🎙️When I asked Grace what is was like to be a single mom raising a toddler in a teepee with no running water or electricity, she laughed and said she was lucky because Ian didn’t toddle very much. In fact, babies with Down syndrome tend to take it slower than most kids and as Ian grew, Grace made a point at taking everything slowly but seriously and to focus on life skills.As an educator, she had worked with many kids before advocating for her own to get what he needed educationally. Today, on the sixth episode of Décalés Out of Sync, Ila and I talk about the school of life like you’ve never heard of it before. Ila is an occupational therapist and the co-founder of Zeno Mountain Farm, a camp for people with and without disabilities based in Vermont. As an occupational therapist, she helps people live independently. It’s an interesting balance to find, they say, to know what we are responsible for, if we are supposed to stand up for the other and how to. 🎙Today on Décalés - Out of Sync, Kate describes herself as so friendly and extroverted that social boundaries can be difficult to process. People with Williams Syndrome all share that outgoingness.She reflects on independence and the importance of taking the same steps as her peers. 🎙Today on Décalés - Out of Sync, Hannah talks about embracing her full identity through theater, community and learning how to ask for help.
The theater is where she feels most at home. “Nothing can be erased or edited on stage. I can come as I am, my mobility aids are just a part of my character and I am a part of the story, just like everyone else”.
She and her twin were born 27 weeks premature and Hannah was diagnosed with cerebral palsy after having a brain injury at birth. Not so many kids shared their experience in rural Vermont where they live, making it hard for her to embrace her full identity... Until she discovered Zeno Mountain Farm and later on a women’s empowerment program where people with disabilities were expected to help each other. For the first time, it wasn’t the able bodied’s job.
As she thinks about college applications next year, her top priority is to find a fully accessible campus.🎙️

🎙️Today on Décalés - Out of Sync... what Will Halby and his family envisioned many years ago exists today as an alternate reality: Zeno Mountain Farm.
The dream was for adults with and without disabilities to meet around theater and film projects. What started as a small non-profit in California became a year round camp community in Vermont that ensures all bodies and minds are represented on stage and on screen, participating in life to the fullest of their abilities.
It is free, secular, grounded in friendship and common sense: we all have needs that must be met, let’s see if we can take it to another level.
Zeno creations tell original, whimsical, quirky stories that are not about disability, shifting the narrative and blurring the invisible boundaries between disabled and non-disabled.🎙️

🎙️Today on Décalés - Out of Sync, Krista talks about the art of letting go. Becoming a mother of twins at 35 inevitably rocks your world, and even more so when one of them suffers a brain injury at birth. As she entered the realities of parenting and disability, she sought for balance between problem solving mode and grief, leaning on her husband and standing up together, trusting schools and professionals when she knew how to help them at home. Current situation: the twins are leaving for college, and number three is in full adolescence.

On a enregistré cet épisode à Bruxelles en juin dernier et je suis très heureuse d’entamer ce chapitre un peu parallèle avec elles, celui de podcasts réalisés pour des porteurs de projets en lien avec le handicap 👑
Élise et Eléonore sont amies de toujours. Elles ont grandi dans la même rue et ont toutes les deux des frères et sœurs en situation de handicap. C’est à partir de leurs expériences personnelles et familiales qu’elles ont déployé les actions de FratriHa en Belgique. Dans cet épisode, elles racontent. 🎙️

🎙️Quand son fils Isaac a eu son accident, quand il n’en est pas sorti indemne, quand il a fallu tout réinventer, Giulia n’en était pas à son premier drame.

🎙 L’été, chez Elisabeth, on parle quatre langues : l’espagnol pour sa belle-fille cubaine, l’anglais pour son gendre américain, la langue des signes pour un de ses fils et le français pour les autres.
Devenue orthophoniste et linguiste pour mieux comprendre les besoins de ses enfants, son histoire laisse imaginer un parallèle entre la construction subtile du langage et celle d’une famille : chaque nouvelle pièce du puzzle impacte inévitablement les autres.🎙

🎙️ Être le père d’Alexandre et Pauline, c’est élever des jumeaux aux caractères et aux besoins opposés.
Alexandre a une polymicrogyrie qui l’affecte physiquement et mentalement. Pauline, qui "va bien", s’affirme de plus en plus fort en famille.
Comme tous les parents, Philippe apprend. Comment trouver l’équilibre et apporter à chacun ce dont il a besoin ? Comment les épargner de la dureté du monde sans projeter ses propres inquiétudes sur eux ?
Pour faire bouger les lignes d’un système opaque et nécrosé, pour comprendre la société, pour protéger ses enfants, il s’engage « là où les décisions sont prises. 🎙️

🎙️Noël 2019, Morgane a vingt-trois ans lorsqu'elle apprend qu'elle est enceinte de six mois et demi. C'est un déni de grossesse. On lui avait pourtant dit qu'elle ne pourrait pas avoir d'enfant après des troubles alimentaires à l'adolescence. Nate naitra à huit mois.
Rapidement, son développement semble stagner. Avec Victor, on leur fait comprendre que ce sont de jeunes parents maladroits, mais les journées se transforment en semaines puis en mois à l'hôpital, jusqu'au diagnostic : il a le syndrome d'Allan Herndon-Dudley, un polyhandicap sévère, peu connu des professionnels.
Leur nouvelle vie commence, dictée par le sourire de Nate.🎙️

Marius est l'homme aux mille rencontres et à l'irresistible joie de vivre. Tantôt sur scène avec M, en cuisine avec Yannick Alleno, ou dans le livre "Les Bienheureux" de Julien Dufresne-Lamy, il nous emmène dans son tourbillon de la vie avec le syndrome de Williams.
🎙 Le mois prochain, Marius aura 20 ans.
Bientôt, il quittera son IME, emménagera dans un foyer, cherchera du travail. C'est un changement qu'il attend depuis longtemps.
Il dit que ce qu’il y a de plus difficile dans le syndrome de Williams, ce sont les émotions. Partager son histoire est une manière de les comprendre, et d'aider les autres.🎙

🎙️ En 2021, Paul a décidé de tenter sa chance à Montpellier. Paris était devenu trop petit, l’ESAT le tenait en retrait, la famille et les amis ne suffisaient plus.
En un an à peine, il se révèle et repousse les frontières invisibles de son monde.
Se sent-on jamais prêt à tout quitter ?🎙️

🎙 Que quelqu'un d'autre qu'elle-même lui impose des limites ou qu'on la prive du bonheur d'être mère, certainement pas.
Même s'il faut accepter de ne pas pouvoir porter son enfant debout, même s'il courra plus vite qu'elle dès ses premiers pas, même s'il perdra une certaine innocence trop tôt, face au regard des autres.
Romane, née grande prématurée et dont le frère jumeau n'a pas survécu à la naissance, avance, bien entourée, avec prudence et lucidité. 🎙

1🎙 Maxime comprend qu’il est bipolaire à 22 ans. Plongeon dans un monde inconnu, celui de la psychiatrie, qu’il décrit comme à la fois passionnant et flippant.
Cinq ans plus tard, il co-fonde la Maison Perchée à partir d’un constat : il manque un lieu entre l’hôpital et le retour à la vie quotidienne. Il manque de la pair-aidance, une parole libérée, une maison ouverte à toutes et à tous.🎙
