Happy New Year! What better way to bring in 2026 than ..err... listening to music from over 30 years ago! But regardless, time to jump into one of the most influential years in the history of the scene, 1993. The sound that year was defined by a shift toward faster, darker, and more complex beats. The Jungle/Drum & Bass sound embedded now. Hardcore was flying in 93 too, but we’ll get to that in Pt.2. For this first part we have everything from Lemon D to LTJ, Scott & Keith to Studio Pressure. Since arriving on the scene in 1991 this London based producer has always been the standard for drums, bass and more bass. Working as Dillinja x Capone x Cybertron amongst other aliases this producer's sound is unapologetic, sonically awesome and instantly recognisable. We’ve decided to focus on our favourite time, so far, in his career, 1996 - 2001. IMPRINTS - Reinforced Records (1990-1996) - d mix & Evolve Reinforced Records. Inspired by a night in the Jazz Cafe recently with 4 Hero, Fabio and Grooverider amongst others. I thought it was time to jump into a truly foundational label. One of the first i collected actually! Founded in ‘89 by Marc Mac and Gus Lawrence then joined by Dennis McFarlane. Most of the early releases were combinations of the founders themselves, 4Hero, Manix and Tek 9. Moving towards late ‘92/’93 the label was at the forefront of the darker side of the music. Looking at Goldie with Rufige, the continued work of Doc Scott and Nasty Habits, and not forgetting 4Hero and the techier sample led sound of theirs. You also have to mention the Enforcers Series that was so popular and are still so sought after! I’ve decided to focus on the earlier music from Reinforced, finishing up just about where the ‘2nd Phase’ started. I’ll take you right up to ‘96. I’ll dedicate a final section to one of my favourite producers, Nookie. Who took the Reinforced energy and added that musicality he’s so well known for. Before that is a mix of other artists that shaped the sound of this label. From the craziness of Nick OD, the drums of Ray Keith, the pianos of Manix, the edge of Rider to ruffness of Rufige and the drums of Manix, the feel of Manix, basically Manix… stop saying Manix… Manix. Speaking of M***x, I've included three tracks in the mix from one of my favourite EPs of all time. Tune for tune a winner… the EP is Called ‘Oblivion (Head in the Clouds)’. Wow! Here it is then - Evenin’ all! We started this series of shows in 2011, it’s been on at least 3 radio stations, a podcast on its own and a massive amount of fun - but it’s time for a change up! Our new show The40 will be starting in the New Year - It’ll be much the same as Back to the Future, loads of new music mixed, but just the chance to play some new jingles (when i’ve made them…), we’ll have a couple of new features and a bit of a monthly chart for my favourite of the 40 tracks.
