Being a leader is hard. That's why we all need experts in organizational culture to guide us in stepping into leadership roles effectively. Maggie Larkin Hicok is 👏 that 👏coach 👏. She's smart, compassionate, and a goofball, qualities that make her excellent at her job and enable her to provide valuable perspective to the leaders and teams she works with. We cover a wide range of topics, from how to connect with people virtually, to exercising influence without formal authority, and why embracing your authentic self is the key to answering life's most important questions.
We have the power to create our own worlds. The books we read and the art we see allow us to create an entire world within our imaginations. Sometimes, those worlds inspire us; sometimes, they protect us; sometimes, they remind us there is so much more out there, and sometimes, they embolden us. Shubnum Khan has used her writing and her art to create new worlds and to shed light on the happenings of our own world. In this episode, we discuss how reading, travel, and art go hand in hand, and how it’s perfectly okay to be the black sheep as long as you are following your heart and honoring your soul.
Meditation has gone mainstream and yet so many of us aren’t using this tool to our advantage. Kelli Heald found meditation after tragedy and credits meditation for healing her and supporting her through finding her new life. Now she’s on a mission to make sure meditation is accessible and simplified for everyone.
Humans are living longer than ever. Our average lifespan has increased from 47 in the 1950s to 80 for women today. That’s a significant difference and predates the incorporation of many of the medical and technological advancements we are experiencing today. While we are indeed living longer, what isn't changing at the same pace is society’s perception of aging. The Red Hat Society, led by Debra Granich, is on a mission to redefine what it means to be over 50, 60, 70, 80, and beyond. Granich is altering how women over 50 perceive themselves and collaborating with Hollywood, major brands, and beyond to recognize the substantial potential that wise women offer.
We live in a culture that tells people, women in particular, to doubt their instincts and intuition from a very early age. From our cultural response of "I'm fine" when we are not, to being told that adults or experts know best when they often do not, we're told to turn off and stop listening to our internal knowledge. However, when you ask successful and influential people about their journey, as we do on the Powerful Ladies Podcast, the overwhelming response is that there was a pivot point at which they started listening and trusting themselves. We want to bridge the gap and share with you the tools to trust yourself now so that you can be in your full power. To do that we've brought together four amazing female panelists who have done brave things, trusted themselves and are actively building a powerful life on their terms. Our guest panelist are: Cyann Ribeiro - Actress & Author, @mscyann Natalia Trejos - TV Producer, Actress & Author, @nataliatrejos_  Shadi Sadeghi - Certified Jungian Coach & Emotion Code Practitioner, @thislifefulfilled Sierra Katow - Comedian & TV Writer, @sierrakatow  This is a live recording hosted by Soho Works, Powerful Ladies & Kara Duffy in celebration of International Women's Month. Moderated by Powerful Ladies founder and podcast host Kara Duffy featuring four amazing female panelists.
If you’re looking for a breakthrough in sales and want to transition from being afraid to sell to being excited to sell, this is the episode for you. Natasha Hemmingway is a master sales coach, teaching people how to sell from their heart and have a true connection with their product or service, their target audience, and the underlying significance of it all. In this episode, we cover a lot, so get your notebook and pen out because you’re going to want to take notes!
Living in alignment with yourself starts with listening and having trust. Then, you're freed up to follow your passions, responding to what calls to you and allowing the universe to guide you. Leia Viat Marasovich has worked as an advocate, storyteller, photographer, and videographer, bringing all her passions together. You've witnessed her contributions in supporting well-known thought leaders such as Dr. Zach Bush, Rich Roll, and Julia Piatt. We cover everything from self trust to international adventures and even how your dream career can surprise you. This is one of my favorite conversations and episodes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Everyone wants to do good, make a positive impact, and help people; it's core to our DNA as humans. Often, as entrepreneurs, we start down one path to fulfill this purpose only to realize that we can make that same impact in so many ways. Shennice Cleckley knew she wanted to feed people. She started as a baker and dessert entrepreneur; now, she's feeding people with words, inspiration, and teaching them how to find self-worth and abundance.
So many of us have dreamed of having a boutique shop. Today’s guest, Stephani Clymer, had that dream too and has proven that a classic brick-and-mortar independent retail shop can thrive in today’s digital shopping age. In this episode, we discuss pivoting to follow your dreams and staying in alignment with yourself, how to create a great team, and why communities and customer service go hand in hand.
How do we only work on projects we love? How do we find time for everything that matters to us? How do we avoid getting overwhelmed by the state of things? I begin by seeking advice from someone whose accomplishments seem to span multiple individuals or lifetimes, yet who remains simultaneously happy and vivacious.  That person is our esteemed guest on today’s new Powerful Ladies Podcast, Dr. Tierney Thys. She’s a marine biologist, National Geographic explorer, filmmaker, marathon runner, activist, and co-founder of Around the World in 80 Fabrics. In this episode we dive into how she has accomplished so much, what motivates her, how she stays centered and what actions she wishes everyone would take.
I’ve been lucky to work with some incredible people, particularly some incredible women, and Michelle Smith is one of those women. It was inspiring to work alongside her at one of our past companies because we were in flow. We were making the important happen and the unimportant go away, and doing our best to make the lives of our team members easier. Plus, it was fun! Crazy idea in corporate life. Since we’ve both gone our separate ways, it doesn’t surprise me at all that Michelle has launched Michelle Smith Coaching to support professional women find success and work-life balance. In this episode, we dive into all the ways that there is still room for equality, why women still need extra support to thrive (despite 2023 being a record for women in business), and why there is so much room for all of us to support each other.
Like many areas of life today, there are a lot of opinions about how to be the best parent and how to best take care of yourself as a parent. It’s overwhelming. Kristine Petterson has always cared about taking care of the world around her. When she became a parent herself, she realized that there was so much opportunity to give parents peace of mind while nourishing themselves and their babies. That’s why she created Mindful Parenting Evolution, a place where exhausted parents can work with a sleep consultant, learn healthy boundaries, and focus more on enjoying the journey of parenting. In this episode, we cover everything from healthy best practices for new parents, making big impacts in your local community, why you should give up wanting to lose weight to get your energy back, and how to feel good about putting yourself first.
We all want and crave peace. Peace comes from transformation, and the only way to achieve true transformation is to navigate through our emotions, exploring the darker aspects of ourselves and embracing our shadows. Shadi Sadeghi, a Jungian coach and Emotion Code practitioner, skillfully guides clients through this process. Essentially, she holds your hand as you journey through your darkness to reach your brightest light. In this episode, she breaks down the Jungian approach, what we are truly here to experience, and explores what is truly possible. Are you ready to awaken to your power?
Louisa Schmolke broke into the international art scene thanks to her 1.6x1.6m Grid of Memories artwork entitled '3024' featured in the Royal Scottish Academy 197th Annual Show. Like many artists, she’s been working hard for a long time building her craft and following her own winding way. From architecture school to working full time to covid derailing her plans to move to the US, she’s been boldly trusting herself in choosing her next step. Unlike many artists, she’s using the practical skills from her architecture training to blend creating art that inspires her. She leads by thinking about how the audience will interact and receive each piece. Her winning formula is creating recognition across many creative spaces, a strong social media following, and new doors that keep opening for her.
There are people you meet and you instantly know they are someone you are drawn to meet, know and learn about. Anne Watson is one of those people for me. After meeting her briefly at a wine tasting event, I instantly knew I had to have her on the podcast and this episode is simply delightful. She’s a gentle force of energy with such a welcoming spirit. She’s been stepping into a new phase of her journey, sharing what she’s learned from losing her husband to cancer, being a single mom supporting her son’s passion for music, and running three businesses on top of all the feelings, changes and newness. I’m so excited for you to meet her and experience a bit of her wisdom. Enjoy!
There are so many ways to live life. Some parts are within your control, while others are beyond your influence. Today’s guest, Melissa Cho, is bravely navigating the path of life and pursuing what resonates with her. After working for established media brands, she has transitioned to freelance work, taking on various roles and creating passion projects such as her podcast, HAAPI Hour. These endeavors have opened doors she never could have imagined. Is it easy? Hell no, but she is growing wiser and funnier along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting her, our conversation, and I can't wait for you to hear it too.
Running our own business can be overwhelming in so many ways. The key to transitioning from surviving to thriving is to switch from prioritizing others to prioritizing yourself. In this episode, I sit down with Alyson Campbell, the founder of Heart & Soul PR based in Los Angeles. We talk about how to choose dream clients, the importance of prioritizing yourself, and how to build a business that keeps your heart and soul front and center.
Sunny Bates is a prime example of building a business around your zone of genius. Sunny’s zone of genius revolves around collecting, connecting and cultivating extraordinary people and relationships. When an organization committed to success and new ideas that can change the world is in the process of building their teams, they call Sunny. She’s a founder, entrepreneur, advisor, and author, and we would love to take a peek at her rolodex. In this conversation, we talk about hiring strategies, how to build networks that are both powerful and satisfying to you, and how one of her secrets is listening for what people really want vs what they say they want.
"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened." Truth! As avid animal lovers here at Powerful Ladies, we were excited to have the animal and veterinary TikTok educator and influencer, Dr. Molly Brinkmann, join us for our latest episode. We discuss how she became a vet, what pet owners are doing wrong, and how she and her staff are handling her newfound TikTok fame.
There are so many opportunities to change the world and make a positive impact and it all starts with being curious about the people and the world around you. Jean Oelwang is proof.  As the president of Virgin Unite she’s leading the charitable arm of the Virgin empire, while also co-founding Plus Wonder and author of the book Partnering. Jean knows the coolest people, studies those who are making an impact, and brings people together with shared purpose and commitment to leave the planet a better place. In this episode, we talk about the power of partnerships, the importance of curiosity, and how a meandering life is perhaps even more purposeful than a well planned life.
