Just where does your podcast fit into your marketing strategy? While there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to marketing your business, I do have strong opinions on what the best way to go about it is if you, like me, prefer to spend more of your time working on your business instead of marketing it. I know, strong opinions? Me? Shocker right? So in this post I’m going to be sharing my approach to content marketing, where a podcast fits into that, and what the benefits are of following my lead.
I’m talking:
- What goes into content marketing
- The three platform types you need for success
- Putting together your content marketing strategy
- Strategic content marketing topics

The biggest challenge I see my clients facing is figuring out how to market their business without the marketing turning into a full time job all on its own. Content marketing is a Big Deal, but it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Throw video into the mix and things can become … demanding, which is why I’m sharing my thoughts on what is essentially audio vs video.
I’m talking:
- Why everyone says video is so important
- Why long form video isn’t actually important
- The benefits (and joys) of audio content
- Balancing your content formats for greater success

So I accidentally took 3 months off from everything except client work without telling anyone Taking time off when needed is something I believe in big time, just disappearing isn’t. So for that, I apologise. But it lit a fire under my arse for this episode because there’s ways I think a break, planned or unplanned, should be handled and I failed to do any of it. Hindsight (and learning) is 20/20.
I’m talking:
- incentivising your return to podcasting
- managing expectations
- apologising taking a break

We don’t have any stats on the structure of business podcasts, at least none that I could find after an exhaustive two minute Google search, so I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that 86.3% of all business podcasts use the interview format. I mean, don’t take my word for it because I just pulled that number out of thin air , but it feels like you can’t scroll through a podcast directory without falling over interview shows.
If you’re new to podcasting and are wondering what format to use for yours, it can be easy to follow the crowd because they must know something you don’t, right? So in this post I’m walking you through how to pick the best format for your podcast so that by the end you’ll be able to confidently choose what format, or formats, you’re going to use for your show that’ll help with your business.
I’m talking:
- What exactly is a podcast format
- The three podcast formats I recommend for business owners
- How the Interview format really gets you results
- When you want to take advantage of the Solo format
- How the Co-Hosted format makes your audience feel about you

Quit worrying so much about your podcast’s intro music and start thinking about these 5 things instead, because if you can’t bake why you do what you do and how you do it differently from everyone else in your market into your business podcast, especially if they’re charging less than you, then we need to press pause and figure it out. Whether you’re new to podcasting and trying to build authority, or you’re going through a bit of a show refresh, keep listening for my five tips for creating a bingeable business podcast.
I’m talking:
- What a is business podcast
- Know what you want your podcast to do for you
- Get really clear on who you’re talking to
- Being okay with it taking a lot of time
- Content and content marketing are not the same thing
- Define your podcast’s USP

It’s easy to feel like you’ve missed the boat on a content format when so many other people have already beaten you to it. The question that’s crossed the mind of every single podcaster out there, whether you’re using your podcast to drive sales in your business or you’re just podcasting for fun: are download numbers really that important? Podcasting takes time and effort, and regardless of the financial reward we may expect or not, we all want to feel validated in our efforts. So I want to chat about this, because if you haven’t already had this come up for you and your podcast, it’s probably only a matter of time.
I’m talking:
- What a download really is
- Why downloads aren’t a great success metric for business podcasts
- What metrics to track for your podcast

Some things in life, like podcasting, should be an easy yes. I don’t know about you, but I’m extremely good at putting problems in my own way so when it came to creating Podette, I worked really hard to make sure it would be easy. The mini format has been the single reason I’m still podcasting and have reached 40+ episodes. Today, I wanted to share all the reasons I chose the bitesize format in the hope of convincing you that it’s a viable option for you too.
I’m talking:
- Why mini episodes work for my personality
- How the bitesize format has changed my approach to podcasting
- The surprise benefit of bitesize episodes I didn’t know about

Obviously, I’m a bit biased, but I think the solo episode podcast format is the most powerful format a business owner can choose. Ooh, how’s that for throwing down the gauntlet right out of the gate? It seems only fair to cover this format after I stomped all over the interview format in my heaviest shoes the other week and I’ll be sharing what’s not so great about monologuing too, don’t worry. But the solo format? When it comes to building relationships, hands down my fave.
I’m talking:
- Why solo episodes work so well
- How often you should be including solo episodes
- Why solo episodes feel so difficult (and how to manage them)
- A simple solo episode framework you can use

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again: one of the biggest myths around podcasting for business is the idea that if you record it, they will come. And as much as I love this idea, it’s not actually true. People won’t follow where you won’t lead, so if you’re not signposting the way to your content then you can’t be shocked when no one listens. Which is why you need to be creating written content via a blog on your website for every single episode you release, even though it may feel like an unnecessary amount of work to do so.
I’m talking:
- The real reason you need a blog for your podcast
- The percentage of traffic my site gets via organic Google searches
- How your blog can help more people than you think
- How to make it easier to create that written content

Controversial opinion alert: your business podcast needs to have a dedicated web page or website and no I don’t mean using one of the third party offerings to build it for you. If the whole point of having your podcast is to grow your business, it needs to be linked to your business and it needs to include all the pieces required to convert someone into a podcast listener. To help you, I’m sharing the 12 sections your podcast landing page must contain to help it do its job: get you more listeners.
I’m talking:
- Why a podcast website is necessary for a business podcast
- The 11 sections your podcast website needs
- The optional section you can use to help your business
- How messaging and copy drives layout

What has all the jobs to do and only 3 sentences to do it in? Your podcast bio, that’s what! In my line of work as a podcast editor, I’ve heard dozens and dozens of guest bios read out by hosts and 99.9% of the time? It becomes very obvious, very quickly, who’s written their bio with no real understanding of a podcast bio’s job. That’s why I’m giving you the lowdown on what makes a good podcast bio so that you can confidently hand that puppy over to the host of a show you’re being interviewed on and know you’ve done everything you can to secure new listeners and leads for your own podcast.
I’m talking:
- The difference between a podcast bio and any other kind
- Why putting the work into your bio pays off
- The one question you need to be asking for a kickass podcast bio

If you’re looking to grow your reach beyond your own sphere of influence, I’m a big fan of the podcast interview as a way to do it. Having someone’s voice in your earbuds can make you feel like you’re really getting to know a person, and if that voice is providing value as well? Well, win win, congrats you’ve just made it into someone’s regular playlist. But if only it was that easy to score yourself an interview on another podcaster’s show. It’s not always straightforward and smooth sailing, especially if you’re cold pitching someone you don’t know. But landing these interviews can be greatly helped by creating a one sheet and by the end of this episode, you’re going to know all the pieces to include in your own.
I'm talking:
- How a One Sheet can help you land podcast interviews on other shows
- The six must-have sections to your One Sheet
- How to make it easy for podcast hosts to agree to interview you

The end of 2021 is fast approaching and if you haven’t already started thinking about your content plan for 2022 then consider this your friendly reminder to get your butt in gear. I know not everyone’s as into planning as me, but by the end of this episode you should have some solid ideas of how you can use my process to help with your content so it’s quicker and more conversion optimised to produce. I’m all in on the planning; there’s colour coding, a project management system, multiple tools, and post-it notes included in my process, not to mention the key components I learned from working in the professional television industry and you can learn all of it right here.
I’m talking:
- How to manage all your ideas
- The tools I use to manage, plan and schedule my content planning
- The importance of scheduling
- The questions to ask yourself to make sure your content will help your business and your audience
- How using a template can help speed up your content planning process even if you’re not a scripter

The biggest myth in podcasting for online business is this idea that just having a podcast will help your business grow. Or, to put it another way, if you record it, they will listen. And as much as I’d dearly love for this to be true, that is unfortunately a big fat lie. And when you’re struggling to get your episodes created or seeing falling listener numbers, it can be really hard to keep pushing forwards. If this is you right now, I want you to know this one’s for you and share how to do a podcast audit so you can turn your frown upside down.
I’m talking:
-The goal of a podcast audit
- The different types of podcast audit you can do
- A quick podcast production audit you can perform
- A quick podcast marketing audit you can perform
- 5 questions to ask in every podcast audit you do
