Two non-musical history items for today: 1692 – Bridget Bishop was the first person to be tried for witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts; she was found guilty and later hanged. Doesn't sound too witchy. I'd have thought Brumhilda or something like that. 1763 – Pontiac's Rebellion: At what is now Mackinaw City, Michigan, Chippewas captured Fort Michilimackinac by diverting the garrison's attention with a game of lacrosse, then chasing a ball into the fort. I find this amazing. Both the ingenuity of the natives and the fact that Lacrosse was around at the time. In fact, lacrosse is the oldest organized sport in North America, created based on several games by Native American tribes as far back as 1100AD. Non-musical history for today: 1495 – A monk, John Cor, recorded the first known batch of Scotch whisky. The spelling of the term whisky is often debated by journalists and consumers. Scottish, English, Welsh, Australian, and Canadian whiskies use whisky, Irish whiskies use whiskey, while American and other styles vary in their spelling of the term. I spell it D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S! Non-musical history for today: 2003 – Air France retired its fleet of Concorde aircraft. There were a multitude of factors that led to Concorde's retirement – both commercial and safety-related. The aircraft was noisy and extremely expensive to operate, which restricted flight availability and meant that fares were often prohibitively high for many consumers. I think there were other environmental factors, as well. 2005 – Vanity Fair revealed that Mark Felt was "Deep Throat". Deep Throat was the pseudonym given to the secret informant who provided information in 1972 to Bob Woodward, who shared it with Carl Bernstein, which led to the event known as "The Watergate Scandal." Non-musical history for today: 1431 – Hundred Years' War: In Rouen, France, the 19-year-old Joan of Arc was burned at the stake by an English-dominated tribunal. I've gotten a mad-on about Johanne Darc, lately. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 30. Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza. Non-musical history for today: 2015 – Since I fell in love with the city, One World Observatory at One World Trade Center opened. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 29. Non-musical history for today: 1830 – U.S. President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, which denies Native Americans their land rights and forcibly relocates them. Some claim that Jackson was a good man. Everything that I read makes him out to be an arsehole. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 28. Non-musical history for today: 1199 – John was crowned King of England. Yes, this is the brother of Richard III. Yes, this is the notorious "Prince John" in Robin Hood folklore. Sing it with me, "Robin Hood and Little John walkin' through the forest, laughing back and forth at what the other'n has to say." Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 27. Non-musical history for today: 1896 – Nicholas II was crowned as the last Tsar of Imperial Russia. It was just shy of 21 years later that he and his entire family were executed in the basement of their house during the Soviet Revolution by Bolshevik officers. Their remains were found in the late 70s, identified, given proper burials, and exonerated, and Nicholas and his immediate family were granted Martyred Sainthood in the early 80s. Non-musical history for today: 1977 – Star Wars (retroactively titled Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope) was released in US theaters. That is partly musical but I think it's big enough to include with both musical and non-musical talk. And in 1978 – The first of a series of bombings orchestrated by the Unabomber detonated at Northwestern University, resulting in minor injuries. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 25. Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza. Leave comments at tim@beeswaxvinyl.com or 336-422-NUMB (6862). Non-musical history for today: 1883 – The Brooklyn Bridge in New York City was opened to traffic after 14 years of construction. We have seen it in television shows (think Night Court) forever and got to go under it on the ferry while in NYC. Also, we are fans of the show The Gilded Age, and part of the storyline (albeit minor) was about the opening of the bridge. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 24. Non-musical history for today: 1430 – Joan of Arc was captured at the Siege of Compiègne by troops from the Burgundian faction under the direction of Duke Philip III of Burgundy, aka "Philip the Good." The Burgundians actually lost the siege, but the capture of Jehanne Darc (as she called herself in Middle French) was a major event in the Hundred Years War. She was "found guilty" of heresy and burned at the stake just about a year later. Why do I think of Jane Wiedlin when I think of her? I know the answer, do you? Let me know. Non-musical history for today: 1972 – Ceylon adopted a new constitution, becoming a republic and changing its name to Sri Lanka. I personally think Ceylon sounds cooler than Sri Lanka, but it's not my country to name. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 22. Non-musical history for today: 1881 – The American Red Cross was established by Clara Barton in Washington, D.C. Well, it was established in NYC but some rich biz tycoons donated to build a headquarters in DC. And, happy solar circumnavigational anniversary day to my Nephew and my mother-in-law! Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 21. Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza. Leave comments at tim@beeswaxvinyl.com or 336-422-NUMB (6862). Non-musical history for today: 1873 – Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis received a U.S. patent for blue jeans with copper rivets. The copper rivets are to reinforce the points of stress, such as pocket corners and at the bottom of the button fly. Am I the only one that tends to get burned on them in the summer and you've sat out in your Levis in the sun? Yeah? Well, then... Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 20. Non-musical history for today: 2016 – EgyptAir Flight 804 crashed into the Mediterranean Sea while traveling from Paris to Cairo, killing all 66 people on board (passengers AND crew). In 2022, it was reported that the fire likely was caused by one of the pilots smoking a cigarette, which burned out of control when exposed to oxygen leaking from a cockpit oxygen mask. What in the wide-world-of-sports was this pilot doing smoking on a plane in 2016!? Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 19. Non-musical history for today: In 332, Emperor Constantine the Great announced the free distribution of food to the citizens of Constantinople. That was mighty nice of him. He was one of the less arseholish emperors. Notice I said "less" not "un." Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 18. Non-musical history for today: 1900 – L. Frank Baum's children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was first published in the United States. The first copy was given to his sister. The character Elphaba in Wicked was named that because of Baum's initials. LFB or El Pha Ba. I love The Wizard of Oz and Wicked. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 17. Several items in non-musical history for today: 1905 – The city of Las Vegas was founded in Nevada, United States. 1940 – Richard and Maurice McDonald opened the first McDonald's restaurant. 2008 – California became the second U.S. state after Massachusetts in 2004 to legalize same-sex marriage after the state's own Supreme Court ruled a previous ban unconstitutional. 2002 — My only child, my baby boy, my world, my son, Trey, was born. Happy solar circumnavigational anniversary day, son! Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 15. Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza. Non-musical history for today: 1953 – Approximately 7,100 brewery workers in Milwaukee performed a walkout, marking the start of the 1953 Milwaukee brewery strike. A. Gettelman Brewing Company, Independent Milwaukee Brewery, Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, Miller Brewing Company, Pabst Brewing Company, and Valentin Blatz Brewing Company all saw their workforce walk off the job. Valentin (one of the smaller breweries) started negotiating with the unions, which led to the workers eventually winning the strike and the members voting to accept new contracts that addressed many of their initial concerns. This was also the day of the Warsaw Pact being signed in 1955, but I felt beer was more important. Because... beer. Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for May 14.
