Saving Grace

Saving Grace

2026-02-1826:20

“You keep running for another place To find that saving grace” probably doesn’t hit in the same place for most Pettyheads as “Most things I worry about never happen anyway” but I think there’s a comparable profundity to it. That search for spiritual, or social, or emotional redemption is a journey and one that can often feel just out of reach and unattainable, but you run on anyway. Maybe it isn’t given equal billing with the sensational line in Crawling Back to You because this song is more of an uptempo rocker rather than a baleful mid tempo ballad. Either way, it’s another excellent line that examines the human condition without either prescribing a remedy or casting any judgement.Song : https://youtu.be/vPYFWnzjIy0 REFERENCED IN THE EPISODEJudge Timbers: https://youtu.be/RVFSiRUAkys Jack McNey - Turn this Car Around : https://youtu.be/SGhvLR6dCiw Honest and Unmerciful Podcast: https://tinyurl.com/ysz3cd2d Boogie Chillen : https://youtu.be/w512YXe75mgDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Hitting the Highway

Hitting the Highway

There’s a languidity that floats through a lot of this record; Square One, Night Driver, Turn this Car Around, This Old Down, and The Golden Rose... These are songs to cruise to. They’re songs to be chewed on and savoured rather than hastily gulped down. You can feel the evening sun warming your skin as you drive, with the top down, listening to this album before arriving at a house in the woods, where you the songs become much more a cellar aged cognac in front of the fire than they are a light beer on the patio. There’s a depth and colour to the album overall that ties the whole together sonically rather than thematically.Check out the "Eat the Pudding" Podcast here! The wonderful John Paulsen is back to talk all things Last DJ! John actually saw one of the two dates at the Olympic, so I get to ask him about that, we dive into the potential reasons why we've never had any previously unreleased tracks surface from this album (including the mysterious Maggie song!), and why half a concept album might not have landed with a wider listening audience. As always, this was an incredibly enjoyable chat and I hope you dig it as much as I did!Don't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.If you want to find John, you can catch him over on Bluesky at: https://bsky.app/profile/4for4-john.bsky.socialFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Can't Stop the Sun

Can't Stop the Sun

Everything about this song appeals to me. The soft-loud dynamic of the verse and chorus, coupled with the 4/4 3/4 switch from verse to chorus, along with the minor to major switch. It’s just perfectly internally oppositional. The bridge is one of my very favourites that we have in the entire catalogue with that swinging half funk groove and that outro is just absolutely fire. Can’t Stop the Sun brings in all the conflict and anger that Tom has projected through parts of this album and turns it against itself by becoming a final statement of resolve and indestructible self-reliance. It’s a perfect end to a perfect album. Vinyl Review 2025

2026-01-1439:22

It’s that time of year for me to look back at what I was listening to in the past twelve months and give you some recommendations! I’ve listened to a ton of music in the past year, plenty of which was new to me. Gainesville exposed me to a ton of new indie artists, some of whom I’ve had the good fortune to speak to. I did decide to limit this to only vinyl albums I bought this year, rather than being albums that were released this year. Also, I should call out the Live Anthology RSD release which I picked up but, I’ll most likely be talking about that record as part of a review of the Live Anthology somewhere down the road, so I haven’t included it in this year’s list! Plus, you already know it!Albums included in this episode:Chris Rea - AubergeVangelis - 1492 - Conquest of ParadiseLady Gaga - MayhemSt Vincent - All Born ScreamingClutch - Sunrise on Slaughter BeachMargo Price - Hard Headed WomanJarvis Cocker - Further ComplicationsDream Theatre - Metropolis Pt 2. Steve Ursell is back to run through my ten questions and give me his thoughts on his favourite album, which version of Walls he prefers, and which song he'd want to cover with the Heartbreakers. Steve picks a fantastic British artist to cover a Tom Petty song, he picks a great gig to want to go back to see, and a certain autobiography may have coloured his choice for favourite Heartbreaker, other than Tom. Steve Ursell

This week, before we wrap up the last song from The Last DJ, I’m sharing a conversation that I had with an English gent that I met through my Queen podcast and someone I’ve gotten to know a little over the last two or three years named Steve Ursell. Steve has kinda been discovering Tom’s catalogue in real time through this podcast, so I thought it would be really interesting to talk to someone who wasn’t a Pettyhead three years ago but has come to love the Heartbreakers in a fairly short space of time. So, we get into that journey into Petty and how the podcast has played a part in that discovery. We chat about Pink Floyd, Rush, and Queen, and we ruminate on the decline of tastemakers in the world of rock and roll, and on whether we’re ever going to see a grunge or Britpop–style movement again in the years to come: especially with the decline of free-form radio and the rise of the all-powerful algorithm. Robin Vincent is back to give me her answers to my ten questions. You wouldn't necessarily think that World of Warcraft would play a significant role in defining Robin's favourite album, she drops a bombshell on me about a couple of singers she just doesn't jive with and her answer to my question about which song she'd join Tom and the boys on stage for is perhaps the best answer anyone's given yet to any question I've asked! Oh and Robin divulges a daring escapade which brought her in direct contact with one of Mike's Telecasters.Robin Shakedown links:Floor Goddess EP at Bandcamp : https://robinshakedown.bandcamp.com/album/floor-goddessRobin Shakedown on Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/robin.shakedown/Shadows and Sun (Music Video) : https://youtu.be/-DQhRQRsvzMNote: There is some very infrequent profanity in this episode.Follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Today’s bonus episode is a fantastic chat with another artist I was very fortunate to see perform down at the Tom Petty Weekend in Gainesville. Robin Vincent, whose band, Robin Shakedown was one of the most vibrant, energetic and very very cool acts from the weekend. I had to reach out to see if she’d be willing to talk to me about her love for Tom and his music and subsequently, found and fell in love with her latest EP, Floor Goddess, which is an epic roller coaster of melody, hooks, emotion, and righteous anger. We talk about Robin's foundational love of Tom's music, how she constructs her setlists, and the way her band came together for the Tom Petty Weekend. I give Robin my interpretation of how she holds her guitar vs how Shine holds hers and we talk about identity and the pressure of having to play the game to fit in. Finally, we go deep into Floor Goddess; where the songs come from, where Robin drew her inspiration from and how she built the feel and sonic palate for the record.Song and links mentioned in the episode:Floor Goddess EP at Bandcamp : https://robinshakedown.bandcamp.com/album/floor-goddessRobin Shakedown on Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/robin.shakedown/Shadows and Sun (Music Video) : https://youtu.be/-DQhRQRsvzMNote: There is some very infrequent profanity in this episode.Follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. The DJ comes back and the ditch he’s digging, to keep the flames from the temple, are the songs and the culture he’s trying to build around his freeform station to stop outside corporate influence from burning down his integrity and his artistic vision, which are his temple. He’s the Last DJ: he’s digging this ditch around rock and roll to protect it from the superficial and the formulaic and he’s digging this ditch for all of us!Song and links:Song : https://youtu.be/tMxLxPk97GA Three Men in a Van : https://shows.acast.com/three-men-in-a-van Follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Ten questions, ten answers. Matt Burke is back to let me know which artists he'd most like to see open for Tom and the Heartbreakers and he throws a little love Joe Walsh's way while he's at it! His cover song is an interesting choice and he wonders if subconsciously he picked it because it's already happened and we sign off with three VERY good words to describe Tom Petty!Don't forget to check out the new Voyager Golden EP from Have Gun, Will Travel and follow Matt and the boys all over social media! Today’s episode is a part of my artist conversation series and is a wonderful chat I had with songwriter for and lead singer of Have Gun, Will Travel. For those of you who were down in Gainesville for the Tom Petty Weekend, you probably say Matt and the guys play their killer set on Sunday afternoon. This one ranges all over the map. We do discuss Tom Petty’s influence on Matt’s songwriting, but we also talk about the band’s fantastic new Voyager Golden EP! We also head into all sorts of interesting side roads leading to Ennio Morricone, Davids Bowie and Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Carl Sagan, and even Ernest Shackleton! In last week’s outro I’d intimated that I hear a strong resemblance between this song and another favourite band of mine, The Kinks. So first of all, just sonically, if it walks like The Kinks and kinda quacks like The Kinks… it’s most likely inspired by The Kinks. That super cool key change into that second bridge section owes absolutely as much to the type of sharp left turns that Ray Davies would often write into his songs as it does the Sgt Pepper nod that I gave the song. Growing up in England, there’s a nostalgic end-of-the-pier quality to this song that Ray and The Kinks were unparalleled at evoking in a contemporary way.Song and links:You and Me : https://youtu.be/TtETKaTpMg4Tom with George Drakoulias : https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOtLeEfDlli/Rock Court (I am the presiding "Judge"!) : https://shows.acast.com/rock-courtFollow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Sam Krishnan is back to answer my ten questions! He gives me his "boring answer" (his words!) to the question "Who is your favourite Heartbreaker other than Tom?" and then gives me his deep cut answer. He also surprised me with his answer to which artist he'd like to see cover a Tom Petty song. We chat about Into the Great Wide Open and the production on that album and we basically just fanboy all over Tom, as is our wont! Today’s episode is another bonus artist conversation that I had with a young French songwriter who’s currently based in England, performing under the name “Bye Lily”. Sam Krishnan started out thinking he was probably going to become a rapper, but through a circuitous route, that we discuss, found his way around to Tom Petty, the guitar, and a very contemporary spin on indie folk music. Sam's debut EP, Voicenotes, features a tribute song to Tom which includes a blazing guitar solo from Jake Thistle. We chatted for a good couple of hours and the first part of this conversation is what you’ll be listening to today and as always, I’ve split out his answers to my ten questions which will drop tomorrow!Song and links mentioned in the episode:My Hero : https://youtu.be/TeFCs0gy3KEVoicenotes EP : https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mdsxl9PR7h0oBcEB_wRJbLDa_5j3s8XmMBuy the EP at Bandcamp : https://byelily.bandcamp.com/album/voicenotesFollow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. You and Me

You and Me is another “Little song”, if we use Ivan Anderson’s brilliant concept of what that means. It doesn’t shoot for the moon, doesn’t explore nuanced or clever or grand themes. It’s a singular expression of companionship and love with a healthy dose of insecurity to humanize it. It’s a simple arrangement with some beautiful piano work and a very cool bass part that moves around that brisk backbeat in a lively fashion.Song and links:You and Me : https://youtu.be/RrdKLxtw2Fo=38 Years Old (The Tragically Hip) : https://youtu.be/ICHPKx6KJSMI Want You (Bob Dylan) : https://youtu.be/-iIS6ZZ9RVASchool of Hip : https://shows.acast.com/school-of-hipFollow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Shine is back to answer my Ten Questions! She draws a brilliant parallel from Fault Lines to big band music, we ruminate on the brilliance of Mike Campbell and Shine shares her experience of being side stage during Speaker Wars' performance at least year's Tom Petty Weekend in Gainesville!Song and links:Shine's Insta : https://www.instagram.com/shineandtheshakers/On Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/ShineandtheShakersWoman's Plight : https://www.instagram.com/reel/DRNRn4ej4Bc/* Image generously provided by Shawn Murphy of the Tom Petty Trail: https://tompettytrail.com/Follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. This special bonus episode of the podcast is a conversation I had with the wonderful Brian Ruskin of the Honest and Unmerciful Record Review Podcast. As well as co-hosting one of my favourite shows, Brian is a prolific musician who has released over a dozen albums of his own material. We're taking a sylistic detour today however as we plunge headlong into the world of electronic music, loops, samples, heavily processed guitars, and found sounds! But don't worry, we have a fantastic guide! We talk about how discovering his music unlocked a part of my musical brain I didn’t even know existed and Brian was absolutely brilliant in articulating his creative process and his background in getting to this stage in his creative life.Song and links relevant to the episode:Mental Heatlh Consumer @ Bandcamp: https://mentalhealthconsumer.bandcamp.com/The new album The Echoes I Sent: https://mentalhealthconsumer.bandcamp.com/album/the-echoes-i-sentLinkhub for links to streaming platforms and press: https://music.imusician.pro/a/xDnwUJqNLabel: EC Underground: https://ecunderground.bandcamp.com/Far Above the World Tonight: https://mentalhealthconsumer.bandcamp.com/album/far-above-the-world-tonightHonest and Unmerciful Record Review Podcast: https://honest-unmerciful-record-review.podbean.com/Follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. From the horse capital of the world to the main stage in Gainesville! This week's episode is a fantastic freewheeling chat that I had with the inimitable Shine, who I had the privilege of seeing perform at the Tom Petty Weekend and the greater pleasure spending an hour and change getting to know over Zoom. Like all the true originals, Shine has a way of expressing herself that imprints on you. She'll make you laugh (we talk about that!) and can make you cry with both her voice and with her intimate relationship with her guitar. But most of all, she'll make you sit forward in your seat and pay attention! We talk about growing up with Gospel and Bob Marley, competing in band competitions, and formal training vs just putting in the hours! We also discuss not overanalyzing what you're doing and being really present in the moment. I hope this comes across in our conversation because this just felt like a chat between two old friends and it was so much fun!Song and links mentioned in the episode:Shine's Insta : https://www.instagram.com/shineandtheshakers/On Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/ShineandtheShakersWoman's Plight : https://www.instagram.com/reel/DRNRn4ej4Bc/Follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Blue Sunday

Blue Sunday

For an hour or so, with the sun starting to make it’s way to the basement to sleep, we drove in relative silence. Zoey’s mood seemed to darken with the sky. Or that’s the way it felt. I asked if there was anything wrong, she said, "Nothin' worth talkin' 'bout".And that’s how it was for a while. A blue Sunday, Down the interstate. Blue, with shades of grey, and orange as the light began to fade. After a while, she turned to me and with a serious expression and asked me “You ever found it funny Jack, how a crowd gathers around anyone living life without a net?” Then she let go of the steering wheel and closed her eyes. That was the day I met Zoey. There’s a lot more to tell, but I’ll save that for another time.Song and links mentioned in the episode:Song : https://youtu.be/jUUpkMNU3_4 Jake Thistle live stream : https://youtu.be/pTIWCDHC1BY?t=313 Follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectBoneless Podcast Network : https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.appThe theme song is provided by my very best friend Randy Woods.
