Culture is making some dramatic shifts all around us. Sometimes as Christians we feel like we are living in a foreign world. There is a good reason for that. The Bible says that we are foreigners and aliens in this world. But this is not the first time that God’s people have been in foreign territory. The Old Testament of Daniel records the history of the Jewish people being in a foreign land and a hostile culture. In Daniel, we learn that when culture shifts, we need to know who we are, reaffirm our convictions, and respond with love. We can do this by learning to live in the tension between truth and grace. Truth is God’s standard, and without it we lose our way. Grace is God’s favor, and without it we can seem judgmental and mean.
