Ocular Melanoma is a family disease. It doesn't just affect one person - having this diagnosis, the fear of the unknown can affect everyone from immediate family, friends, and more. Learning how to support each other with varying needs and boundaries amidst your diagnosis is worth the listen to this unique patient panel, led by patient and therapist, Carol McColl. Carol McColl has worked as a licensed professional counselor for 16 years, specializing in trauma recovery. She is also the author of The Single Mom’s Devotional (Revell, 2009.) Carol lives in Dallas, TX, with her husband Angus, their adorable mini-goldendoodle Barney, and her 94-year old father, “Grampy." Carol’s large step-family includes eight adult daughters, with various spouses and partners, and 10 grandchildren. Carol was diagnosed with OM in July 2018, and had plaque therapy in August 2018. First up today you'll hear from Dr. Dennis Stacey, the father of Dr. Andrew Stacey. He will talk about the biology of cancer. Then you'll hear more from Dr. Andrew Stacey on the Biology of Uveal Melanoma. Finally you will hear from Dr. Lucinda Innes about different melanomas, different immunities. Dennis Stacey PhD. As a cancer researcher, Dennis has witnessed the explosion of information related to the causes and treatments for cancer.   Since the 1980s his laboratory has focused on understanding how cell division is controlled. This laboratory participated in some of the critical observations upon which our basic understanding of cancer growth is based. Currently, his laboratory in Cleveland OH is focused upon identifying a novel cancer treatment strategy, based upon observations made in his laboratory.   Andrew Stacey, M.D., M.S., is an Ophthalmologist at the Eye Institute at Harborview and a UW assistant professor of Ophthalmology. Dr. Stacey knows an appointment with your doctor can be stressful. He enjoys teaching patients about what he sees in their eyes and providing them with information and options. Dr. Stacey earned his M.D. at Ohio State and his M.S. at Brigham Young University, where he was a linebacker on the football team. He has authored many publications and book chapters related to ocular tumors and maintains numerous national and international research collaborations in the field.   "Lucy was born and raised in Seattle and attended Western Washington University, where she earned her degree in biochemistry. In 2021, she pursued her PhD at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. During her first year there, she was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma. This personal challenge inspired her to redirect her research focus towards the disease. Since her diagnosis in the fall of 2022, Lucy has been delving into the interactions between the immune system and ocular melanoma, aiming to improve the future of immunotherapies."   Email questions to contact@acureinsight.org   ANNOUNCEMENTS: 5K SITES ARE OPEN FOR REGISTRATION NEAR YOU!
