Some time later I asked his permission and came back to Jerusalem. Here I learned about the evil thing Eliashib had done in providing Tobiah a room in the courts of the house of God. I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah’s household goods out of the room. I gave orders to purify the rooms, and then I put back into them the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense. Remember me for this, my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully done for the house of my God and its services. In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine, grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into Jerusalem on the Sabbath. Therefore I warned them against selling food on that day. I rebuked them and called curses down on them. I beat some of the men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath in God’s name and said: “You are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor are you to take their daughters in marriage for your sons or for yourselves.”

When we take a step toward God, we find He’s already reaching out to us. As James 4:8a says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” Life is simply better together—not just with one another, but with the One who invites us closer every day. I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do. I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses.” The List of the Exiles Who Returned Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt. So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return.

Following Jesus isn’t easy. There are days when it feels like the opposition, the pressure, or just the tiredness is too much. But we’re reminded to “Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” — Hebrews 12:3. This reminds us that we don’t run this race alone. Jesus has gone before us and he places us in community so that when one of us is weary, others can help carry the load. Now you are selling your own people, only for them to be sold back to us!” They kept quiet, because they could find nothing to say. So I continued, “What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of our Gentile enemies? I and my brothers and my men are also lending the people money and grain. But let us stop charging interest! Give back to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves and houses, and also the interest you are charging them—one percent of the money, grain, new wine and olive oil.” “We will give it back,” they said. “And we will not demand anything more from them. We will do as you say.” Then I summoned the priests and made the nobles and officials take an oath to do what they had promised. I also shook out the folds of my robe and said, “In this way may God shake out of their house and possessions anyone who does not keep this promise. So may such a person be shaken out and emptied!” At this the whole assembly said, “Amen,” and praised the Lord. And the people did as they had promised.

By night I went out through the Valley Gate toward the Jackal Well and the Dung Gate, examining the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire. Then I moved on toward the Fountain Gate and the King’s Pool, but there was not enough room for my mount to get through; so I went up the valley by night, examining the wall. Finally, I turned back and reentered through the Valley Gate. The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, because as yet I had said nothing to the Jews or the priests or nobles or officials or any others who would be doing the work. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me. They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.

Artaxerxes Sends Nehemiah to Jerusalem In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before, so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.” I was very much afraid, but I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?” The king said to me, “What is it you want?”Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.” Then the king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked me, “How long will your journey take, and when will you get back?” It pleased the king to send me; so I set a time. I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah? And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the royal park, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy?” And because the gracious hand of my God was on me, the king granted my requests. So I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates and gave them the king’s letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry with me. When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about this, they were very much disturbed that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.

The Promise of the new economy is that in God’s Kingdom, nothing surrendered is ever wasted. In Jesus, even our dying-to-self becomes the seed of a bigger, more beautiful life for many. “Very truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” — John 12:24. In the economy of Jesus, loss is not the last word. Letting go of control, status, or security for love’s sake feels like a kind of dying, but God is quietly turning that hidden surrender into a harvest of justice, mercy, and new community. What if the “new economy” God is inviting us into is one where: generosity replaces competition, shared tables replace isolated success, and faith, not fear, sets the budget of our lives? As we step into this new year, may we dare to plant our small seeds—our time, our gifts, our resources, our stories—trusting that Jesus is already preparing a harvest far beyond what we can see. In Luke 1:45, it is written: “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfil his promises to her!” Mary’s joy came from her trust in God’s promise. This Christmas, may we find our joy in knowing that God’s love is faithful and His promises never fail. Even in waiting, even in uncertainty—joy is born when faith takes root. And without any question that oath is binding. God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Celebrate together—God invites us to pause, rejoice, and unite as a community! “Three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me,” says Exodus 23:14 (NIV). Life’s battles can drain us, but Jesus reminds us of a deeper truth: he came so we might have life—and have it to the full. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

True generosity isn’t measured by the size of our gift, but by the heart behind it. In the midst of rising need and widening gaps in the city, Jesus spotlights the widow who gave all she had—she trusted God fully with her small, sacrificial gift (Mark 12:43–44 NIV). Trusting God with our time and serving others is more important than ever. In a city where everything moves fast and uncertainty is everywhere, Psalm 31:14-15 reminds us that each moment is in God’s hands. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.” So Moses brought their case before the LORD, and the LORD said to him, “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them. “Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.’”

In Romans 8:15, Paul reminds us that we are no longer slaves to fear, but beloved children who can cry out, “Abba, Father.” In our city’s fast pace, this is our holy pause—an alliance of hearts aligned with God’s Spirit. There’s something sacred about the stillness before the city wakes. In Mark 1:35, we see Jesus very early in the morning, while it was still dark, slipping away to a quiet place to pray. Even amidst crowds, demands, and noise, He made time for stillness—not out of routine, but to stay rooted in His Father’s love. Here in Hong Kong, our days move fast—MTRs packed before sunrise, inboxes buzzing before breakfast. Yet Jesus reminds us: it’s in the quiet, not the hurry, that our souls find rhythm and renewal. Grace is God’s gift and faith is our response—let’s live it out boldly as we know that happiness is faith in action—real, everyday steps trusting God’s love, right where we are. Happiness is gratitude in action. In Luke 17, only one man returned to thank Jesus, and in that moment his joy was complete. Gratitude turns healing into worship, and blessing into joy. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

Happiness isn’t found in money, power, pleasure, or prestige—it’s found in God alone. Jesus reminds us: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21 (NIV) The world tells us to measure happiness by what we own, achieve, or enjoy. But those things fade. God calls us to set our hearts on Him, the One who never fails, the wellspring of lasting joy and peace.
