More than seventy grassroots organizations across New York and New England will conduct coordinated Bannering actions on October 10 and 17th—large, high‑visibility political messages displayed from highway overpasses during peak weekend traffic. These actions are designed to encourage civic participation and voter engagement ahead of the 2026 Midterm elections. Today, on the Hudson Mohawk Magazine, First, Mark Dunley reports on the protests held by Beyond Plastics against Starbucks in response to their unverifiable claims that its single-use plastic cold cups are “widely recyclable.” Then, we have an interview with Abu Zeyn who will be performing Egyptian Spiritual Jazz at The Sanctuary for Independent Media this Friday October 9th. After that, we have an interview with comedian Jovan Afzali. Finally, we have a poetry recording from a beautiful fall day.
Democracy appears to many people to be in trouble not just in the US but around the world. At a recent salon gathering Opinion writer Jay Jochnowitz and Rosemary Armao, host of the podcast Beyond the Brink and Fighting Back talked with their audience about what had them worried. They pointed to the unsettling rise of far right politicians and the ADF party in Germany and to America's faltering relations under the Trump-Vance administration with old allies. The old order, they say, seems to be disintegrating and what that means for American power is unclear. In the past under such confusing and potentially dangerous times America seems to have always found a hero... a leader with vision and courage to move the country forward. Do we see anyone like that now?
