Dr. Steven Miletto has been an educator in Georgia for 34 years. He has served public school families as a history teacher, assistant principal, and high school principal. In 2009, he was the Georgia Principal of the Year and a finalist for NASSP/MetLife National Principal of the Year in 2010. Currently, he is the executive director of a regional educational service agency (RESA) in Georgia (US).

Her team specializes in executive functioning coaching and academic support grounded in Universal Design principles to help students build confidence and self-advocacy.

Zach VanderVeen and Chris Rose are the Co-founders of Abre, a modern K–12 data platform that centralizes tools, analytics and information for educators, students and families. They serve as the company's Chief Innovation Officer and Chief Product Officer, respectively.
Zach and Chris began their careers in the classroom as teachers, later taking on roles across education including administrators, coaches and technology directors. Lessons Learned from Jobs Before My Education Career - What's My Point? This is episode 815 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Over the last three episodes I shared with you stories from my earliest jobs and the lessons learned. I discovered that as I reflected on these lessons that there was some common ground. There were lessons that overlapped.
From the grocery store, McDonald's, and the plumbing supply warehouse the following lessons that were part of the job then still impact me in my career in education:
1. Own Your Job.
2. Be a Teammate.
3. Be Positive.
4. You Always Have Something to Do.
In this episode I reflect on those 4 lessons and how they still are part of my work world today.

Lessons I Learned from Jobs Before My Education Career: Plumbing Supply Warehouse. This is episode 814 of Teaching Learning Leading K12.
Did you have a job or two before you entered your career field? Maybe you started in high school and then college before finally entering the path that you were ultimately focused on achieving. Just to be clear, when I say a job, I do mean working for someone other than your father or parent or guardian. Actually, having a boss and getting an official paycheck - you know one where taxes are removed from your gross pay?
My third job that fits this description was at a plumbing supply warehouse. In this job my main purpose was to load and deliver plumbing supplies for a plumbing company at a job site. I had two immediate supervisors and interacted with the owner of the shop. I learned to make sure that I helped to load my delivery orders and to become a safer driver. Interactions with others taught me to bite my lip and treat people as I wanted to be treated. Team membership was important. And once again, the adage "you never have nothing to do" was pervasive in this job, as well as at McDonalds, and the grocery store.
Join me as I reflect on being a team member, owning the job, treating others as I wanted to be treated, and living with the understanding that "you always had something to do."

Did you have a job or two before you entered your career field? Maybe you started in high school and then college before finally entering the path that you were ultimately focused on achieving. Just to be clear, when I say a job, I do mean working for someone other than your father or parent or guardian. Actually, having a boss and getting an official paycheck - you know one where taxes are removed from your gross pay?
My second job that fits this description was at a McDonald's. I started out on the front counter, and I was not fast enough for the cash register, so I was moved to the grills. I was very thankful for that move. I cooked hamburgers, fries, chicken McNuggets, breakfast sandwiches and prepared other stuff. What I discovered that I was very good at was being focused on closing the lines down, cleaning the cooking surfaces, and the equipment. I was put on a team of others who were very good at closing. This one assistant manager loved having us as his closing team because we saved him from having to use too many overtime hours.
Working at McDonalds I had many lessons that have stayed with me forever. On this episode I share some of what I learned. A recurring theme from the grocery store that appears at McDonalds is that "you always have something to do."

Lessons Learning from My First Jobs - Grocery Store Bagger. This is episode 812 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Did you have a job or two before you entered your career field? Maybe you started in high school and then college before finally entering the path that you were ultimately focused on achieving. Just to be clear, when I say a job, I do mean working for someone other than your father or parent or guardian. Actually, having a boss and getting an official paycheck - you know one where taxes are removed from your gross pay?
My first job that fits this description was grocery store bagger for a local branch of Pantry Pride. A fairly large store that was just about everywhere in Florida during the 70s and 80s. In this role I bagged groceries and offered to help you take them to your car. That was my main purpose, but the role had many other requirements. Some of them included - spot mopping, straightening aisles and restocking shelves, retrieving shopping carts from the park lot, and assisting customers. It was a great learning experience. I had a great boss and several co-workers that made time spent fun.
While I was a grocery bagger, I learned several skills and lessons that have been impactful to this day. During this reflection I will share those skills that have remained with me all these years. This episode is the first in a multiple part series that looks at these early jobs and what stayed with me as I moved forward in my adult life.

Dennis A. Feece - The Phantom Grasp: A T.B. Stone Mystery. This is episode 806 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Dennis A. Feece may not sound like your typical novelist who crafted a murder mystery, but he calls upon a variety of experiences, hobbies, and schooling to create the realism in his books - his latest one is The Phantom Grasp: a T.B. Stone Mystery.
For three decades, he engaged in a career of book manufacturing, serving from frontline supervisor to vice president of operations. He worked for several companies, including Bertelsmann, Maple-Vail Book Manufacturing, and RR Donnelley. He then became a Pastoral Associate at a local church, serving for several years.
Feece earned a B.S. majoring in Psychology and minoring in Religious Studies from College Misericordia in PA. He earned an MA in Theology from University of Scranton in PA.
Born and raised in Plymouth, Indiana, he has also lived in CT, NH and now resides in Montrose, PA. He enjoys weightlifting, writing, and exploring his spiritual curiosity.

Annamarie Omanga - The Magnolia School: An Independent K-8 School for Girls. This is episode 803 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Originally from Chicago, Annamarie Omanga has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She began her career in the middle school classroom and then spent six years directing a supplemental education program for inner city youth in Chicago. Annamarie then took her teaching skills to the business arena where she started in training and development and then enjoyed a career in Human Resources with Cap Gemini America and AIG.
Throughout her career, Annamarie has presented a variety of seminars and given talks on a wide range of topics, including education, the formation of virtues, and marriage enrichment. Annamarie is thrilled and humbled to be the first Head of School at Magnolia School.
The Magnolia School is an independent K-8 school for girls located in Houston, Texas. The school has reimagined the core curriculum. The students are introduced to Latin and focus on developing logic and leadership skills. The school also deemphasizes technology and introduces hands-on activities as well as "outdoor time". To assist the students with success and resiliency the school has cross-grade mentoring.

Peter B. Cotton: When Fred the Snake and Friends Learn the Chinese Zodiac and the Great Race! This is episode 802 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Dr. Peter B. Cotton is the author and creator of an award-winning children’s book series, Fred the Snake, which now consists of 10 books.
He grew up in England, where the first tale was conceived long ago as a bedtime story for his then young children about how (not) to cross the road. When they had their kids, they asked what happened to “Fred-Fred”. Peter teamed up with a special illustrator (Canadian Bonnie Lemaire) and published the first book, When Fred the Snake got Squished and Mended.
Before becoming a great grandfather and celebrated children’s book author, he saved lives as a leading gastroenterologist. His illustrious, international, five-decade career in medicine included treating royalty and celebrity patients, teaching, writing nearly 1,000 published medical papers, penning 10 medical books, and lecturing in over 50 nations and across the United States. He has written the definitive textbook, now in its eighth edition, Cotton and Williams’ Practical Gastrointestinal Endoscopy: The Fundamentals.
He also recently published his memoir, The Tunnel at the End of the Light. Schooled by Quakers, he used to tag along with his dad, a doctor, on farmhouse calls. He received his pilot license and gliding certificate in his youth. He played junior tennis at Wimbledon and got to caddie for his son who twice competed at the British Golf Open.
Dr. Cotton, 85, and his wife, Marion, are blessed with four children, eight grandchildren and four great grand kids. They reside near Charleston, SC, on Dewees Island, an eco-sensitive community of 72 homes, without any cars or shops.

Formative Assessment, Part 3 - 3 Reasons Why You Need to Include Formative Assessment in Your Lesson Plans. This is episode 800 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast.
Steve shares three stories from when he was in 8th and 7th grade. The three stories -The Accident, The Beach, and The Jacket - will hopefully help you think about what distracts your students during your classroom instruction. Steve was focused on everything but the lessons by situations, the sights, sounds, and aromas from the school, as well as interactions with other students. These stories are focused on showing why you want to take time to discover whether the students are following you or not. You have to check for understanding. It is important to use formative assessment.
Formative Assessment is for determining what your students know and don't know. It is purposefully placed in your lesson plans. The type of formative assessment chosen is also determined ahead of time and placed in your lessons. The data gathered is used to make adjustments to your instruction. Additionally, the assessments are not graded.
Help your students be successful. Use formative assessment to make a difference.
