Description
”Johnny Goudie is the Marc Maron of Austin music. The veteran singer/guitarist – best known for fronting early Nineties pop band Mr. Rocket Baby and, later, his major-label rock act, Goudie – stepped up to the microphone with a new intention in 2011 and launched the How Did I Get Here? podcast. Now 840-some episodes in, the hourlong, twice-weekly interview show gives the host a platform to really connect with his Austin music guests, not just on what’s happening in their careers, but also in the shared experience of music appreciation – and that’s where he truly shines.” -The Austin Chronicle 2019

Welcome to another episode of How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today, we go back to episode 1428 on September 20, 2024 with Vicki Peterson (Bangles, Continental Drifters) and Sean Kelly discussing Sean's book, White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story about legendary band Continental Drifters. We talk about the Drifter's operatic story, where they are now, the band's connections to Austin, and much more. Below are my original notes from the show.
Musician and author of White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story, Sean Kelley and Continental Drifter and Guitar player of The Bangles, Vicki Peterson are my guests for episode 1428. White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story follows ten disparate musicians from humble beginnings at a dive bar residency in Los Angeles through lineup changes, addiction, marriages, divorces, and industry letdowns. The Continental Drifters, composed of members of The Bangles, The Cowsills, The Dream Syndicate, The dB's, and more, found each because they'd been burned by the music industry and sought refuge in a freewheeling environment where they could experiment without constraint. When everything fell apart in New Orleans a decade later, they ended up with so much more. White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story Drops next Friday, Sept. 27 along with We're All Drifters: A Tribute To The Continental Drifters, a 2 CD tribute album featuring Marshall Crenshaw, Kim Richey, Rosie Flores and more. Find the book HERE. We have a great conversation about the book, the journey of the Continental Drifters and more. I had a blast getting to know Vicki and Sean. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down!

Welcome to another episode of How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today, we go back to episode 1268 on April 20, 2023 for a special collaboration with Magnet Classics Podcast. Magnet Classics Podcast host Hobart Rowland and I talk to Cotton Mather songwriter and frontman Robert Harrison about their classic album Kontiki. I hope you enjoy our conversation with Robert about this amazing album. I sure did. Below are my original notes from the show.
Hello and welcome to a special How Did I Get Here? and Magnet Classics Podcast collaboration episode where we talk all things Kontiki with Cotton Mather frontman, Robert Harrison! Over SXSW, Magnet Classics Podcast host, Hobart Rowland and I sat down with Cotton Mather's Robert Harrison to talk about their 25 year old classic album, Kontiki, from where the band was when he started writing, to recording it to touring with Oasis in the U.K. in support of it. Listen to Kontiki HERE. Check out Magnet Classics Podcast HERE or wherever you pod. Thanks to Hobart and Robert for this enjoyable chat and Magnet for the collaboration. I hope you enjoy it. I sure did. Below are Hobart's notes on Kontiki.
"Initially released with a whisper 26 years ago on a tiny Houston-based label, Kontiki is one of the great lost albums of the ’90s. Working out of his house and a friend’s place in the Texas Hill Country, Cotton Mather’s Robert Harrison recorded then deconstructed songs he’d once assumed would get a more conventional rock-band treatment. Tools included an ADAT, a four-track cassette recorder and a two-track DAT machine. The result is one of the catchiest “experimental” albums you’ll ever hear. Tracks with odd titles like “Camp Hill Radio Operator,” “Homefront Cameo,” “Aurora Bori Alice” and “Vegetable Row” offer equally strange and cryptic lyrics set to overtly hummable melodies. Conceived in a virtual creative vacuum, Kontiki ranks among the best power-pop albums of all time. A quarter-century later, it still sounds utterly timeless—yet weirdly current." - Hobart Rowland
