Damien Cain is an Ireland-based independent artist whose music blends melancholic alt-rock, gothic undertones, and a cinematic sense of storytelling. Active since the late 1980s, he first gained underground recognition with his progressive art-rock project Celtic Crypt and later with CAIN – whose 2000 single ‘Age of Darkness’ sold over 250,000 copies and earned the Impala Diamond Award.
Over the years, Cain has collaborated with artists ranging from Sir Christopher Lee to Wayne Hussey (The Mission), and developed a signature sound rooted in emotion, atmosphere and poetic darkness.
Now living in Co. Laois, Ireland, Cain returns with his new album ‘Standarte’, his most personal work to date. Mixed and mastered at Hellfire Studios in Dublin, the record brings together international musicians and explores the line between alt-rock, soft rock, darkwave, and melodic hard rock.
‘Standarte’ marks both a continuation and a rebirth: three decades of stories carried forward into a new era.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Damien about his new album, the creative process behind it, his extensive career, and so much more.

Interview: It's Time to Thrash - Talking Dead Flesh Rising with Guitarist/Vocalist Rafal of Hellmaze by Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life
Groove metal Texans, Upon a Burning Body, are back with their brand-new album, ‘Blood of the Bull’. Released on December 5th, 2025.
On the one hand, Upon a Burning Body keep it really simple here. Delivering a bevy of riff-based groove-infused metal with slamming tendencies. Whereas on the other hand, this is up there as one of their most experimental releases to date. Finding the band exploring metalcore territories and delivering poppier choruses. It’s a fascinating listen, thirty-odd minutes of varied, but familiar, metal that has plenty of banging moments, with just the occasional misstep here and there.

We spoke to vocalist Danny Leal about the new album and how Upon A Burning Body are in a much better place now they have gone independent. We talk about their evolution, the challenges around touring abroad, and much more.

It’s been six long years, but the impossible has happened, Dutch progressive metal innovators Textures are back with ‘Genotype’. Serving as the conceptual counterpart to 2016’s acclaimed Phenotype, the new album arrives January 23rd, 2026, on the band’s new label home, Kscope.
It's all about evolution, which in progressive rock really shouldn’t be that much of a surprise, but the new layers that Textures offer here will divide to some degree. This is the Textures you know, but they’ve grown that bit more and found a array of new soundscapes to explore. Resulting in a dynamic listen that captures the imagination.

Out on January 23rd, 2026, via Mascot Records, ‘The Fallout’ is the new album from the Manchester alt-rock band, The HARA.
The HARA’s ability to fit neatly within the alternative rock scene, while having a wider sound base that draws from varied genres, has always made them special. Yet, there’s an argument that they’ve been missing a little something that could help transform them into giants of the scene. Something that nobody really knew they were missing until now. That something is authenticity.
It does feel like they’ve reached a whole new level here, and all because it has the potential to connect with a broader audience.

Japanese metalcore force Crystal Lake are back with their seventh studio album, The Weight of Sound, set for release on 23rd January 2026 via Century Media Records.
The Weight of Sound is a strong and confident statement from Crystal Lake. It showcases a band that knows exactly who they are while still finding room to evolve. Across the album, they balance aggression, melody, and variety well. Intelligent guest appearances and sharp, focused songwriting help elevate the tracks. While some moments occasionally feel familiar, particularly within the conventions of metalcore, there are plenty of standout passages of brutality, catchiness, and genuine emotion. All of this is delivered with precision and intent. As a whole, The Weight of Sound stands as one of the most complete and engaging releases in Crystal Lake’s catalogue to date.

On January 16th, blackened deathcore quintet Ov Sulfur will release their sophomore album, ‘Endless’, via Century Media Records.
Ov Sulfur have evolved beyond the constrictions of deathcore and in doing so, have refreshed the genre itself. All by utilising black metal and melody in clever ways. I’m not saying that Ov Sulfur have changed the deathcore game here, because they haven’t, but they’ve created something that does stand out.
What it also shows is personality and authenticity, and across ten immense efforts, there’s a surprising emotive vein running through the music. There’s also some cinematic flair, dramatic melodies, blackened ferocity, and crushing breakdowns, because this is modern deathcore, none the less.
Read the full review of the album here: https://www.gbhbl.com/album-review-ov-sulfur-endless-century-media-records/
Shortly before Christmas, we spoke to guitarist/vocalist Chase Wilson about the new album and the journey that Ov Sulfur have been on to realise their vision.

Released on January 2nd, 2025, via Bloodblast Distribution, ‘The wilted’ is the brand-new EP from modern metallers Paleface Swiss.
A four-track (plus an intro) release that sees the Swiss band building on their impressive 2025 in style. Not only solidifying their heavy reputation but showing what the future of Paleface Swiss might sound like. They’re evolving and diversifying their sound, and it’s only going to help them grow bigger and bigger. An EP that is all about depth, variety, and expanding range.
Shortly before Christmas 2025, we spoke to guitarist Yannick Lehmann about the new EP, and the stories behind the songs on it. We also talk about the year they had, how this EP is future focused, and where they might be heading next.

UK mathcore heavyweights Pupil Slicer third album, ‘Fleshwork’, is out now via Prosthetic Records.
A record that explores how society and the machinery behind it (political, financial etc.) dehumanises and devalues the most marginalised (the poor, disabled, queer, people of colour etc.) in a ‘sort of’ conceptual way. Fleshwork is Pupil Slicer at their most visceral, at their most honest, and in their rawest state. Delivering some of their most intense music to date, but also their most compelling as their evolution reaches an impressive apex.
Evolved, experimental, intense, and emotional sounding, the detail within Fleshwork is what ensures it will be long lasting, but alongside that are more accessible elements that give the band’s sharp and complex mathcore edge a freshness.
Check out our full review here: https://www.gbhbl.com/album-review-pupil-slicer-fleshwork-prosthetic-records/
At the end of November 2025, Pupil Slicer embarked on a co-headline tour of the UK with LLNN (Worn Out as support). An incredible show that confirmed them as one of the best bands in the UK today.
Pupil Slicer are more confident than ever on stage and a lot of the new tracks allows a certain amount of ‘flair’. What we’re seeing now is a performance, a more developed side to Pupil Slicer, and it’s making them all the more watchable from a casual perspective. Not the hardcore lot though, they’re far too busy pitting to the heavy mania to see anything happening on stage.
A few hours before they hit the stage, I sat down (in The World's End) to chat with vocalist/guitarist Kate and bassist/backing vocalist Luke about the tour. Talking about the highs of the run, the fun they've had, the stronger connections they're forming with their fanbase, their favourite things of the year, a perfect Pupil Slicer Christmas, and more!

601, the electronic duo capable of filling dancefloors and mosh pits equally, are back with their brand-new album, ‘We Are Not the Same’. Out now via SeeHear Recordings. Marrying the worlds of rock and electronica, but in a unique way and with varied collaborations.
601 have one hell of a story, going all the way back to the early-90s, and that history is prevalent in what they do here. However, what really impresses is that this record still has a strong, contemporary sound and sounds fresh. Least of all because of 601’s interesting blend of styles and genes.

Davghter, the trans black metal band from London, will release their new EP ‘Mask Casket’ on December 1st, 2025. An EP that takes the misanthropic aggression of black metal and points it at the reality of living in a world that tries to define you out of existence. This is black metal as a site of collective survival rather than spectacle.
A mighty release that showcases immense creativity born from the souls of those who believe in what they are doing. This is black metal with feeling, black metal with a point, and black metal that everyone can embrace.

Dissonant, depressive, unflinchingly honest, nihilistic, and incredibly cathartic, this is a summation of P+A+G+E+S (FKA ‘Morning Pages’ from 2014 – 2019) debut album, ‘No More Can Be Done’. The South African doom, atmospheric noise, drone and sludge post-metal trio released it on October 25th, 2025.
Nihilism at its most uncompromising, and nihilism that comes with a highly experimental touch. The trio that is P+A+G+E+S are a damn near indescribable bunch and defy all genre logic across five (four if you pick up the vinyl version) expressive, intense, and elaborate efforts. It’s not that it’s heavy, after all, heavy albums aren’t exactly in short supply, it’s that it embraces misery while exploring the reasons behind it. The world is not in a good place, and day by day, we seem to be careening towards even darker times. Yes, it’s a nihilistic way to think, but it is reality, and that is what P+A+G+E+S explore.

Formed in January 2018, Temples on Mars are an alternative progressive rock band from London, UK, featuring James Donaldson on guitar/vocals, Gerald Gill on guitar, Daz Carikas on bass guitar, and Dean Gibb on drums. They are here to present an accessible, progressive rock sound to Plant Earth!
They released their second full-length album, 'The Last Ship' on October 31st, 2025. A sonically expansive and emotionally charged collection that marks a bold evolution in the band’s sound. Building on the foundations of their critically acclaimed self-titled debut and the darker, electronic explorations of Parallels V.1, the new album pushes boundaries further than ever before.
We spoke to guitarist/vocalist James Donaldson about the new album, the work that went into making it a reality, the challenges experienced, the growth of the band, and so much more.

Released on November 7th, 2025, Shatter & Bloom is Stellvris’ explosive new EP, blending raw emotion, melody, and heaviness into a powerful statement of modern metal strength.
Since forming in 2019, the European metal outfit have built their brand around honesty and emotional depth, exploring pain but also how to turn that pain into power. Here on their new EP, Shatter & Bloom, they deliver their most intense statement yet.
We loved it. Describing it as:
A high-energy, intense, and creative record. When you pack so many ideas, components, and genre switches into a release — and even within individual songs — there’s always a risk of losing some listeners. But Stellvris manage to strike a balance, especially between the electronic elements and the more traditional instrumentation. What’s clear is that this band has real talent: powerful rhythm work, strong guitar and bass tones, and a remarkably versatile vocalist. They know how to use those strengths intelligently, and the crisp production ensures every detail shines through. The result is a modern, ambitious, and fiercely engaging release from a band that looks set to achieve huge things.

How to take over the world – a Melrose Avenue story.
It all just keeps getting bigger, doesn’t it? The Sydney alt-rockers are absolutely soaring, selling out venues around the world, including every single date on their massive UK and European tour which began in London on November 13th.
There, the band debuted their latest track, the achingly beautiful ‘This Is the End’. A track we described as:
It really doesn’t get more emotional than this, and so much of that emotion comes from the authenticity of it all. Just vocals and guitar, super simple, with all the focus being on Vlado’s voice and words. It’s beautiful, and having seen it performed live, it has even more power in that environment too.
Yes, we were there for the London show, and you can read the review of that show here: https://www.gbhbl.com/live-review-melrose-avenue-at-the-dome-london-13-11-25/
The day before the show, the foursome were in London and we sat down with them to talk all things Melrose Avenue. The past, present, and future. For fun, we also challenged them with a special London-based quiz.

German-based alternative outfit Seven Blood will release their debut album ‘Life Is Just a Phase’ on November 21st, 2025.
Seven Blood have arrived, and the world of alternative metal is all the better for it.
Each track hits hard, but it’s not just the music that proves to be so compelling as Seven Blood’s authentic lyrical content makes for an enthralling listen. Especially when the words are being delivered with such power and poise.
A head-turning debut that turns emerging talent into bone fide stars.

Joy Shannon is an Irish harpist and singer whose ethereal and haunting songs come from depths of Irish folklore. Her melodies evoke images of witch’s lairs in dark woods or the distant echoes of the voices of spirits in the ancient places of the Irish countryside.
Joy Shannon’s newest album release In the Forest Singing Sorrowless' is inspired by author J.R.R. Tolkien’s poetry, with Shannon’s original music accompanying Tolkien’s wonderful words. Shannon decided to create this album during a personally challenging year, when she went through medical treatments for breast cancer. Tolkien’s works have always been an inspiration for Shannon, especially to have hope and purpose at the darkest times, so the recording of this album carried her through a difficult time. The resulting album is a mystical dream-walk through Tolkien’s landscapes, through the magical lens of Shannon’s intimate harp and vocals.
This album, the story of its release, the journey that Joy Shannon has been on to make it a reality, the incredible collaborations, and so much more, is what we discuss in this interview.

2025 has been an incredible year for Iranian-Norwegian metallers Confess. Back in January, they released stunning new album, ‘Destination Addiction’, which was produced by frontman Nikan Khosravi, mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated Alberto De Icaza (Amon Amarth, Clutch, Miss May I, Dead Cross, Upon A Burning Body) and featured performances from extreme metal luminaries George Kollias (Nile) and Marzi Montazeri (ex-Phil Anselmo and Illegals, ex-Superjoint Ritual, ex-Exhorder, Heavy As Texas).
Then, in September, the band had their story featured in a full episode as part of the HULU show ‘Into the Void: Life, Death & Heavy Metal’. Now, finishing the year off in style, the band are re-releasing their seminal second album ‘In Pursuit of Dreams’ on November 7th, 2025.
Seminal, because it was the last record they dropped while still in Iran, and in frontman Nikan Khosravi’s own words has become:
A lightning rod for rebellion, defiance, and unapologetic expression.
This album, its importance, the decision to re-release it, and much more, is discussed in our interview with Nikan.

Rising swiftly through the ranks of modern metal, Rituals are back with their brand-new EP, ‘Hope in Hatred’, which boasts the Newcastle quartet's most aggressive and cohesive release to date. Armed with a feature from the singer of UK mainstays, Bury Tomorrow's own Tom Prendergast. The five-track record is an onslaught of riffs, monolithic vocals and pure Northern rage.
It is out on November 7th, and we sat down with all four members to talk about it, what they’ve been up to since we last spoke a few years ago, and so much more.

Swedish rock heavyweights Smash Into Pieces are set to unleash their most ambitious album to date, ‘ArmaHeaven’, arriving October 31st, 2025.
Picking up where their previous album Ghost Code left off, the new chapter throws listeners into a dystopian future where Ghostis, now unstoppable, seizes control of the world. As the resistance falls, a new force emerges: an AI-driven entity that sparks an all-out digital war for dominance. The clash escalates into global catastrophe, exploring themes of power, survival, and rebirth. Will humanity find salvation, or will the machines consume themselves in a final great reset?
Constantly setting rock trends, Smash into Pieces return with, arguably, their biggest record to date. Not only because it tells an elaborate story with exciting twists and turns, but because they express this story in anthemic fashion. Come for the rocking heaviness, melodic potency, and chorus-driven delights, but stay for the detail. That’s a simple summation of ArmaHeaven.
