In this passage from Matthew's Gospel we see both Jesus' prophetic statement that He was "about to be delivered into the hands of men" and an interaction between Him and Peter regarding paying the Temple tax. Although seemingly unrelated, both of these events have much to teach us about Jesus' identity as the Son of Man. This sermon was preached at Legacy Reformed Baptist Church in East Grand Forks, MN. In Matthew 17 and in the parallel passage found in Mark 9, Jesus' disciples are unable to heal a boy possessed by a demon who often through him into the water or into the fire. After Jesus casts out the demon, He explains to His disciples that it is by faith — even faith the size of a mustard seed — that we can accomplish great things to the glory of God. After seeing Jesus in His glory standing with the prophet Elijah, the disciples were left with some big questions. They were confused about what it could mean that Jesus was the Messiah, but yet the scribes said that Elijah was supposed to come first. Listen to hear Jesus' answer. A sermon from Legacy Reformed Baptist Church in East Grand Forks, MN.
In this message we consider the significance of Elijah and Moses appearing with Christ during the Transfiguration, and how their presence signals an end to and fulfillment of the law and prophets. The disciples Peter, James, and John were privileged to witness a remarkable event known as the Transfiguration, in which Jesus' "face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light" and Elijah and Moses appeared with Him. Learn about what this event reveals about who Christ is in this sermon, the first of three messages on Matthew 17:1-13. In Romans 10, the apostle Paul declares that "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." After this glorious promise, he asks four rhetorical questions: "How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent?" This passage makes clear that having heard, believed, and called upon Christ ourselves, every Christian should be committed to going and proclaiming the excellencies of Christ to others. In Acts 2:22-36, the apostle Peter delivers a bold sermon declaring that Jesus, who had been crucified, had raised from the dead and that "that God has made him both Lord and Christ." In this sermon we see how the Old Testament points forward to this event and how Jesus' death and resurrection reveals Him to be Lord and Christ. Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem before His crucifixion was marked by both joy and sorrow. His followers rejoiced, proclaiming “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And yet Jesus expressed profound sorrow for those in Israel who rejected the Prince of Peace. His response of compassion for the lost should impact how we view those who reject God in our own day, desiring that they would find peace with God through Jesus Christ. In Matthew 16 Jesus makes use of His favorite self-designation: The Son of Man. In this passage we read that the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. In this sermon we consider the meaning of this judgment as well as what it means that "there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” This sermon was preached at Legacy Reformed Baptist Church in East Grand Forks, MN. The Christian life is not to be focused on self-fulfillment but self-denial. As Christ said to His disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." In this sermon we consider what this looks like practically in the life of the believer, and how we can maintain the proper perspective to focus on heavenly rather than earthly things. Scripture is clear that in this life we will all experience trials. God’s Word is equally clear that these trials are meant to refine us, purifying our faith and making us more like Christ. In this sermon on 1 Peter 1:3-7, we see that our hope is great, our trials are short, and our suffering is purposeful. Immediately after being commended by Jesus for recognizing Him to be the Messiah, Peter was then rebuked by Jesus for unwittingly being a stumbling block on His way to the cross. In this message on Matthew 16, we'll examine why Peter's limited view of God's plan caused him to be a hindrance rather than a help to Jesus and consider how we can avoid making similar errors. In Matthew 16, Jesus speaks of the "keys of the kingdom of heaven." What is meant by this phrase, and how does having the keys to bind and loose apply to the church today? Listen as we examine this important passage from Matthew's Gospel in this final sermon examining 16:13-20. This sermon was preached at Legacy Reformed Baptist Church in East Grand Forks, MN. In Titus 3:1-7, the apostle Paul is instructing Titus to remind these Christians of how they are to live lives pleasing to God in a pagan land. In doing so, he provides three reminders that are crucial for us as well as we seek to rightly engage the world around us. This sermon was preached at Legacy Reformed Baptist Church. Jesus declared that He would build His church, and that "the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." But what exactly does this mean, and why do some versions of Scripture say 'hell' while others say 'hades'? Listen as we examine this important promise that Christ has made His church. This sermon was preached at Legacy Reformed Baptist Church in East Grand Forks, MN. For more information, visit LegacyRBC.org.
In Matthew 16, Christ says "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church..." But what does this mean? Does the 'rock' upon which Christ will build His church refer to Himself, to Peter, or to Peter's confession that Jesus is the Christ? Listen to this sermon on Matthew 16:13-20 as we explore this important question. This sermon was preached at Legacy Reformed Baptist Church in East Grand Forks, MN. Visit LegacyRBC.org to learn more.
When asked by Jesus "Who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” To this Jesus responded “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven." In this sermon on Matthew 16:13-20 we examine just how remarkable it is that Peter recognized and confessed Jesus of Nazareth to be the long-awaited Messiah.
After condemning the adulterous generation epitomized by the Pharisees and Sadducees who had come out to challenge Jesus, He and His disciples headed out across the lake. One they way, Jesus gave the disciples a warning that they did not immediately understand. They were to beware the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. That is, they were to guard themselves against their teaching. The teaching that marked the spirit of that age. We must learn the lesson of Jesus’ warning. We must be guarded both against the kind of errors that marked the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees, as well as understand the spirit of this age and guard ourselves against the prevalent dangers we now face. A sermon preached by Pastor Caleb Stomberg at Legacy Reformed Baptist Church in East Grand Forks, MN on 1/14/2024.
In Matthew 16:1-4 we see the Pharisees and the Sadducees teaming up to challenge Christ. Despite their animosity towards each other, these groups found common cause in seeking to suppress the influence of Jesus. Sadly, we continue to see this in our own day as worldviews which would otherwise be at odds with one another unite in their opposition to God and His Word. In this message we'll see how Christ responded to these groups and how Christians should respond today. This sermon was preached at Legacy Reformed Baptist Church in East Grand Forks, MN. As we start the year, it is good for us to remind ourselves that whatever we face in the days to come, God's ways are better than our ways. He is working in ways we can't comprehend to bring about His glory and our good. We can trust in Him and choose contentment and joy in Him no matter what His good providence may bring.
