Description

Redefining Movement, the LYT podcast, is hosted by two Physical Therapists: Lara Heimann, founder of LYT, and Kristin Williams, COO & Senior LYT Instructor. Together, they explore movement through the lens of physical therapy, neuroscience, and the lived experience of being human.

Blending scientific insights with soulful perspectives, Lara and Kristin transform our understanding of how our bodies and minds interact. Though the show has changed in several ways since the first episode in 2018, the mission remains steadfast and clear: to help us find freedom and feel empowered through intelligent movement patterns and a compassionate outlook, so we can all live more capable, connected, and uplifted lives.

Welcome (back) to Wednesday Q&A, where you ask questions and we answer them! In this episode, Lara and Kristin answer your questions about aging pains, bone density training, and healing Morton's neuroma.Your questions:So happy the podcast is back. I have a question or more of an observation: I noticed more nerve pinching or small muscle tears recently, it never stays long. I move, I swim, I run, and it goes away. This is new for my (50 year old) body. My students also complain regularly (sciatica or other nerve or muscle pains … those who train a lot as athletes do always have something!) Is it only me? Or is there any biomechanical reason that as we age we tend to experience small pains? Any thoughts on this? how to avoid them? PS: now I understand and sympathize with people complaining and understand better why it is so easy to “fall into this decline narrative” … I noticed seniors, menopausal women, or athletes are the population complaining the most about small and most of the time temporary discomfort. With love and lots of good vibes to this new podcast series. My question is in reference to jumping to increase bone density. LYT has always emphasized a soft landing. Now research shows that landing with force stimulates the body to build bone. Are both necessary in different situations? How to heal Morton's Neuroma?Have a question for the show? We're (almost) baaack! Big things are brewing behind the scenes here at LYT, including a brand-new season of Redefining Movement on the way! While we put the finishing touches on what's next, we're taking a little trip down memory lane and re-releasing some of our most-loved Q&A episodes. Today we're sharing an episode that feels just as relevant now as when it first aired. Let's talk about sweat. We can't wait to be back with you! Stay tuned for fresh episodes coming soon. For now, enjoy today's re-release!We're gearing up for the new season and would love your input— what topics and questions we should explore? Send your ideas to [email protected].—Welcome to Wednesday Q&A, where you ask questions and we answer them! Your questions:Can we talk about the hand? I've heard of toe yoga and I use it in my PT practice and self-practice. Is there hand yoga? One thing my local LYT instructor says in class is to press the base of my index finger into the mat during any weight-bearing through the arm. I struggle with this. How can I improve and can you go into the physiology behind it?Can LYT help my anxiety? Sometimes I've felt increased anxiety in other flow classes. My question pertains to the stigma of knee pain. It seems as though the cottage industry of relief for knee pain has created an environment whereby if you experience ongoing knee pain, you must simply be doing something wrong. Despite my ongoing LYT practice and other attempts to remedy said knee pain, it still persists. Specifically, I experience this pain when walking downhill, downstairs, or doing things like weighted lunges or squat pulses from high crescent. In approximate terms, it generally radiates from below the patella on either side, which makes me think meniscus. I would characterize the discomfort as acute in that in more than a few cases, it may decrease when I'm more warmed up, but it never fully goes away. While I would not expect a diagnosis to be made from anecdotes in an email, it is unreasonable to think that some knee pain may not be entirely correctable through “better movement patterns,” strengthening the support structures. And if so, what metrics/means can be used to make that conclusive determination? To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: lytyoga.com/podcast-cpt/619-wednesday-qaConnect with LYT, Lara, and Kristin:LYT on Instagram - @LYTYogaMethodLara on Instagram - @Lara.HeimannKristin on Instagram - @kbwilliams99 Do you have a question?
