Description

The Buck Fifty is the funding machine that helps support 15 local high school chapters of Drug Free Clubs of America. This program has changed the culture in these schools as over 50% of these teens have volunteered to join and committed to living a drug free lifestyle. This 150-mile relay monster takes teams of 10 or 5 runners through four state/national parks, backcountry roads, and historic Chillicothe, Ohio. These are the inspirational stories behind the race and cause we've gathered since 2015.

Christine was baptised a Buck Fifty Runner in 2018, the second year of our race, and has been with us ever since. She is also one tough runner, as she tackles Leg #26 every year, which is one of the most underrated Legs of the course. This six-mile soul-taker has more hills than you can shake a stick at. She's also been a team captain the last four years for two teams in the race called R.I.O.T. for running is our theropy!!!
Our race director, Dave Huggins, goes over the 5-person team category and how they operate differently than our typical 10-person teams. Prior preparation prevents poor performance.
We are grateful to have great people in The Buck Fifty. Tim and Sabrina Gardner are about as good as they get in our book. Tim has been on The Buck Fifty Board for a few years, serves as our treasurer, and has been a Buck Fifty Runner with his wife Sabrina since year two in 2018.  Sabrina gives us some great advice and description for Runner #5, and how to stay healthy.
We talk with Chris Stangle, founder of RunFluent, and Buck Fifty Champion. He's an Ohio native but he's living his dream life in Florida, coaching athletes around the country. He is the race director for six races during the year, four held in Chillicothe, Ohio.
We chat it up with Michelle Collins, who went from M.A.D.E. supporter to Buck Fifty Volunteer and now holds the title of 4-time Buck Fifty Runner!!! She is the The Team Captain for Not Fast Just Furious, and has accomplished so much in her late life move to become a runner.
The partnership developing with Chillicothe Correctional Institution over the past two years has been more than remarkable. Yes, The Buck Fifty was established to fund high school chapters of the evidence-based Drug Free Clubs of America program. Yes, The Buck Fifty is helping people get in shape and stay fit through running. And Yes, these inmates have worked and found a way to do great things for youth in Southern Ohio. Listen to hosts William Presson, and Dave Huggins engage with Chris Scott, and Greg Manson talk about their Buck Ten experience.
We dive into the runner experience for Runners in the third running position for The Buck Fifty with Greg Manson. Greg started running in our race in the inaugural 2017 event, and then was our first hire to help race director Dave Huggins in 2022. We took him out of the running position, but not off the course as Greg is a major asset to all that goes on race weekend. He helps prepare the course and you can propabaly hear in his voice that he has a great time doing it.
As we move through The Buck Fifty course, we want to highlight each runner and what it looks like to run The Buck Fifty Course. Today, we talk with Will Frizzell, who has run in every Buck Fifty since 2017 and has been Runner #2 multiple times.  He has also been on The Buck Fifty Board, which is a 501c3 non-profit organization.
William and Dave had the pleasure of talking with Jodi Bennett, who has registered for every Buck Fifty Race since the inaugural year in April 2017. Jodi has run many different runner positions but has been Runner #1 several times. She talks about that experience running Legs #1, #11, and #21. Jodi also works with Another Chance Ministries, which is doing amazing work with those in recovery.  If you are seeking help to get into recovery, please reach out to Tim Stacy at Another Chance Ministries. 740-573-7005.
We welcome Julia and Keanon Montgomery, who established one of the most prominent and hottest running clubs in Ross County, Ohio. Learn why they started this group and all the different facets of running they include on a weakly basis.
Each team will submit their projected pace time for all 30 legs of the race. We explain how to do this, and give some encouraging words to all runners to help us establish our starting times.
We are back in our new studio recording Running Off at The Mouth. This podcast is dedicated to running The Buck Fifty Relay Race, and we plan to bring you all the information you need for a successful adventure.
Michael talks about running and how it helped with his addiction, Buckfifty stories from its inception, and we talk snacks without our co-host, Chris Scott, while he eats a Speedway peanut butter bar on the beach.
Michael Hickman is the epitome of why we started The Buckfifty. After a lifetime of struggling with addiction and substance use, Michael found sobriety. He also found running. Then The Buckfifty found him. He has ran every year of the event.  This episode Michael talks about his struggles with addiction, understanding the addictive mindset and how poweful it is, factors that lead to addiction, and most importantly where to find help.
Ultrarunner Kelly O'Dell joined the show to discuss her experience with The Buckfifty, running tips, and upcoming races on her schedule. Kelly ran on the 5-person team, the Badwater Bunch, named after arguably the hardest ultra-marathon on the planet, which all of the team members have run or will run (or won in Harvey Lewis' case).  Besides eating a little "crow" when she has to tell Dave that she didn't think the race would work when she first heard about it, Kelly discusses her team's strategy, running for beginners, her own challenges that came with running, and her overall Buckfifty experience from a first-timer perspective.
Smitty, Chris Scott & Dave Huggins sat down to discuss what they all witnessed during the 2021 Buck Fifty Relay on April 16th & 17th 2021.
We had such a great show going with Chris Stangle that we had to create two shows.  Keep listening, learning, and subscribing to all things Buck Fifty and RunFluent!!!
Chris is the founder of Don't Just Run RunFluent and we are thankful to have his expertise in creating The Buck Fifty Training Guide for this year's race.  Listen in as he gives us a ton of advice as we prepare for The Buck Fifty this week.
Justin was an original Buck Fifty runner and has also participated in the event as a van driver.  Justin has also been a Buck Fifty Team Captain so he knows a lot about the cat wrangling or leadership experience.
In this episode of Running Off at The Mouth, we hang out with our friend Jarrod DePugh.  Jarrod has been around The Buck Fifty since the beginning and is a four-time driver in the event.  He gives us a great perspective on what it is like to be behind the wheel, and why he loves the event.  One of the best moments so far in Running Off at The Mouth is listening to host Chris Scott describe one of his favorite snacks.
