In this episode of Standing Post, we're joined by Special Agent Robert Waltman, who discusses one of our lesser known programs: Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS). This initiative focuses on countering the emerging threat that drones, with their small size and high speed, pose to our protectees. As an expert in the technology--Waltman started using drones when they were known as multi-rotors and required pilots to build them from parts off the shelf--he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience about this issue, and tells us a little about his non-traditional path to becoming a Secret Service Special Agent. If you have an interest in drone technology in an exciting and challenging environment, consider a career in the Secret Service. We’re expanding our Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems program to include special agents, officers and technical professionals that are familiar with drones and want to have an impact in the world. When the NFL comes knocking, you answer. So when former NFL wide receiver and current CBS Mornings co-host Nate Burleson expressed interest in training with the Secret Service, we opened our doors. He spent a hot July day undergoing a truncated selection process for our Counter Assault Team, part of our Special Operations Division. They went through the PT, weapons handling, obstacle courses and realistic scenarios that a CAT member could face on the job. At the end of this grueling day, he sat down with Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle to talk about his experiences and our agency. Are you interested in joining the Secret Service? As a child, Uniformed Division Officer Leth Oun experienced some of the worst atrocities known to man: he grew up in Cambodia in the 1970s under the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot’s reign of terror. After years of brutality, he was able to flee Cambodia and made his way to America as a refugee, settling in Maryland. He learned English, graduated from high school and college and eventually joined the Secret Service after the September 11 attacks. As he prepares to retire after two decades with the agency, he sat down and discussed his life’s story, an incredible tale of overcoming adversity and trauma. As a warning, this episode includes a discussion about death and torture by a brutal regime, both against humans and animals. Sensitive listeners or anyone listening with young children may want to skip this episode. Kalogeras and her mother, retired Uniformed Division Lieutenant Carolyn M. Hoey (formerly Beal). In a special Mother’s Day edition of My First Foot Beat, Sergeant Technician Natasha Rowles talks to Sergeant Miranda Grimm and Officer Andrea Farrow about navigating two unique landscapes: motherhood and the Secret Service. In this insightful episode, they discuss the challenges they face as they balance the responsibilities of a Uniformed Division officer with their home lives.
In the April 2023 episode of Standing Post, we sit down with Financial Analyst Andrew Frey to discuss a new type of cybercrime called Pig Butchering. If you think the name is intriguing, wait until you hear about the crime: criminals randomly contact people and slowly befriend them while convincing them that they can make money in cryptocurrency. Criminals executing a Pig Butchering scam have to use a lot of charm and technology, sometimes human trafficking, and they have yielded millions of dollars in ill-gotten gains. This is a fascinating episode that really shines a light on crimes that many people have never heard of.
