This was a very interesting and worthwhile interview with Prof. James Romm about the origins of Plato's Republic and its connection to the disastrous reign of Dionysus I and his son Dionysus II in the city state of Syracuse. It was all the more compelling in light of the contemporary parallels today. Before Dionysus I seized power in Syracuse, it was the richest and most powerful city state in Magna Graecia. It turned out that an authoritarian ruler made things far worse for its citizens.
