Fireside chat- Rich Fowllab

2024-05-3001:44:02

"In this week's episode we welcome Rich Fowllab to the show. Rich is a fellow Michigan hunter. We start off with a quick discussion about the weekends fishing trip for Crappie and whatever else would bite down by Josh. We then get to hear about Rich, how he got his start in hunting and the types of hunting he does, discussing some caliber choices, and experiences for deer using the .350 legend, which both Josh and Rich use for deer here in Michigan. We then talk a little bit about barrel life and differences in barrel construction. We go into some detail about the equipment he uses for predators. Rich uses night vision, and he tells us why and we talk a bit about the calls, firearms and such that he uses as well. including likes and dislikes of his current set ups. We get into some more detail in our continued academic research based off cell camera data and what we have gleaned from it, Rich also uses Reveal cameras and has compiled data from them in regards to predators. We finish up with an update from Josh in regards to recent contact with his local DNR officers that clarified some issues for him and were helpful in making things more clear for him in regards to nuisance predator removal. On this week's podcast it's a fire side "tossed salad" Josh starts off asking Kevin about how this last season archery league went and how he felt about the new arrows from ORC archery and his hopes to finally get a deer with it this upcoming season. We talk about some recent depredation hunting, and how bad the ticks are this year already. We talk a bit about snake experiences, then switch into some of Josh recent cooking experiences, including his preparing "jerk" chicken, and what is "hot" in terms of seasoning. Kevin then asks Josh to elaborate a bit on his strategies for deer season preseason scouting, what he looks for, how he uses what he finds and how it has worked for him, we talk data that we have accumulated from the Reveal cameras and compare Josh's data on deer with Kevin's data of predators , finding some similarities that weren't really a surprise to us based off what we have seen for years now, and some info that either was different or the same for both types of animals based off data from the cameras, we then finish that subject with some of the strategies Josh has used for deer on public land. We then move onto some more political and legal discussion in regards to a bill submitted to allow year round coyote hunting in MI ONLY if a hunter has purchased a fur harvesters license, and why that is a bad idea. The stats and data of fur harvesting and coyote hunting in terms of licenses and hunters numbers. We talk about how the rules are currently, how vague or confusing it is, and how some of the things that were stated were not truly applicable under the rules set by the DNR (specifically about still being able to hunt private land), we talk about the interpretation of "reasonable distance" and the possible mindsets behind the DNR leaving it vague. We then take a break from that and talk about some fishing, different species, and types of fishing that we enjoy. To finish, Kevin and Josh both discuss their "bucket list" hunts. Thank you all for listening. We each have that specific pursuit, a target species, whether it be fish, fowl, deer, predators or big game that gets our heart beating faster, and in the end, what keeps us doing it year after year. This week Josh and Kevin talk about their recent turkey hunting experiences. We delve a little deeper into "the passion" that outdoorsmen and women feel, and how it's different for each of us, and why. Sometimes it is based on the experience, and while you may not have deep seated emotions about the target animal, the experience as a whole, the camaraderie, the trip, whatever, it can still lead to a memorable time in the outdoors. Josh explains more about why turkey hunting doesn't hold the same special place that deer or predators do, and Kevin explains why it does for him. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! For this week's fireside chat, Josh and Kevin are joined by Elliot Hubbard. The subject matter of this chat is out of state hunting, but we got a little side tracked with a couple other subjects to start, like hair styles, and martial arts training. We then got talking about Elliot's recent out of state Turkey hunt, we talk about turkey camp, and the story of his successful hunt as well as his wifes successful hunt here in MI. Kevin discusses his recent out of state hunt to Nebraska for coyotes and prairie dogs. How the terrain differences effected how he called, and what he learned from that, seeing a mountain lion, and how he could improve next time out there. And in between those stories we talk about hunting here in MI, laws, politics, costs, and what an out of state hunt means to us, despite the cost. We discuss turkey hunting quite a bit, differences between Indiana and MI, what you are allowed to do there and not allowed to do here, strategies and more. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! This week, Josh and Kevin have our own "fireside chat" We talk a bit about grilling, cooking wild game, including how do you like your venison cooked? medium, med rare, or fresh off the carcass, and the potential dangers of eating some game meats. We then move on to discussing, again, the new Michigan coyote hunting season and the regs associated with damage control and how its written. We then move on to talking about some recent hunts, including Josh taking out a recent guest from the podcast and how that hunt went. Kevin asks Josh about his observations so far on his new optics from Predator Thermal Optics, discussing the features of both the scanner and scope and Josh's thoughts on them. Then we talk about our thoughts on different optics thermal sensors and our thoughts on each one from 160 to 640 and 1280 in regards to what is practical vs what is affordable, and how base magnification makes a difference on effective use depending on the end users anticipated usage. Josh then asks Kevin about strategies for once our season starts back up in July, and we talk about what we expect to see in terms of sounds and what kind of reactions we expect with them having a 3 month or so "quiet time" We discuss using certain sounds, and our experiences with them and times we've heard the coyotes coming to the call, meaning having them so close you can hear them running or walking into the call. We discuss various tactics for hunting summer time in regards to terrain, and the challenges and advantages of crop fields. Then we switch gears and talk about fishing plans for this summer, then go back into talking about cooking...fish, using an air fryer vs a regular deep fryer for various foods. And lastly we finish up by talking about fishing at night, and getting back into trail riding with the kids on bikes. Little bit of everything this week THANK YOU for listening! This week we bring you an important episode in regards to the hunting and fishing future here in Michigan, but this isn't just a Michigan battle, this trend is spreading across the country. Merle Jones, from the MTPCA, joins us again as we talk about what happened at last week's NRC meeting. The DNRC voted to put a season back on coyotes after we've had a year round season since 2016. That is a poor choice for managing these predators in Michigan, but bigger than that is WHY they made that decision. It was not based on science as proposal G requires, but was based on "Social science" better known as "feelings and emotions". We talk about the specifics of what happened at the meeting, and what can be done to ensure that, in the future, decisions on how our wildlife resources are managed are based on facts and science. This is very important information and a battle we need to win, not just in Michigan but everywhere across the country. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! This week Josh and Kevin welcome Jordan Hoover and Elliot Hubbard to the show. Jordan hails from Michigan's upper peninsula where he has been hunting for over 30 years. Elliot hails from the eastern lower part of Michigan. We start off talking about some recent hunts then get right into it. Both Jordan and Elliot have been very active in various sportsman's issues here in the state, mainly deer, but also now the predator hunting issues. Jordan does a good job of breaking down the various issues that have affected the Michigan deer herd, from habitat issues to predation, explaining to us in detail some really good info, as well as possibilities to help our herd. We then discuss the issues facing the predator hunting community, some of how the issue came up, what is at stake, and what everyone can do to help, and to realize that it's not just the closed season at stake, but just a small part of the battle against our heritage in the outdoors. Kelsey Shetler

2024-03-0701:23:10

This week Josh and Kevin are joined by Kelsey Shetler. Kelsey is a 1st generation cattle rancher and hunter from East Texas. Kelsey shares with us growing up down in Texas, getting into working with cattle, and how she got started in predator hunting. Kelsey has been doing a great job on not just predator hunting, but hunting competitions down there, and taking some great pics and videos in the process. We ask her about one of the things that drew us into following her on social media, her raccoon Maizie that accompanies her often while she is hunting. Kelsey also shares with us insights from raising livestock including cattle and now zebras, and the effects of predation, how important it is to manage them for sake of the livestock, but also, how managing a population year round can help reduce disease and other issues in the predator species. We discuss her predator hunting gear set ups, the types of sounds she likes to use throughout the year, stand length, and a bit about what it took her to win in tournaments down there. She also shares with us information about hog hunting down there, including telling us about the damage that the feral hog population can do to a farmers crops and tactics they use. (they get to do some fun stuff down there that we can't up here). As always.. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! This week, Josh and his friend, Todd, are live from the field on a Friday night. Todd tells stories about hunting when he was younger, and the guys discuss why Todd is now getting back into hunting after a bit of time off. They talk about Todd's choice of weapon, scope and ammunition. Of course we have the typical banter back and forth that would happen on a regular Friday night with your buddies. Between stands, Josh describes the events that took place, setups and sounds used. We get insight from Todd on things he is learning while out calling, and we talk about the little communication errors that could have cost us a few coyotes. Shorter episode this week, but we hope you enjoy it. As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! This week, Josh sits down and talks to Minnesota resident Bucky Lindgren. Bucky has been a predator hunter for quite some time, and he tells us all about how he got involved in it. Bucky talks about the calibers he prefers to use, rifle scopes he likes and all the changes in gear through the years. Bucky tells us about the terrain they hunt in Minnesota and how he hunts that terrain. They talk about using vocals to hunt coyotes, which both prefer over using distress sounds. Bucky also talks about season dates, with Minnesota having a year round season but a limited night hunting season. This is a fireside chat, just 2 guys talking about what they love to do, and we hope you enjoy it! As always, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. 2024-02-1501:32:00

On this episode Kevin and Josh are joined by Jeremy Nickel. Jeremy tells us about growing up in Oklahoma where he started hunting predators at a young age with a 22 and a 30-30. We talk with him about how he progressed, primarily self taught, and his choices in equipment, callers, firearms, and optics, as well as the tactics he uses in the varied terrain of his home state. We also talk to him on how that has changed, when in 2022, Oklahoma started allowing night hunting. He tells us about the sounds he likes to use, stand selection, and tactics for multiple coyotes. If you want to follow an effective predator hunter that takes some great photos with some well written stories and captions to go along with them, be sure to look him up on Facebook. This week are are again joined by Merle Jones, public relations director for MTPCA. We start off talking about some recent hunts including a unique scenario with a fox and coyote in the same spot, where Kevin was able to capitalize on both, and then a couple hunts with Josh where he took a friend out to get him his first coyotes. Then we delve into the current situation here in Michigan where the DNRC is looking to put a closed season back on coyotes. The proposal is to have season closed from April through July, like it used to be here in Michigan until around 2016. We discuss the whys of the proposal, the status of the proposal, and the importance of keeping the season as it currently is. And also why we need everyone's help to succeed in this battle. If you care about your predator hunting, as a hunter or a landowner, deer hunter, small game hunter etc, you need to get involved. This week Kevin and Josh welcome back returning guest Merle Jones, public relations director for Michigan trappers and predator callers association (MTPCA). We start off by discussing some recent hunts, including the SPI and GLRPC tournaments, how the conditions were less than ideal, yet the results for the GLRPC were really good, while the SPI was more subdued. We also talk about field experiences with the new FREQ game call, both Merle and Kevin have been using it in the field, and their thoughts so far. Merle then fills us in on recent potential rule changes for predator hunters, if you hunt the limited rifle zone you will want to hear this! Then we talk more about public perception, how it has been brought up from a legislative perspective, and how it CAN effect our rights as hunters, what YOU can do about it, and what we ALL need to do about it. Brian and Janell tell us about their upbringing in the outdoors and what got them into predator hunting. They tell us about how the 2 of them started hunting together and the 1st hunt that led them down the path of Predator Solutions of Michigan. We talk about the species that they hunt, including predators, rats and pigeons to help farmers out, along with deer and turkeys, then what ones we have all tried to eat. We talk about the tools they use while hunting, from the guns they used before centerfire at night was legal, to now, including pcp air guns, and the optics they use, and how much of a game charger thermal has been. They tell us about the types of properties they hunt, small tracks of land, and what helps them be successful in the field in their area. This week, Josh and Kevin are joined by returning guest, Chris Kreiner. Chris was recently successful on his very first Michigan bobcat after a few years of trying, having some screw ups, and ultimately keeping at it and getting it done. The guys talk about how the predator season has been so far for them, and we discuss a little about the "easiest" states we have called in. They talk about their favorite times of the year to call, and how this season so far has seemed unusually slow. Chris breaks down his deer season and tells the story of the November day he got 2 bucks with his bow. We talk about the deer activity in the area, and what kind of deer make Chris want to draw his bow. They break off a little bit and talk about reloading, which both Kevin and Chris enjoy. Josh learns a little more about "MOA" and "MIL" and how they are used in the field. Chris then breaks down his last few years of Michigan bobcat hunting, calling some in, helping a few others get their first cats, but never being able to get it done on his first. He talks about what type of terrain he is looking for, and then using aerial scouting as well as putting his boots on the ground to go find a bobcat. Kevin and Chris both have similar things they look for, so if you are looking for bobcat scouting tips, this one is for you. Chris tells us about mistakes he has made and how they have affected his hunts. They talk about calibers and loads they prefer, and the fur damage that specific loads may cause. Congratulations again Chris! Be sure to check out Dusk to Dawn Outdoors for the photos and video of his hunt, and as always, THANK YOU ALL FOR LISTENING!
