F1 Games: Part 1

F1 Games: Part 1

2026-05-1201:48:49

For as long as there have been racing games, there have basically been Formula 1 games. This episode, Adam, Andrew, and Paul explore about 20 years of digital representations of the pinnacle of motorsport, from the early days of Pole Position to the sport's first forays into polygons. We don't cover literally every game, but we talk about an awful lot of them. Join us later for Part 2, where we pick up where we left off here, with the N64. Songs ordered by appearance: "Hockenheim" from F1 Challenge, "Results" from Virtua Racing FlatOut, and "Car Select" from Grand Prix Challenge. Screamer

Screamer

2026-04-2301:27:17

Two years after a surprise debut at The Game Awards, Milestone's anime-inspired reenvisioning of Screamer is here, and the boys each feel some different type of way about it. A narrative-heavy arcade racer oozing ambition with a cohesive art style and unique gameplay, it's the kind of game we at Time Extend always love to support, even if its story is at times nonsensical, and even if it carries a hard learning curve. Will it eventually go down as a classic, or burn up like a shooting star? Songs ordered by appearance: "BonBomb" by Hex Archive, "Arcade" by VGR, and "Can You Keep Up?" by Hex Archive, all from Screamer. Somehow, Genki's Multi Racing Championship has wound up on Time Extend's Mount Rushmore of racing games, and the boys try to once and for all unpack whether or not it's actually a good game. What follows is a random discussion of N64 racers via the Analogue 3D before multiple gaming-related topics that have nothing at all to do with virtually driving cars. We weren't planning for this to be the return of the Free Practice episodes of old, but that's pretty much what happened. If the hosts of Time Extend Revo could design their own racing games, what would they dream up? This is precisely the question asked and answered in this latest special from the mind of Brendan Rorrison, as the boys pitch projects in a round-robin format, drawing upon games of all genres to sell their ideas. From cross-country rallies to good old-fashioned touring car racing and cars that grind, the results are all over the map, with a few surprising similarities. Here's a link to the spreadsheet that lists out all the components of each game concept. (Beware, obvious spoilers if you haven't listened yet!) One-Make Racing Games

One-Make Racing Games

2026-02-1402:17:06

From Automobili Lamborghini to Volvo: Drive for Life, there's a long history of racing games based entirely around a single automaker's products—and in some cases, individual cars. Yeah, plenty of them are forgettable, and some are cynical, bargain-bin cash grabs attempting to lure unsuspecting customers to pay to be advertised to, but there have been a few surprising gems over the years. We run through a whole lot of them in this episode, quality be damned. Excitebikes, Trucks & Bots

Excitebikes, Trucks & Bots

2026-01-2501:28:13

Our first episode back from our 2025 hiatus explores Nintendo's classic arcade racing series all about boosting and big air. What else could you really say links 1984's Excitebike with its N64 sequel, Excite Truck, and especially Excite Bots on the Wii? In any case, they all certainly bring the excitement, and we'll proudly throw this one on the pile of forgotten racing franchises that Nintendo ought to revisit. Probably not before a proper, new mainline F-Zero and Wave Race, though. Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2025

Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2025

2025-03-0101:14:54

We're now some weeks removed from Tokyo Xtreme Racer's successful Steam Early Access launch, but we couldn't just move on without chatting about the game, so that's what this episode is all about. Andrew, Paul, and Adam caught up on what they loved (pretty much everything), what they'd want to see addressed as development continues (really just menu navigation), and the simple joy of revisiting the quirks that made this franchise so great in the first place, in a brand-new title. RalliSport Challenge

RalliSport Challenge

2025-01-2201:12:38

Of the many beloved rally games that don't get made anymore, one short-lived series has a habit of getting overlooked. But if you had an Xbox way back when, you knew how special—and how ahead of its time—Rallisport Challenge was. Time Extend finally gives DICE's classics their due in this episode, just after some quick-and-dirty impressions on the new Tokyo Xtreme Racer (spoiler: it's great) and before Andrew accidentally wins a sealed copy of a game nobody remembers for a penny on Yahoo Auctions Japan. What game? You'll have to listen to find out! Picture it: You're deserted on a tropical island. No idea how you got there, no idea what you'll do, but then you see it: a PSP with five driving/racing games of your choosing on its proprietary storage media. What would you hope to see on that system? That's exactly the question Adam, Andrew, Brend, and Paul answer in this episode. Considering the PSP's all-star library of quality racers, you can be sure no two hosts' picks are the same! Snowboarding Games

Snowboarding Games

2024-05-1001:49:51

Snowboarding was weirdly big in the '90s, wasn't it? The boys pay tribute to this forgotten genre by covering the most—and least—memorable titles that involve that most extreme of extreme sports, from the ones you know like SSX and Amped to oddities like Steep Slope Sliders and Evolution Snowboarding. Technically, we don't talk about every snowboarding game in this almost two-hour pod, but this one might just set a Time Extend record for the number of different games discussed. Even Final Fantasy VII gets a passing mention! The whole Time Extend Revo crew—Adam, Brend, Andrew, and Paul—join forces to talk about the weird and very occasionally wonderful things that happen when games focus entirely around putting one foot in front of the other. From Sonic R to Mirror's Edge, this one's all about the surprising gameplay challenge of trying to steer fast-moving bipedal characters. All our links: https://timeextend.carrd.co/Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/extendti.meEmail: timeextendpodcast@gmail.comAdam's Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/aismail.xyzAndrew's Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/elmore.zoneBrend's Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/brend.bsky.socialPaul's Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/dcarena.bsky.social
The boys have returned from their long hiatus with news about future plans as well as a long overdue conversation about Rocket League and why it still keeps them coming back after eight-plus years. Naturally Rocket Racing is covered as well, which shows glimmers of potential even if it lacks the staying power of Psyonix's modern classic. We know, it's been a minute. But never before has Time Extend packed so much into one hour of a show. First, we chat about Daytona USA 2's about-damn-time console debut before diving into a retrospective on the divisive Dreamcast port. Then, we cap things off with hands-on preview impressions of the new Forza Motorsport fresh from an event hosted by Turn 10 Studios, a month before the game's release. Gran Turismo 4's hailed as one of the racing genre's all-time greats. But almost 20 years since release, a culmination of discoveries have now allowed modders to take Polyphony's 2004 opus to new heights. In this episode the boys chat with TheAdmiester, developer of the Gran Turismo 4 Spec II mod and Prize Randomizer, about his efforts and what they've taught us all about The Real Driving Simulator. You can follow @TheAdmiester on Twitter. For more between each podcast, follow @time_extend on Twitter, timeextend on Twitch and visit timeextend.carrd.co to join our Discord.

075 | The Dirt Revolution

2007's Colin McRae: Dirt didn't just reinvent Codemasters' rally games; it left an indelible mark on the genre, and became the benchmark to which every off-road racer was compared against. In this episode the boys revisit the original trilogy, discussing Dirt's continual evolution and improvement throughout the generation, and how the late, great Ken Block truly made the franchise his own. 074 | Rally De Prism

074 | Rally De Prism

2023-03-0101:07:20

In the late '90s, a short-lived developer named Prism Arts made a pair of budget Sega Rally clones for the PlayStation that never left Japan, and thus flew under the radar for a great many racing game fans. More than two decades later, the charm of Rally De Africa and Rally De Europe is no longer a secret, but we still know so little about them. In this episode, the boys reflect on these lesser-known gems of the era and attempt to uncover their mysterious origins. We're back, ringing in 2023's coldest days with some piping hot takes sourced from you all to keep us warm. Did Ridge Racer "celebrate itself to death?" Did kart racers really never get better than Diddy Kong Racing? And is every modern racing game the most reductive version of its franchise? Responses to these arguably controversial opinions and so much more lie ahead! For more between each podcast, follow @time_extend on Twitter, timeextend on Twitch, and ask us for an invite to our Discord community.
With Need For Speed Unbound's release right around the corner, what better time than the present to finally dive into the series' big turn to tuner culture in the early aughts: Underground and Underground 2. Hugely controversial before release but quickly a runaway hit, EA Black Box's work on these titles defined NFS for a generation of fans. Us at Time Extend, though, have more complicated feelings. For more between each podcast, follow @time_extend on Twitter, timeextend on Twitch, and ask us for an invite to our Discord community.
We often talk about old games and old systems on Time Extend. But what are you to do if you want to — heaven forbid — actually play one of these golden era racers in the finest quality possible? Nobody can answer that question better than our guests this week: Digital Foundry's John Linneman, and designer and musician Andrew Elmore. In this monster two-hour pod, they walk you through everything you need to know to achieve an absolutely pristine experience with fifth- and sixth-gen consoles — the days when racing ruled. And if you don't want that for some reason, Brend's got tips for you, too. You can find John Linneman's work on the Digital Foundry YouTube channel, and follow him on Twitter @dark1x. Andrew Elmore's music lives at satellitesound.bandcamp.com, and you can follow him on Twitter @AndrewElmore. More than 15 years since its release, it's still not uncommon to hear those who've played it praise Tourist Trophy as the finest two-wheeled racer of all time. For #70, the boys finally give the Gran Turismo spinoff its due, with the help of a special guest. We also discover a rare bit of sim racing gear that really deserved to change the hobby forever.
