Description

Welcome to the Hero's Blade Vibe Check, where we talk about Commander/Elder Dragon Highlander & Magic. We chat about recent & future events, games & deck brews, new cards, articles & gameplay videos, & if your Commander passes the Vibe Check! (also, pop culture media that we've been dabbling in).

We're Cole (he/him, @TheBloodricGuy on Bluesky, editor) & Empress Quinn (fae/faer, @girldickenergy on Bluesky, composer), joining forces to chat about things we love & adore in Magic the Gathering. Let's hang out & enjoy the vibes.

Middle-Earth is chock full of legendary creatures, characters of all shapes and sizes, so we begin to breakdown the 40 legendary creatures of the Uncommon variety, looking at the Elves, Dwarf, humans of Rohan and Gondor. We discuss stats, lore, and if they're good as a commander or part of the 99. Due to the density, part 2 will be next week's episode! You can find Derek on Twitter @genesiswavefor1.
Blink and you'll miss it: this tiny goblin was actually a dragon the whole time. Who'd have thought? Magic is so wild and random like that. Also we've never played a commander game in our lives. Don't trust what we say. Fitz returns with his Izzet polymorph deck that's gone through some commanders before settling on Rograkh and Esior, getting value from changing low mana value creatures for banger and threatening flyers. Also, who's ready for the crossover commander game of the year: Rick, Steadfast Leader vs Megatron, Tryant vs Gandalf the Grey vs Chun-Li, Countless Kicks? Universes Beyond has opened the gate of many possibilities. Go check out Fitz on Twitter, Casual 7's episode about cardboard fixation on Podcasters on Spotify, and his Roger/Esior deck on Archidekt.
Who knew that the Path of the Kensei lead to having creatures Blink in and out of existence? Is it possible to learn this power? Lenny, aka Ajani's Gay Pridemate, joins me again to discuss Oji, how constant value can lead to unfun play patterns for all involved, and how white-blue is an undervalued aggro color combination. We also talk about how when people say cards are bad, our response is "I'll have a deck on your desk tomorrow morning". Also, JoJo posing? Check out Lenny on Twitter, the Scrap Trawlers on Twitch, and Power Sink on EDHREC.
Look, it's tiny baby boy Mishra digging in the sand, combing the desert, building silly constructs. I hope he doesn't become an absolute monster in his adult life. MJ of the MTG in Quarantine podcast and I show our homework of how pretty good mono-red Mishra is in terms of digging through your library, sifting through your graveyard and getting that burst of mana needed to create your next machine monster. Then we chat about his CEDH list that he's brewed up to have a good time in the highest tier of play. This legend will make you find what Dark Helmet is looking for. (You know, Spaceballs? Anyone remember that?) Check out MJ over on Twitter, and check out our lists on Moxfield, my casual list, and MJ's casual and fringe CEDH list.
You're looking for value in this game of Commander. A crime lord from the Undercity offers you an opportunity, you just have to make the journey. Hope you don't mind the plane-hopping along the way. Emmara, the GoddessofBlunder brings the elusive and mini-game making powers of Rilsa Rael together with the enthusiasm and passion for Planechase, finally getting a return to mark the occasion of March of the Machines! We share our thoughts on our respective builds, what makes Initiative and Monarch together amazing, and our thoughts on Planechase as a whole, as well as the new effects brought to the commander table. Also, "Chaos ensues" is a great gaming term. Check out Emmara on Twitter and Twitch, and check out her Rilsa Rael deck on Moxfield.
Hey, it's been a while. I've missed you all. Ą̸̲͈̠͆̔͑͝l̴̡̧͈̞̀̏ľ̵͎̹̇ ̵̥̙͚͉̿̽͝Ẃ̸͓̈́̕͝í̶̯̚l̵̬͎͑̂͝l̷͇̇ ̴̯̦͛̾̿b̷͈̆́̈́̓ḛ̴̃͗̚ ̵̧̚O̵̹̺͆͌͜n̶̹̗͎̝͠ȩ̵͉̭͍̍̎̍ ̴͈̯̽a̵̳͖͋̕ģ̵͕̤̄͌ả̵̩̥͔̪i̶̪͋̆̉͜n̶̪̦̅̈́̂͠ Oh and hey, season 3! Thanks to Fitz and Gabe for the new intro! The Queen of Cardboard returns to discuss the potential upgrades from recent Magic sets, like from All Will Be One! Beth and I run through new additions you can make to your own Fynn, the Fangbearer deck, and the many things we can look forward to in the upcoming sets, March of the Machines, Wilds of Eldraine and Lord of the Rings! There's a lot to get caught up on! Including Oathbreaker? This news is making me sweat a little.... Go check out Beth on Twitter, and on Twitch! You can find the Fynn budget deck and Beth's Vraska Oathbreaker deck over on Moxfield. (Please go check out the MTG Lexicon stream this Saturday, April 1 over at https://www.twitch.tv/mtg_lexicon! We're celebrating their 7 year anniversary)
Two adult men talk about Pokemon. It goes about as well as you expect. Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon.  That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled trainers  should try to win with their favorites. I like your style. You  understand what's important. Previous guest John joins me in rambling about Pokemon, going on tangents about Pokemon, and getting emotional about Pokemon. Pokemon's been going on for about as long as Magic, and has its fair share of broken mechanics, competitive and casual perspectives, and history that's affected a lot of people around the world. So come join this ride down memory lane when the next pair of games are around the corner! Check out John over on Twitter @Darkhawkeye007.
"It is the year 0079 of the Universal Century. A half-century has passed since Earth began moving its burgeoning population into gigantic orbiting space colonies. A new home for mankind, where people are born and raised. And die." And where space colonies are dropped on Australia. Oof. I'm joined by my friend Gabe, aka ICETEP, where we chat about our love for the multimedia franchise Mobile Suit Gundam! We chat about how we were introduced, the recently released Gundam Witch From Mercury, what makes a Gundam show, what is a Gundam, and also mention the numerous war crimes that are committed throughout the series history. Wow, cool robot! Go check out Gabe on Twitter at @ICETEP, and his Linktree, where his links for his music is.
Let's change the tempo a bit! Today I bring on my long time friend Alex on for a little bit of Magic, but a ton of Transformers lore! Alex and I discuss the 15 Brothers War: Transformers cards being released in the near future, if their colour identities make any sense to Alex, and the absolute depth of stories many people (myself included!) have no idea that they're missing when it comes to this absolutely monumental franchise. More than meets the eye indeed! Welcome to Unconventional Episode 1, where we're gonna have conversations that are loosely tied to MTG, and branch out to other media, whether that be Magic related or not. I hope you enjoy this change of scenery.  Please support the podcast in your own way by checking out my Ko-Fi page! It's really appreciated and gives me some flexibility on what I can do with my content.
Sometimes you make a deck, and the you got your pile of cuts. And then you make a deck with those, and you still got a bunch of cuts left. What else is a Commander player to do? Nick, AKA G3 from MTG Lexicon comes on to talk about his Elf themed deck with Numa and Nadier from Commander Legends 1, how he simplified the deck's play patterns with self imposed restrictions, and our observations of Magic and Commander after playing Commander for over a decade. Check out G3's Numa and Nadier Deck on Moxfield! Please go check out MTG Lexicon over on Twitter, Twitch, Youtube and their Linktree! It's soon gonna be their 7 year anniversary, I adore what they do and have had a lot of fun games with the crew.
If a printed Attraction has a regular holofoil, but the one of Scryfall has the nut holofoil, which one is the legal one? Prophet from the Casuals 7's podcast is here to chat about Unfinity's very own Dee Kay (which I always mix up as either Kay Dee or Day Kee? dunno why). We discuss rolling dice, rolling out Attractions, if Unfinity is the set for us, and did Unfinity ruin Magic again for the 40th time this year? Listen and find out. Check out Prophet on Twitter @MtgProphet, and check out Casual 7's with his cohost MrFitzyfitz over on Twitter @Casual7spodcast, on Anchor and on Spotify. Finally, check out Prophet's Dee Kay list on Moxfield. If you'd like to support the show, head on over to https://ko-fi.com/eclipsemeteor and pay for a Tim Horton's French Vanilla!
So Liliana and Elspeth kill the Phyrexians and Nicol Bolas and then they kiss. The end....? I am joined by the Praetor's for Charity leads: Light, Eliana and Alice for a bonkers episode! We take a look at the Phyrexian legends of the set, sprinkled with some extra cards by association, discuss the list of viable Phyrexian legends for their charity events, and then descend into absolute craven behaviour of guesses for Magic the Gathering's future stories...and self indulgence. Hey Sheoldred, what that mouth do? Please support and go check out the following links for each guest on today's episode over at Twitter: - Light can be found @ThePhiRexian - Eliana can be found on @defiantnecro - Alice can be found on @MissBunFee - @Praetor4Charity. Events are in the near future, and links will be updated!
If you wanna support me and the show, head on over to my Ko-Fi to buy me a Tim's French Vanilla. Or some new uncommon legends! Familiars are there to help their wizard with their magic, but this nasty little kitty's got a mean streak. We got a lot to do to earn her trust, she'll lead us to victory. Joel aka Enthralimund from Squelch! Another Hearthstone Podcast and fellow MTG Lexicon community member joins me today to talk about his two Falthis partner decks, the Jund Slimefoot secret commander deck and Grixis-Get-F@cky, what this trusty partner does for his games, talks about the Mythic partners and his love of Izzet Ludevic, and how Magic's artwork has been a big reason we play. I like cats, in case you couldn't tell. Go check out Joel over on Twitter @enthralimund1, and his Falthis/Tana Slimefoot deck and Falthis/Ludevic Get Shwifty deck over on Moxfield. If you're into Hearthstone, go check out Squelch on Squelchcast.com!
If you'd like to support the show, head on over to https://ko-fi.com/eclipsemeteor and pay for a Tim Horton's French Vanilla! The artwork for this episode was made by GoldSabertooth, go check them out at @GSabetooth on Twitter. For such a seemingly nice and optimistic character of New Capenna, Queza's ability really doesn't indicate that at all. Wonder what the angels would think of her... Fitz returns to gush more about his quintessential commander card, that has a payoff for his favorite ability in Magic: drawing cards! And of course, talking about recent events, we look a little into the complete decks of the Warhammer 40k Precons, which are pretty spicy. We top it off with the history of Wizards of the Coast's venturing into other franchises with Secret Lairs and current and future Universes Beyond products, and how we feel about it overall. You can find Fitz on Twitter @mrfitzyfitz, and his stream Arena of the Ancients over on Twitch. His new podcast with our friend Prophet is out now, please go check out Casual 7's, over on Twitter @Casual7spodcast, and over on Anchor and Spotify. Check out my Queza list at Moxfield, and Fitz's on Archidekt!
I've also made a Ko-Fi! If you enjoy the content, or would like to support the show, head on over to https://ko-fi.com/eclipsemeteor Time has been favourable to the Younger, no longer tapping out to just deal 2 damage. Tetsuo Umezawa has seen the fruit of his training, now he's here for all out war! Jim Lapage (from The Spike Feeders and recently added the Rules Committee!) is here to talk about his recently made but very cool Obosh Companion deck , only made of 1 mana value spells. We discuss his recent findings with the deck, the reason for his choices, the under and over performers, and then discuss how we, as individuals, can find ways to build for ourselves and others! Check out Jim on Twitter @JimTSF and the Spike Feeders on Youtube! Check out Jim's Tor/Obosh 1s deck over on Moxfield.
There was some bug fixes and tweaks, but this elven cleric is back for ROUND 2! We got Joseph Johnson in the house! This episode we talk his Trelasarra deck, the goals and strategies, and what he enjoys about it. We then discuss recent Magic conventions and events, his experience with the FGC (Fighting Game Community), what it means to be an inspiration to others like himself, and then talk about the issues of our beloved community, and communities at large. Racial and gender injustices continue to happen in Magic's community, and in other gaming spaces. My goal as a host is to have people come in and be themselves. Joseph opened up a bit, and this is the first time on the show such heavy topics of human rights and personal experiences have been discussed at length. I want people to know that it can and most likely will happen again. I want you to be an attentive listener of my guests and what they have to say, whether it's just about games, or even the more real discussions of every day life. I've had a colourful array of guests of different walks of life, and I will continue to be a host for them and others. If you don't like that....well..... Please go check out Joseph's stuff: His Twitter @Blackneto_, Tabletop Jocks @tabletopjocks, and his Linktree. Check out his Trelasarra list over on Moxfield.
You better keep your arrangement with the Magpie, or she'll seal you in silver and gold and make you swim with the fishes.  Marshall, the producer of the MMCast comes on to chat about his Artisan Lagrella deck, we lament the templating of the card, how to utilize her Grasp of Fate+ ability, and then discuss where we should or shouldn't draw lines for Commander subformats such as pauper, CEDH, Artisan and so on. Each has their place, but do we really need to isolate each one? Go check out Marshall's Twitter @doistillloveit, check out the MMCast's Twitter @theMMCast. You can see Artisan Commander gameplay over at Alex Kessler's Twitch, and finally check out Marshall's Artisan Lagrella list on Moxfield.
Dungeons and Dragons allows you to make characters with various backgrounds that have defined their life. In this case, Ganax was raised by faerie dragons in the Feywild. Never knowing any better, he thinks he's just one big faerie dragon himself, bringing his family along to defend his home. Oh no, there's too many dragons! Ben joins the cast to chat the Izzet combo of dragons and treasures, and how you can quickly churn out an army of fliers to control the skies, raining death on all opponents. We then discuss how Backgrounds can really make your commander feel super powerful, coinciding with the reason most of us play commander: the legendary creature that defines our deck. Go check out Ben on Twitter @ben_doolittle, check out his Conditions Allow article on Amber Gristle O'Maul on Commander's Herald. Check out his Ganax and Feywild Vistor deck here at Archidekt.
Hey folks! This weekend, running from July 15th to 17th, go check out the Phyrexians for Uvalde stream hosted at willofthecompleation on Twitch! It's a charity event for the affected families in Uvalde. Check out details of the fundraiser here on @ForestSolRingGo. There's giveaways for this good cause! Each participant is playing a legendary Phyrexian, I'll be playing Urabrask 2.0 on Sunday. The informant of Asmodeus himself roams the Nine Hells as a harmless seller of goods from his Wandering Emporium. However, each trinket he brings has a price to be paid, with blood and your very soul. Derek, my previous guest and one of my friends from my original playgroup braves his early morning in a different timezone to go over his decklist focused on Treasures! We talk about the strategies, card choices, and potential sandbagging and swap outs that match the mood of the table you're playing at. Check out Derek's Mahadi list on Moxfield, and you can engage Judge Derek on his Twitter @genesiswavefor1.
Amassing power, easing entry into the fight, this Loxodon is not here to mess around, and neither are we. Today we have Jen from the FilthyMTGCasuals, where we chat Hamza, cost reduction, plus 1 counters and why we choose commanders like this to build around. Doni jumps in for the second half because it was his birthday, and we love chatting Magic. I ask them questions about their origins to Magic and how we should commemorate occasions by noting what set was released around that time. Go check the FilthyMTGCasuals' Linktree and Jen's Hamza list here on Archidekt.
