At the Hobson Institute, we’re dedicated to exploring holistic approaches to health, with a strong focus on how breathing impacts overall well-being. In a recent Breathing Lab session, I had the pleasure of interviewing Patrick McKeown—a leading expert on breathing techniques and the Buteyko Breathing Method. Patrick shared with our listeners how simple changes in the way we breathe can help manage conditions such as asthma, sleep disorders, and anxiety.Key Highlights from Our Podcast DiscussionUnderstanding the Unified AirwayWe explored the concept of the unified airway—the idea that the entire respiratory system is interconnected. This understanding is essential when addressing sleep and breathing issues. For example, mouth breathing increases airway resistance, which can impair sleep quality and affect overall health.Supporting Children with Anxiety and Breathing IssuesChildren’s breathing habits can have a profound effect on their mental and emotional health. We discussed the importance of assessing children for both anxiety and dysfunctional breathing patterns. Gentle nasal breathing techniques, a calm and reassuring clinical environment, and tools like MyoTape can support better sleep and reduce anxiety by encouraging nasal breathing. The Benefits of Mouth TapingMouth taping can help promote nasal breathing during sleep. Breathing Techniques to Manage AnxietyWe also discussed how specific breathing practices—such as reducing breathing volume and encouraging nasal breathing—can help regulate carbon dioxide levels, promoting calm and relaxation. While results may take time, consistency and patience with these techniques can lead to meaningful improvements in anxiety symptoms. How to Learn More For Healthcare ProfessionalsIf you're a clinician interested in integrating these techniques into your practice, consider taking my Intro to Airway Evaluation and Treatment Course. In this course, I share how I’ve combined the Buteyko Breathing Method with myofunctional therapy, cranial nerve integration, and physical therapy into a comprehensive approach. In this episode, Dr. Jenny Hobson and Dr. Martha Cortes DDS explain the interrelation between airway centric physical therapy and airway centric dentistry with several case studies, highlighting the complex oral-systemic connection. Dr. Cortes shares how she treats many oral symptoms, such as crowded teeth including examining the patients nasal function with Rhinomanometry. In most cases, she finds thedysfunctional breathing pattern is often the catalyst to the oral problem. Once Dr. Cortes has fixed the issue, Dr. Jenny stresses the importance of myofunctional therapy, to support the ‘architecture’ that Dr. Cortes has created. Otherwise, patients could experience additional complications. Newly published research shows how a simple dental device called the "Aqualizer" can help reduce back and other pain for participants by balancing out pelvis asymmetry, which causes leg length discrepancy, and reducing any occlusal (bite) interferences when it is in use.In this episode, Dr. Jenny Hobson reviews the "Aqualizer" study she conducted with Bill Esser, PT, which was published in the peer reviewed Journal of Craniomandibular & Sleep Practice. Co-hosted with Dr. Martha Cortes, they discuss the design of study with Bill Esser and Ira Shapira, DDS and how it’s ground breaking results will lead to even more important research for the PT and Dental fields to collaborate on. Dr. Shapira said, "Dr. Hobson’s pilot study should lead to far more extensive studies to connect craniomandibular function to whole body posture and reduction in medical expenses." In this episode, Dr. Jenny Hobson and Dr. Martha Cortes interview Cynthia Stein, PT. Learn from this skilled physical therapist how this technique can change the lives of people with post-concussion syndrome, difficulty breathing through the nose, headaches and TMD patients and more. Both Dr. Jenny Hobson and Dr. Martha Cortes have taken Cynthia’s course. Dr. Jenny has had amazing results by utilizing this technique with Cranial Osteopathic Functional manual medicine and vestibular therapy for her post concussion patients. They review the different types of concussion and what actually happens to the brain when one experiences a concussion; how our soldiers can develop PTSD from blast wave injury, the history of the nasal release technique and how it got its start. Then learn how to evaluate facial asymmetry, and examine eye restrictions. Following this each student is taught how to do the procedure on themselves to decrease their own cranial suture impaction. You'll find out what the normal treatment is for concussion and what it should be with the nasal release technique, vestibular rehab, cranial osteopathic manual medicine, eye strengthening exercises, and lymphatic drainage. Dr. Jenny, Dr. Cortes and Cynthia Stein, PT, MEd will share their upcoming research project to evidence base this remarkable procedure. In this episode Dr. Jenny Hobson will be interviewing Dr. Karen Parker Davidson, RN, an expert in rhinomanometry. Rhinomanometry measures air pressure and the rate of airflow during breathing. These measurements are then used to calculate nasal airway resistance which is important in the field of airway treatment. So many of us don’t realize that our noses are actually the problem, and we need to work on improving the ability to breathe out of it. Many of us have a bend in our nose called a deviated septum which narrows our nasal passages. Slowly but surely, this causes us to breathe through our mouth and the beginning of an airway compromise. Learn about the history of rhinomanometry, what normal values look like and where to find this testing. Dr. Davidson will review the key output parameters and what the data means.BIO: Dr. Karen Davidson has held many positions in the medical device industry for more than 25 years, specifically in the ENT and Sleep markets, in addition to more than 30 years of clinical experience including service as a Flight Nurse in the United States Air Force Reserves and committee member for various Otolaryngology meetings. Dr. Davidson serves as the Vice President at GM Instruments, Ltd. with a special interest in and published on the technology of objective nasal measurements, nasal physiology, clinical application, reimbursement, health economics, and health policy. Dr. Davidson is a national speaker for the series “The Nose Knows: Nasal Function and Resistance”.
