste now helps organizations of all sizes, especially small businesses, reshape how they think about equity. Our conversation explores what DEI looks like without a big HR team or corporate budget, and how equity can be a relationship-building tool rather than a checklist.Celeste shares her rock-and-fence analogy to explain equity in the clearest, most practical way I’ve heard, and we talk about the power of self-discovery, trust, and dialogue in creating more inclusive relationships at work and beyond.Key TakeawaysEquity isn’t equality: it’s about giving people what they need to succeed and removing barriers so everyone can thrive.Relationship building begins with discovery: learning about others and yourself at the same time.Small actions create big change: inclusive leadership often starts with noticing, listening, and amplifying overlooked voices.Representation matters: Celeste’s non-profit, Destination STEM, helps students of color see what’s possible in science and technology careers.Everyone wins with equity: when we lead with inclusion, we strengthen our businesses, our communities, and our human connections.Connect with Celeste:Website: https://destinationstem.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/celestewarrenllc/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/destination_stem/ In appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. If you want to connect and influence others authentically, you need to understand the part of the brain that makes every decision. In this episode, I sit down with Tim Ash, bestselling author of Unleash Your Primal Brain and co-author of Primal Dating, to explore how our primal brain still runs the show in business, marketing, and leadership today.Tim shares why emotion, not logic, drives every choice we make, and how this understanding can help us lead, market, and communicate with more empathy and purpose. We also talk about culture, belonging, and the importance of purpose as a compass for every decision.Key Takeaways:Emotion always wins. Every decision starts with feeling; logic only justifies it later.Inaction is the brain’s default. To move people, create emotional urgency, not pressure.Culture is built through connection. True culture happens in shared challenges and genuine modeling.Purpose guides direction. Having a bigger-than-you purpose clarifies your yeses and nos.Relationships are everything. We are wired to bond through shared experiences, not transactions.Tim’s thoughtful, science-based approach to influence reminds us that connection begins where emotion lives. Understanding the brain helps us build trust in ways that are natural, ethical, and deeply human.Connect with Tim:Website: timash.comLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/timashIn appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it. Have you ever read your own website or LinkedIn post and thought, “That doesn’t sound like me at all”? I know I have. This week on Relationships Rule, I sit down with Patricia Viscount — a brand voice strategist and former Canadian Army officer — who helps professionals find their true voice in business. Patricia believes your real advantage isn’t in fancy words or perfect grammar… it’s in sounding like yourself. We talk about why so many people lose their natural voice when they write, how AI can actually help you stay authentic (when you use it correctly), and why your clients’ words might be the best copy you’ll ever have.If your content feels stiff or too “professional,” this conversation will help you loosen up, sound more genuine, and connect more easily with the people you want to reach.Listen in to discover:The simple way to catch “robot-speak” in your writingHow to use AI tools without losing your voiceWhy consistency across all your messages builds real trustListen now and get ready to sound more like yourself — because that’s where real connection starts.Connect with Patricia:Website: https://patriciaviscount.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patricia-viscount/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/patriciaviscountconsulting/ In appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by checking this presentation page - you won’t regret it.
