Skip Milos was riding high for many years with his dream job. Skip was the official photographer for the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team. He traveled with them, did the game photography as well as all the marketing photography. Fortunately, Skip was smart to go in as a vendor rather than an employee, so he had a little bit of other business, but not much.

Today's episode of the Understand Photography show is a follow up from Episode 158. Tom Mitchell and Peggy talked about ways for Tom to find his niche in photography.
His work is beautiful. However, like most photographers, he struggles to find a look that is specific to him.
Tom has studied his work and could see a theme of trees within his work. Especially stark trees again a sky. The next step for Tom is to update his website to reflect this. His website is a beautiful site, but it doesn’t reflect his signature look yet.
His website was done by www.widerangegalleries.com.
After discussing the niche, Peggy Farren and Tom began talking about how to sell your photography as are in this terrible time. Art shows are canceled, which has really affected art sales.
Tom had to “pivot” the way he sells his fine art photography.
The first step was to completely redo his website.
Tom ran some Google and Facebook Ads. A customer searched for “Utah Photographers” and found Tom’s website and ended up buying a nice sized art piece.
One of Peggy’s strategis: Put her artwork in a High-end Consignment store. Local art sells the best.
Tom came up with the brilliant idea to host a Pop up Art Show in an office that wasn’t being used. He rented it for an inexpensive price for just one day. He made it look like an art gallery including his large artwork on the walls (he used panels), puzzles and some smaller framed, prints. It was open from 5-8 pm on a Saturday.
He served nonalcoholic drinks and snacks.
He ran some Facebook ads targeting local people. His custom audience was people age 30 and older, interest in art, photography, art galleries, interior designers within a 50-mile radius of the location.
He sent emails to every interior designer in his area. Not one showed up but he’ll keep trying. That's one of the keys to success - keep trying!
Another idea is to have an art show at your house. Invite past and potential customers.

Charlotte Gibb is well-known for her Intimate landscape photography. She gives us great insight and ideas for creating our own intimate landscapes. It could be a small section of a vast landscape or even an abstract view on a smaller scale.
Slow down enough to the point that you can notice things. Bring a sense of curiosity and playfulness to it. When you see a grand landscape, zero in to photograph smaller pieces of the landscape. Using a telephoto lens is a great option to photograph little snippets of the grander landscape. Think about the visual story you are trying to tell.
