2026 Show Notes Addendum: If you're a NintenDomain listener who is new to NNR from Trey and I's "Nerd Noise Radio - Channel Trey" one-off simulcast collaboration, then this rerun should be uniquely interesting to you! So, "Channel Trey" was a one-off between Trey and I, in the style of an episode of the now-defunct "Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 2" which I used to do with Hugues Johnson of Retro Game Club (so, another "so and so Johnson" out of Chicago), only with Trey at the mic instead of Hugues. It was in the exact style and format of Channel 2.  Well, funnily enough, what went on to become Channel 2 also began life as a similar fun one-off between Hugues and I all the way back in December 2019. And here is that 2019 one-off. Hugues and I's 6yr earlier parallel to Trey and I's recent outing. This was before I knew I was AuDHD (Autistic + ADHD), and before I knew I possessed African and Jewish ancestry. It was also before I started editing out the "ums". But it's remarkable to me how "different yet the same" it feels to our official Ch 2 episodes which came later, or "Channel Trey" which rose from the ashes of the now-defunct Ch 2. PRODUCTION CAVEATS: At this point, I had not switched from Mac to Linux, so I was using Garageband in MacOS on a late 2014 Mac Mini. Also, I had not yet upgraded to the Focusrite 4i4 (3rd Gen) XLR-to-USB interface, still using the lesser M-Audio MobilePre, and had not yet upgraded to the RODE Podmic dynamic microphone, let alone my current Shure SM7B, but was still using my original AudioTechnica AT2020 condenser mic, and lastly, was recording in a very very echoey room with no noise cancellation. But apart from inferior hardware, software, and production techniques, and apart from this being my very first time ever doing something even remotely like this, the seeds of all NNR Channel 2 episodes, as well as the seeds of "Channel Trey" are all very much present here! This is where it all started: Channel 2, Channel Trey.....all of it! My intent for this month is to also rerun not only our very first  official Ch 2 episode from Sept 2020, but also C1E16: "Songs with Words", the first episode of the last season, and what in my personal opinion is the very best Ch 2 episode of all, perhaps save for C2F, our "series finale". Also, if you look back to December 2025 on the NNR podcast feed, you can also catch C2E20: "...all good things...", our final non-retrospective episode of Ch 2. So, if your first experience with Nerd Noise Radio was "Channel Trey", then you'll get to hear a lot of the context behind that episode! In any case, enjoy the rogue one-off that became an entirely new Nerd Noise Radio program, which would ultimately culminate in yet another rogue one-off with Trey Johnson of NintenDomain!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------Original show notes---------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. John of "Nerd Noise Radio" and Hugues Johnson of "Retro Game Club" (and "The Retro League" alum) join forces to cover and discuss some of their favorite pieces of VGM from the 2010's. It's about what you'd expect if you put Retro Game Club / The Retro League, Nerd Noise Radio, Legacy Music Hour, and an entire decade of VGM in a blender....ooh, or maybe the hadron collider! For the time-being, this is just a one-time "one-off" special, but if there is enough demand from either, or especially both of our respective listener pools, then we're open to making this an ongoing (albeit occasional, and likely irregular) thing. "Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 2", maybe? ;-) Anyway, the power is yours, listeners! Make your voices heard! In the meanwhile? Today's broadcast is a fun one-off between Trey Johnson of NintenDomain and W.A.R.T. Radio fame and myself in the style of a Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 2 epiosde with the theme of "tracks we discovered in 2025".    Apologies for the absurdist length - but if you miss Ch 2, I think this one will scratch that itch for you! Also reminder that what would eventually go on to become Channel 2 also started as a fun one-off between Hugues and I, so you never know what the future holds! (I'll re-run that 2019 Ch F between Hugues and I later this month for contrast).   Tracklist:   Track# - Track - Game - System(s) - Composer(s) - Selected By   01) Zebra Bananza - DK Bananza - Switch 2 - Daisuke Matsuoka, Reika Nakai, Yuri Goto, and/or Tsukasa Usui, Noato Kubo - Trey          a) Introductory Earcatcher - 00:00:00          b) Music - 00:00:03          c) Introduction - 00:02:13          d) Top of the Show - 00:03:56          e) Discussion - 00:20:09   02) PerfecT Shape - to a T - Multiplatform - c: Sakai Asuka and/or Keita Takahashi / v: Sam Bird - St. John          a) Music - 00:26:25          b) Discussion -00:28:12   03) When the Moon's Reaching Out Stars - Persona 3 Reload - Multiplatform - c: Shoji Meguro / a: Atsushi Kitajoh / v: Azumi Takahashi - Trey          a) Music - 00:45:00          b) Discussion - 00:48:37   04) Starview Peak - Mario Kart World - Switch 2 - Maasa Miyoshi, Takuhiro Honda, Yutaro Takakuwa, and/or Atsuko Asahi - St. John          a) Music - 00:54:59          b) Discussion - 00:56:50   05) Kronos Island (First Lap) - Sonic Racing Crossworlds - Multiplatform - Takahiro Kai, Tae Fujimoto, Kanon Oguni, Hidekuni Horita, Iona Takashima, Hiroki Kiriyama, Satoshi Okamura, Makoto Tokuyama, Satoshi Oike, Keisuke Tsukahara, and/or Saki Tsuda - Trey          a) Music - 01:03:48          b) Discussion - 01:06:17   06) Race Music 2 - New Star GP - Multiplatform - Benjamin Rooker, Alistair Edmond, Viraj Ramsharan, Giovanni D'Ambrosio, and/or Declan Birchall - St. John          a) Music - 01:19:49          b) Discussion - 01:22:11   07) Captain Falcon - F-Zero GX/AX - Game Cube - Hidenori Shoji - Trey          a) Music - 01:29:33          b) Discussion - 01:33:03   08) RedWood Forest - Fast Fusion - Switch 2 - Bjulin, and/or Francisco Cerda - St. John          a) Music - 01:39:32          b) Discussion - 01:43:17   09) Fury Green - Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Switch / Switch 2 - Kenji Yamamoto - Trey          a) Music - 01:49:22          b) Discussion - 01:52:35   10) The First Day - Dungeons of Hinterberg - Multiplatform - David Zahradnicek, and/or Markus Zahradnicek - St. John          a) Music - 02:02:12          b) Discussion - 02:06:18   11) Lumiose City (Day) - Pokemon Legends Z-A - Switch / Switch 2 - Minako Adachi, Hiromitsu Maeba, Carlos Eiene, Shinji Hosoe, Ayako Sasō, Takahiro Eguchi, Hitomi Sato, and/or Shota Kageyama - Trey          a) Music - 02:14:02          b) Discussion - 02:18:05   12) Eggshell Hotel - DK Bananza - Switch 2 - Daisuke Matsuoka, Reika Nakai, Yuri Goto, and/or Tsukasa Usui, Noato Kubo - St. John          a) Music - 02:28:24          b) Discussion - 02:32:20   13) Royal Capital of Grancel - Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC - Multiplatform - Wataru Ishibashi - Trey          a) Music - 02:42:02          b) Discussion - 02:45:28   14) Pull of the Light - God of War: Ragnarok - PS4 / PS5 / PC - Bear McCreary - St. John          a) Music - 02:51:32          b) Discussion - 02:53:16   15) Black Tar - Xenoblade X - WiiU - Hiroyuki Sawano - Trey          a) Music - 02:59:13          b) Discussion - 03:05:27   16) First Time Setup - N/A (System Music) - Switch 2 - Kazumi Totaka - St. John          a) Music - 03:10:40          b) Discussion - 03:13:09   17) Level 1 (Velgress) - UFO 50 - Multiplatform - Eirik Suhrke - Trey          a) Music - 03:21:01          b) Discussion - 03:22:49   18) Okada Clan HQ - Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons - Multiplatform - Arman Aspromonti  - St. John          a) Music - 03:28:33          b) Discussion - 03:31:24   19) Pride from Despair - Yakuza Kiwami 2 - PS4 / XB1 / PC - Hidenori Shoji, Yuri Fukuda, Chihiro Aoki, Saori Yoshida, and/or Takiya Kuroda - Trey          a) Music - 03:40:36          b) Discussion - 03:45:06          c) End of Show - 03:56:07          d) Closing Track Discussion - 04:01:09          e) Final Self-Promos - 04:03:05          f) Sign-off - 04:05:56   20) Credits Song (Legends of Trivia) - Jackbox Party Pack 11 - Multiplatform - Nate Sandberg - St. John            a) Music - 04:06:22            b) Outtake - 04:09:35   Total Episode Runtime: 04:17:38   You can find NintenDomain here:   https://nintendomainpodcast.com/   And you can find the NDM Episode 500 link here (where I make a cameo in the final 3/4 of the episode):   https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/500-500-500-500-a-guest-for-every-hundred-we-made/id1055861408?i=1000741049701   NintenDomain can also be found on the podcatcher of your choice, as well as on most social media platforms!   As for Nerd Noise Radio, be on the look out for that 2019 Ch F rerun, probably a proper Ch 2 rerun, and of course, C1R8 - our Channel 1 "2025 best of year in review episode". 2025 Show Notes addendum:   In light of the release of C1E100 (the final "non-retrospective" Ch 1), I thought it would also be good to release C2E20 (the final "non-retrospective" Ch 2) as a nice tie-in. Though my production quality has improved somewhat since late 2024, it is nowhere even remotely close to the quantum leap that is the difference between my Dec 2025 and my Jan 2017 production quality difference with C1E1. Channel 2 was a COMPLETELY different kind of show, though. Rather than being a vaguely NPR-esque mixtape-style program that was "less a podcast per se" and more "a late nite FM radio music program which just so happened to go out over the podosphere", Ch 2 was a "proper podcast" with a co-host out of Chicago and myself taking turns sharing tracks and talking about them. We wrapped the show at the end of 2024 because my co-host had been podcasting since 2009, and would be turning 50 in 2025, and so he decided at the end of 2023 that he would be retiring completely from podcasting at the end of 2024, and I didn't feel like replacing him, so we just wrapped it together. Anyway, since we referenced C2E20 and even featured a few tracks from it in C1E100, and since we're rerunning C1E1, I figured I'd rerun this too. By the way: that one upcoming Ch F one-off with Trey Johnson of NintenDomain and W.A.R.T. Radio will be in this exact format - only, obviously, a different co-host.   Anyway....enjoy! Also, this rerun will release on Christmas Eve. So, Merry Christmas to anyone who celebrates it - and a belated Happy Hannukah to anyone who celebrates it instead (I celebrate both, myself!) :-D   ------------------------------------------------------   orig show notes   Today’s Broadcast is C2E20, for Theme Thursday, Oct 24th, 2024. All good things must come to an end. Today is the final “regular” (as in, “final non-retrospective” episode - and as opposed to “final all time” episode). This will be the final episode where we bring new tracks to the show, though. So it is still an ending. 2025 Show Notes addendum: With C1E100, you just heard how Ch 1 ends. Now, hear how Ch 1 began!   Also, C1E100 ends with a production deliberately designed to be as close to the much much MUCH worse production quality of the original episodes. With today's rerun, you can compare it to the C1E100 ending to see how well or how poorly 45yr old "2025 St. John" did at emulating and impersonating that clunky, and untrained, but "starry-eyed", "pocket full of dreams" 36yr old St. John from C1E1. I definitely want to know what you think at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com or on social media or Discord! Lastly, for as atrocious as the production quality is on this Dec 2016 production (Jan 2017 release), it is actually the [by far] superior version of the episode. In Oct 2016, I produced beta versions of the first four episodes, and shared them under the pseudonym of "Disco Santa's House of Impossible Conundrums" so I could put them out there for a very limited audience to solicit feedback without a mass release (this was before I was using cloud storage, mind you). The final releases of those four episodes were amended based on the feedback received from everyone from Mike Levy of XVGM, to Pieness64, to even Stephen Hill of NPR's decades-running New Age / Space / World / Ambient late-night FM radio program: Hearts of Space. Well, recently, I found the original beta versions of those first four episodes , and here is a Google Drive link to the episode 1 beta - the only NNR production to use an alternate version of the "St. John NNR shout". The version we ended up going with was recorded during the episode 2 beta and applied to everything thereafter. So this episode 1 beta is the only time in show history where an episode opens with an alternate St. John NNR shout - and boy is it pathetic! This one was recorded with me sitting down. The ep 2 beta shout (which eventually became the "official shout") was recorded standing up. Here's a Google Drive link to that original Oct 2016 Ep 1 beta: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FXWu6EsHeveev4h65yKcLkww7jAPPMtA/view?usp=drive_link In fact, here's a link to the entire "Disco Santa" folder, with the Oct 2016 beta versions of all of the first four episodes: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1eueCDmOikIdTXxK_s6VDsWd3Z4QImZeu?usp=drive_link --------------------------------------------------- orig show notes:   The moment has finally come - the Channel 1 podcast is HERE!    Today's broadcast is Episode 1 for ThemeThursday, January 5th, 2017. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. If this is what you want instead, here's the RSS:     http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss    Our episodes will also appear on our Nerd Noise Radio YouTube Channel - just search for Nerd Noise Radio, you'll find us! Today is C1E100 for Theme Thursday, Dec 11th, 2025. Today is our final non-retrospective episode of Channel 1. We made it to 100! Today’s episode is split into two halves: a) a massive pre-show that is actually about 18 minutes LONGER than the “episode proper”, and b) the “episode proper”. She was a lovely person, and through these accounts, it's not entirely too late to [at least sorta kinda] get to know her! She was my mom's sister's daughter - and if I'm being completely honest, she reminded me more of mom than of aunt Karen. I suppose, in a way, she was the closest thing my brother and I had to a sister.   2) Links to C1E1 and C2E20!   I'll upload each this month as reruns. But meanwhile, here is the easiest way to hear them!         a) Link to C1E1:             https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/c1e1-press-start        b) Link to C2E20:               https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/ch-2-nerd-noise-game-club-c2e20-all-good-things   Produced using a nearly equal mix of Audacity and Ardour in Fedora Workstation Linux on an ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2023) laptop with perhaps a little support from a Dell Latitude 7480 (running Fedora COSMIC Linux), a 2017-spec DIY gaming PC (running Bazzite Linux) or the Steam Deck (running Steam OS Linux). Recorded with a Shure SM7B XLR dynamic microphone on a RØDE PSA1+ boom arm through a Cloudlifter and a Focusrite 4i4 XLR-to-USB interface! The "Episode Proper" portion was recorded using Audacity in Fedora Workstation like the others, but was recorded using an M-Audio MobilePre XLR-to-USB audio interface and an AudioTechnica AT2020 microphone deliberately used improperly in order to emulate my much much poorer production techniques as of 2016. An AT2020 actually failed during this recording. Fortunately, I had a second AT2020, so I was able to finish the recording without substantial variation. The first line recorded with the second AT2020 was "I'm John Wedgeworth – thanks for listening."    You can also find all of our audio episodes on https://archive.org/details/@nerd_noise_radio as well as the occasional additional release only available there, such as remixes of previous releases and other content.    We are now a member podcast as well. 2025 Rerun Notes: In anticipation of this month's incoming C1E99: "Listener Picks - vol 3", we are rerunning both previous installments of the Listener Picks trilogy this month!  Today's rerun is the second installment, from December of 2021 And it is less of a sequel per se, and more of an omake (that is, more of an "outtakes" episode). While vol 1 was 40 tracks long and selected by 18 contributors, their total body of contributions was not 40, but instead, an absolutely insane 100!! Well, even in 2025, we'd never do an episode 100 tracks long! Such a mixtape could possibly hit 5hrs long, which is too long even for St. John! :-D  So, what I did instead in 2018 was take the 100 and narrow it down to 40, with the 60 track remainder kept in reserve, intended for a Channel F "F-isode" to immediately follow as a bonus and feature the remaining 60. This bonus was to feature Trey Johnson of the NintenDomain and W.A.R.T. Radio podcasts as co-host, and be in the original format of W.A.R.T. Radio as a "return the favor" tribute to Trey in return for W.A.R.T. changing formats to match the NNR format. It was also going to feature an interview with a composer, spearheaded by Trey. But schedules did not align, and so the F-isode never happened! Today's rerun, eventually released years later in 2021 as a numbered "official" Ch 1 episode is essentially what that F-isode would've been - only with no interview (scheduling conflicts). Trey would still go on to co-host with me, though. Lastly, as always: all the usual caveats about how much worse my production quality was back in 2021 than it is today, and not to judge the current state of NNR production quality by this rerun. If you are new, and this is your first exposure to NNR, and you enjoyed the content, but were put off by the production, either go back and listen to a recent episode, such as C1E98 or C1E96....or perhaps even better, keep your eyes peeled for C1E99, which is basically this all over again, but at 2025's far improved production quality standards! In fact, in this case, the situation is even worse! My side of the recording session with Trey was lost, and so we had to fallback on his side of the Zoom call for my voice, where I was using a super cheap wireless headset. So my voice quality sounds especially terrible. My apologies if any of that detracts from this otherwise excellent and joyous outing! And with that, please enjoy the very non-standard-formatted - Listener Picks - vol 2, thanks again to Trey for lending his voice and talents in joining me to make this one happen, and please keep an eye out for the trilogy's incoming 3rd (and final) installment! Cheers! -------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes:   Today’s Broadcast is C1E60, for Theme Thursday, December 23rd, 2021 - our final episode of our very non-standard two-year long “Season 4”. So it is fitting that we’d end such a wildly non-standard season - filled with primarily wildly non-standard content already - with such a dramatically non-standard Channel 1 episode. Today’s episode abandons the customary Channel 1 “great big music block” mixtape format for a modified take on the original W.A.R.T. Radio format, featuring Trey Johnson of Nintendomain / W.A.R.T. Radio and St. John. Today’s episode is also a “Lost Level”, as it was originally intended to be a Channel F bonus “F-isode” to supplement “C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol. 1” from December 2018, and was intended to release right after it, in a nearly identical presentation to what you receive today. As such, today’s broadcast shall be “Listener Picks - vol. 2”. All music, other than the background music for the speaking portions was curated by listeners of the show, and are the roughly 60 remaining unused tracks from the pool of roughly 100 that were offered up for C1E40 in 2018, of which only 40 were used.    p.s. We apologize for the uncharacteristically poor audio quality on St. John's speaking voice. Details available upon request, but the short version is that John had technical difficulties on his end of the recording with "the good mic", but fortunately, we had a lower-quality backup recording on Trey's end over Zoom using St. John's built-in laptop mic. The sound quality is diminished, but the content is still preserved.     Note: All Speaking Portions originally produced in December 2021 by St. John     01: Intro     Timestamps: 00:00:00 - 00:05:18  Runtime: 05:18  Emceed by: Trey and St. John     02: Phillip Vaughn Music Block     Timestamps (Including Introduction): 00:05:18 - 2025 Rerun Notes: In anticipation of this month's incoming C1E99: "Listener Picks - vol 3", we are rerunning both previous installments of the Listener Picks trilogy this month!  Today's rerun is the inaugural installment, from all the way back in 2018. It features a semi-standard intro and outro, and a standard mixtape - with the exception of the fact that every track is selected by the listeners (40 tracks - 18 contributors) - and that the intro and outro are guest-curated by a collage of 11 of those same 18 contributors. It was also, at the time, the longest non-retrospective episode in show history - and featured a long, glorious outtakes reel at the end! C1E99 will share a great many of these same attributes! It will feature 70 tracks, collectively selected by 8 listeners (6 of which also contributed to today's rerun (and 3 of which were also featured in vol 2). At just under 3.5hrs, it will also be the longest mixtape in non-retrospective Ch 1 history (even if this new record nearly doubles the [then] record which the 2018 episode set). And it will also feature a semi-standard intro and outro, largely guest-hosted by a collage of the contributing listeners. In fact, unlike today's rerun, this time every single track contributor also contribute their voices to the intro and outro (except for the one which prizes anonimity and requested a text-to-speech be used in his place). And I also anticipate 99 to feature a fairly decent outtakes reel - though not quite as robust and spectacular as today's rerun. So, where vol 2 is less a "sequel" to vol 1 per se, and more of an "omake" (or an "outtakes") of vol 1, the upcoming vol 3 will be the true sequel to today's rerun. The long-awaited "echo". The "let's do this exact same thing one more time". In fact, due to a joint failure of double-checking from both St. John and the contributing listener, C1E99 will even feature one track that was featured in today's rerun. So be on the look out for that and see if you can spot which one it is before the reveal! And yes, it even was the same contributing listener in both episodes! D'oh! :-) Lastly, as always: all the usual caveats about how much worse my production quality was back in 2018 than it is today, and not to judge the current state of NNR production quality by this rerun. And with that, please enjoy the absolute block party that is C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol 1, and keep an eye out for the trilogy's incoming 2nd (rerun) and 3rd (fresh) installments! Cheers! Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway.    Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1  ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. In this very special edition of Nerd Noise Radio Channel F, St. John's 7yr old son, St. Wyatt makes his Nerd Noise Radio debut (at least, in all the ways that matter). This episode will be a miniature of the Channel 2 format - with only one track!  Circumstances: St. John *MEANT* to include a track from one of Wyatt's iPad games into the mixtape of C1E98: "Mishmash Monday - vol. 17", but realized way too late into that episode's production that he had completely spaced it off.  He briefly considered going back into the mixtape and the voice track and retroactively adding the track. But then decided to instead use the occasion of his complete air-headedness to "turn lemons into lemonade" and and introduce Wyatt into the show - something that had been in the back of St. John's mind since the day Wyatt was born. While Wyatt has yet to master the art of radio communication (I hope everyone likes "salad"), this F-isode absolutely melts my heart!....I hope it will you too! Lastly, I actually really like this track....and once again, I hope you will too! Given St. John's penchant for "ironically, humorously literal titles", this one is aptly named: "One for Wyatt!" Track:   01) Gettin' Freaky - Friday Night Funkin' - iOS/Android - Kawai Sprite
2025 Rerun Notes: In commemoration of this month release of the last-ever Mishmash Monday on Channel 1, I thought I'd rerun the first two installments of the series - both from all the way back in 2017 (Season 1 of the show). Therefore, all the obvious caveats on "absolutely atrocious production quality" and blah blah blah (especially on C1E10, the earlier of the two releases). Though this rerun is "officially" and "canonically" the first "Mishmash Monday" (free play) episode in Nerd Noise Radio history, it is really "Mishmash Monday in name only" as it wasn't truly a free play. Instead, it was designed with a very specific purpose and with each track housing a very specific meaning. Though I explain and elaborate fully in a 2019 special expanded rebroadcast of this episode we called "Chandlerfest", which I'll link to below, for now, the tl;dr is that this mixtape was actually made in commemoration for a friend who died entirely too young in Dec 2016, and whose absence we still feel regularly from here in 2025. When I got the news, I left work, went home, and turned my grief into tortured energy, and made this mixtape, with the design philosophy being to use the tracks and the particular arch of the track order to tell the story of the emotions of those of us left behind in his wake as we processed the news of his departure. With this being a 2017 episode, all the obvious caveats on "absolutely atrocious production quality" (especially episodes from the first half of 2017, which were even worse than those from the second half.) But content-wise, this early outing remains one of the most important episodes of Nerd Noise Radio....ever. Here's a link to Chandlerfest for anyone who wants to know more: https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/nerd-noise-radio-reruns-presents-chandlerfest Otherwise, enjoy! Though today's rerun is officially, canonically the "second" Mishmash Monday, it's actually the first "for real" Mishmash Monday. The first "actual free play episode". Not that it was produced before C1E10, but released later, but that C1E10 was a "Mishmash Monday" in name only, and was definitely not a true free play. I'll explain in that episode's rerun. But for now, numbers and dates aside, this was our first actual "free play" episode in NNR history. And even though the production quality is so absolutely horrible, I still regard this episode as an excellent collection of music! Easily in our top 50% of show history, and perhaps even top 25%. Today's "F-isode" is the soundtrack to the upcoming indie game "MAKRANA" designed, developed, and scored by Matt Miller of Des Moines-based Chronarian Games. Matt sits in with St. John at Nerd Noise Studios for a Channel 2-style in-person conversation to discuss the soundtrack and various other matters of varying degrees of relevance. ;-) All tracks from the game MAKRANA, an upcoming game by Chronarian Games for PS5, XBSX and probably other platforms as well. All tracks composed, arranged, and performed by Matt Miller. Tracklist A1) "Production Disclaimer" Earcatcher (St. John on the now NNR-customary $400 Shure SM7B Mic) - 00:00:00 A2) "Episode Opener" Earcatcher (St. John on the now long-deprecated $100 AudioTechnica AT2020 Mic which was the mic St. John used on NNR from 2017-2022) - 00:00:59 01) "ZENITH" (game and track titles all capitalized for stylistic purposes by developer)  a) Music - 00:01:12  b) Discussion and Top-of-Show Business (St. John and Matt sharing a single AT2020) - 00:04:50 02) "OBSERVE"  a) Music - 00:29:39  b) Discussion (all voice recordings from here on out using that same single AT2020) - 00:33:27 03) "REFLECT"  a) Music - 00:47:59  b) Discussion (our shortest conversation of the episode by far!) - 00:51:47 04) "QUADRANT"  a) Music - 00:59:04  b) Discussion - 01:03:21 05) "DEVIATE"  a) Music - 01:28:28  b) Discussion and End-of-Show Business - 01:33:51   B1) Outtakes - 02:04:08 Total Episode Runtime: 02:10:02 Matt and Chronarian Games can be found at www.chronariangames.com as well as on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, BlueSky, Mastodon, YouTube, and X. Special Thanks to Erin Miller, Nora Miller, and Jodee Wedgeworth (aka "St. Jodee") for making this recording session / episode possible.  Produced in a mix of Audacity and Ardour in Fedora Linux on a 2023-model Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop (docked in a "desktop" context) using the aforementioned mics, a Focusrite 4i4 XLR-to-USB audio interface, and in the case of the SM7B, a Cloudlifter in-line signal booster. No alcohol was involved in this recording - however, I do think sleep deprivation may have been a factor! ;-) :-D Enjoy!!

2025 Rerun Notes: A very unique episode in show history, the only time we ever did a "ThreeFer". [2025 Addendum] Our third and final rerun which we’re releasing for July, and third and final rerun celebrating the memory of Masters of VGM (“MoVGM”), and our third and final of my bids to drum up excitement for the “VGM Hall of Fame” (“HoF”)  series spearheaded by Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of “A VGM Journey” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/a-vgm-journey), Professor Tom from “Shujin Academy VGM Club” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/shujin-academy-vgm-club), and myself (as well as any other shows which have elected to join us in the time since my drafting this on July 2nd), we look, at last, to MoVGM’s final year: 2024. The Theme of 2024’s MoVGM was a focus on female and LGBTQIA+ (particularly trans) composers. And Nerd Noise Radio’s contribution for this year was a Channel 1 featuring the soundtrack to the game Celeste, composed by the fabulous trans composer Lena Raine. The pride connection goes even deeper, though, as the game was written and designed by Maddie Thorson, who is also trans, and upon whom the [also also trans] protagonist, Madelaine is also based. From a production standpoint, this is going to be pretty close to on par with a 2025 production as it is using all the same recording hardware, and most of the same production techniques, but may not quite match the current crop due to my using less sophisticated monitoring headphones resulting in a final mix which might be a tad on the “hot” side. Either way, it’s a showcase of great people making great music to a great game with a great message. So, we are quite pleased to present C1E86: “The Celeste Soundtrack” (originally released 06/15/2024). Enjoy ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today’s broadcast is C1E86 for Soundtrack Saturday, June 15th, 2024. [2025 Addendum….sorry for the long-winded] Our second of three reruns which we’re releasing for July, and second of three reruns celebrating the memory of Masters of VGM (“MoVGM”), and the second of three of my bids to drum up excitement for the “VGM Hall of Fame” (“HoF”)  series spearheaded by Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of “A VGM Journey” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/a-vgm-journey), Professor Tom from “Shujin Academy VGM Club” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/shujin-academy-vgm-club), and myself (as well as any other shows which have elected to join us in the time since my drafting this on July 2nd) is just one of, this time, four contributions we made to the series that year. I’ll share links to the other three below, as well as two other bonus links which are acutely relevant to two of them (as well as to C1E96, our “fresh episode” from last month). The Theme of 2023’s MoVGM was sort of the opposite of the year prior. 2022’s theme was a celebration of “big named composers”, like Yuzo Koshiro or Nobuo Uematsu, or The Follin Brothers and so on. Names that probably EVERYBODY already knows, 2023’s theme was “unsung and undersung composers”. Names that were not nearly as well-known as they should be. And so, our Channel 2 contribution followed the same format and design philosophy of our 2022, only with the opposite theme. It’s a little longer, though, because in addition to the same “four and four” as before, we added a ninth and final pair - tracks by unknown composers”. Production notes on this episode relative to the 2022 rerun: by this time, two major changes had happened: 1) I had upgraded from the $100 RODE Podmic I had been using to the current $400 Shure SM7B that I use today, and 2) I had started actively editing out “Umm”s from our conversation. I can’t guarantee that I caught every single one of them. But they’ll certainly be much less present and much less invasive. It still won't rise to the level of a 2025 production (and sounds a little worse with the SM7B’s presence boost turned on at the time, which I’ve since turned off), but it comes appreciably closer than C2E8. Join us again later this month for a Ch 1 on an unnamed soundtrack (and very likely featuring a guest), as well as another Channel F on the VGM compositions of a fellow VGM podcaster, collectively wrapping up our involvement in MoVGM 2! Delicious VGM on Noise from the Hearts of Nerds, and Try Before You Buy on Channel F! And wherever you are….Fly the N!
[2025 Addendum….sorry for the ultra long-winded] Normally, we only share one rerun a month at Nerd Noise Radio. But due to the confluence of a) our having missed the May rerun completely, b) our not getting a June rerun out until the very end of the month, and c) a very important thematic connection to an event currently happening in the VGM podcast scene this month, I’m releasing…..not one……not two……not four…..but THREE reruns in July! From 2022 through 2024, the greater VGM podcast community participated in a glorious group experiment called “Masters of VGM” (or “MoVGM” for short - I think I might’ve even been the one to coin the shorthand…..maybe), where a master theme was decided upon by the community, and then every participating podcast would do an episode, or a handful of episodes in keeping with the crowdsourced theme. Nerd Noise Radio participated all three years - with a Channel 2 in 2022, a Channel 1 in 2024, and in 2023, with a whopping FOUR installments where we had a Channel 1, a Channel 2, and two Channel Fs. Channel F, for the new faces in the crowd is our mechanism for betas, and bonuses, and things which just don’t fit the mold for a regular episode. Channel F is “format agnostic” and does not have any sort of regular release cadence whatsoever. So, “F-isodes” as I call them (and am probably WAY too proud of myself for that), can be just whatever, and come out just whenever. The people who devised and oversaw MoVGM have largely significantly reduced their presence in the podcast scene over the past couple years, and so had elected to not continue MoVGM into 2025. However, a handful of us, Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of “A VGM Journey” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/a-vgm-journey), Professor Tom from “Shujin Academy VGM Club” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/shujin-academy-vgm-club), and myself have decided that, while not formally reviving MoVGM, we were going to do something of our own, in that same spirit. While the name hasn’t been officially finalized as of this writing on July 2nd, and could still change, the “working title” (that will very likely become the final title), which was proposed by Professor Tom is “VGM Hall of Fame” I’ll go ahead and dub it “HoF” for short. Naturally, we’re trying to also inspire other podcasters to join us so that it is not just we three, but at the very, very least, there will be an HoF episode from all of us on the theme of “a soundtrack that belongs in a theoretical “VGM Hall of Fame” (hence the name). Nerd Noise Radio’s contribution to this will be a Channel 1 featuring the Super Metroid soundtrack (C1E97). If I have the time, and the mental energy, I might also supplement this with an F-isode on a much more obscure soundtrack that begs to enjoy greater awareness and celebration (Lucid 9, if it ends up happening). One other major difference between HoF and MoVGM is that MoVGM occurred in June (2023 was so big that it extended into July) where HoF will occur in July. We all wanted to do this in June, but we were all too deep into production of our respective June content at the time that we all agreed to just push it back to July instead. Anyway, over the river and through the woods, to the point I *FINALLY* get: in a bid to not only help draw extra attention to HoF and hopefully drum up a little excitement for it, among both listeners as well as other podcasters, especially prospective participants, as well as to simply celebrate some of the glory that was this remarkable moment in time for a community, this month, I will rerun our 2022 MoVGM contribution, our 2023 Channel 2 contribution, which was a sort of “spiritual sequel” to our 2022 outing (with links to our other 2023 contributions in that rerun’s show notes), and finally, to our 2024 offering. And naturally, we’ll start with 2022. The theme of 2022 was “which composers would you put on your ‘VGM Mount Rushmore’”? So everyone was to pick four composers. Since Ch 2 was Hugues and I, rather than picking just two, we each picked four for a grand total, of course, of eight, and then did a thing where we each picked one track from each of the eight composers (one each for our own composers, as well as one each for the other guys’ composers). With this being a 2022 production, all the usual caveats about production quality differences and deficiencies. Between a lesser mic and less fully developed production techniques, the sound quality will not be up to the standards of a 2025 episode (I also hadn’t started editing out the “umms” yet….apologies for that!). But it’s still pretty decent. Certainly decent enough that it doesn’t really feel like a barrier to enjoyment like, say, a 2018, or especially 2017 episode would be. And so, without further ado: our first of three reruns this month, the first of three to celebrate the memory of MoVGM as well as hopefully whet people’s appetites for HoF: C2E8: “Our Four Favorites” - originally released 06/30/2022.   Enjoy!   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today’s Broadcast is C2E8 for Theme Thursday, June 30th, 2022. Today’s episode will be Nerd Noise Radio’s contribution to the greater VGM podcast scene massive group project “Masters of VGM” (https://mastersofvgm.com) and like all “MoVGM” episodes from all the participating podcasts, will be a focus on our four favorite composers (with a surprise “East meets West” twist) - on a program that we’re quite simply calling “Our Four Favorites”   01) Earcatcher: 00:00:00 02) Hugues’ Composer #4: Yoko Shimomura! We keep the Meet recording in case there is an emergency with the Audacity recording, but otherwise don't use it in the final episode, and I just align and combine our high quality Audacity recordings. On this episode, however, (a first for Ch 2) we lost a portion of Hugues' Audacity recording, so we did have to use our fallback a little bit. At the very bottom of the show notes, I'll include a LONG[ISH] VERSION which explains more. I did everything I could to minimize the impact of the Google Meet recording in the final episode. But it is noticeable at points.   You can find Brian and Kristen Peterson's GoFundMe here: https://gofund.me/1ef0f855.
