Addiction: Iggy Pop

Addiction: Iggy Pop

2022-06-2952:51

Show Notes Iggy Pop is the alter-ego created by musician Jim Osterberg. Iggy is mostly known for being the excentric and violent lead singer of the STOOGES and for the albums he recorded with David Bowie. He is also often referred to as the Father of Punk. Iggy became famous not only for his new punk sound and his androgynous look but also for his antics on stage, which include cutting himself, rubbing himself with peanut butter, flashing the audience, humping various objects, and leaping into the audience. But these antics hid a painful addiction to drugs that sabotaged his career and his life for years. He nearly died numerous times. His music inspired David Bowe, Nirvana, The Clash, the Sex Pistols, the White Stripes, Nine-in-Nails, the Rollings Stones, Arrowsmith, and more. Show Notes Perhaps you remember seeing or hearing about the #ChallengeAccepted movement that launched in the Western World in July of 2020. It often took the form of women posting black and white photos of themselves on social media with the hashtag. Some of you may have shared such a post. For most people, it was simply a women's empowerment movement. #WomenSupporting Women However, the movement was meant to be so much more. It started during protests in Turkey following the femicide of Pinar Gültekin, a 27-year-old who was found dead on July 21 after being murdered by her ex-boyfriend. Pinar's death marked the 50th femicide to happen in Turkey in 2020 alone. The idea behind a woman sharing a black and white photo of herself is that she could be next. She could be the next victim of femicide, which means murdering someone because they are a woman. No woman is safe. The black and white photos represent how pictures of murdered victims of gender violence end up in black and white in newspapers. Femicide is a frightening misogynistic control weapon used against women by their partners and male relatives to keep them in life. A frightening example is the attempted femicide of a woman known as Bertilla, an alias, in Santa Cruz, Costa Rica. She barely survived after her boyfriend beat her with an ax. She is using an alias because her perpetrator is still free and she still fears for her life. Also... your car temperature gauge is meant to measure the temperature of your engine. Aaron "Road Kill" Saxon Well it was just a matter of coincidence that Whitney met Aaron at Fisher's Brewery when Aaron approached her dog, Layla. This big bearded man had the softest and nicest approach to Layla, who is wary of males to begin with. Immediately Whitney saw his leathers and tattoos on the tops of his fingers spelling "ROAD KILL". Because Whitney has no filter and a lack of social skills, she immediately said, "Oh! You've got a story, I've gotta know about this tattoo." Well, thankfully Aaron is a nice guy and was willing to meet to tell his survivor story. Boy was it intense! We feel that his story was so compelling that we will be creating a Patreon Episode intervewing him exclusively where you can hear his first hand account of escaping death. Mass Shooting Survivor: Maddy Wilford Mass shootings are becoming so common that we are becoming desensitized. But their lives will never be the same for the victims' family members and the survivors. When the news covers these mass shootings, they mention the number of people killed and injured. However, what does it truly mean to survive being shot with an AR-15? To illustrate the vast damage an AR-15 will cause to the human body, this episode covers the story of Maddy Willford. She survived the Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School shooting in Parkland, Florida on February 14, 2018. The shooter killed 14 students and 3 staff members and wounded 17 others. However, Maddy was the most critically wounded after being shot 4 times with an AR-15. She didn’t have a pulse when the first responders reached her.     Learn more about how the Parkland shooting happened.   Remember the 17 Parkland shooting victims.    20 million AR-15 weapons have been sold to Americans. Learn more about the mass shooting at the Church in Southerland Springs, Texas. Wounds from an AR-15 are significantly worse than those from handguns and rifles. Watch the 60-minutes episode to learn more. Learn more about the “Stop the Bleed” program. Do you know about the Parkland Strong movement and the March for our Lives protest in Washington, D.C? The Parkland students rallied more than half a million people and galvanized support for approximately 67 new gun laws. Child Abuse-5 Girl Cousins This week we have a listener story that demonstrates the importance of believing children and contacting the proper authorities as soon as possible. Some people believe family values were much more intact in 1950s America than today. Sorry, but... wrong! The truth is, all families throughout history have had skeletons in closets and bad apples in the mix. Thankfully, priorities have finally started shifting as parents realize that it's much more important to protect their children than to hide dirty family secrets. The story of these five girl cousins who experienced sexual abuse at the hands of the same perpetrator while many of the adults around them pretended it wasn't happening shows the danger of failing to face hard truths. Take action! Perpetrators won't stop on their own and ignoring it won't make it go away. Gina Wehling-Being a Double Amputee was only the beginning Join us to hear the incredible and unbelievable survival story of Gina Wehling. At just two months old from a small village in Columbia, she was in a house fire that burned her legs so badly that they were amputated below the knee. Not having legs has been all she has known. As a child she grew up flying back and forth to America on her own with people she met that day. She would spend a significant amount of time away from her birth family and then return to them long enough to become malnourished. But that’s not all Gina experienced growing up. Snake Bite! Jeremy's Story https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/dreams-about-snakes-interpretations Get excited listeners! This week's episode is a bit on the lighter side. Do you have an irrational fear? Amanda reveals that she has an insane fear of snakes. At the start of the episode, she'll share a few examples of her crazy behaviors resulting from this fear. Cue Amanda knocking her baby sister over in an effort to flee a potential snake... that wasn't even there.    Given this fear, when Amanda discovered the story of a man who was bitten by the severed head of a rattlesnake.     In May of 2018, Jeremy Sutcliffe and his wife Jennifer were doing yardwork at their Texas home. Jennifer was working in a flowerbed and she reached down to pull out some grass growing around her flowers and she almost grabbed a four-foot-long Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. He reared up and she screamed. Jeremy grabbed a shovel and beheaded the snake.    About 10 minutes later, he bent down to dispose of the severed head, it reared up and bit him on the hand.    Apparently, rattlesnakes can attack for more than an hour after they’ve been beheaded. Their metabolisms are much slower than those of humans and their internal organs can stay alive for longer than ours. They become aggressive in the throes of death and fight in a last-ditch effort to survive.    By the time he was life-flighted to the hospital, Jeremy was going into septic shock. He survived a little worse for wear, but his story can serve as an important warning for others. However, experts say that people shouldn’t attempt to kill rattlesnakes on their own.    Cynthia Vigil Jeramillo: AE Killing Season: The Toy Box Killer -- https://www.avnblogfeed.com/2021/12/07/the-killing-season-bonus-the-toy-box-killer-season-1-episode-7-ae/ Cynthia-vigil.com   Broken in the Best Possible Way by Jenny Lawson: https://www.amazon.com/Broken-best-possible-Jenny-Lawson/dp/1250812488/ref=asc_df_1250812488/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=532483928592&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5082960414213813934&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9052441&hvtargid=pla-1390246080178&psc=1   This is what a sage grouse looks like: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Greater_Sage-Grouse/id   They do commonly attack humans: https://www.adirondackalmanack.com/2012/06/the-attack-of-the-ruffed-grouse.html     Follow us on social media:  facebook.com/stillhere.podcast.21/  instagram.com/stillhere_podcast/    Become a member on Patreon: patreon.com/stillherepod    Donate to our tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/stillhere    Produced by WayGood Creative and Rocketskates Recording: rocketskatesrecording.com   Support #StillHere: A Survivor Podcast by contributing to their Tip Jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/stillhere   Find out more at https://stillhere.pinecast.co   Send us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/stillhere/ba35e87b-71c0-4019-83da-b026f07e1b0b   This podcast is powered by Pinecast.     Sources: The Florida Times-Union: https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/2018/06/07/texas-man-decapitated-rattlesnake-it-bit-him-anyway-and-he-nearly-died-his-wife-says/11930338007/   Reader's Digest: https://www.rd.com/article/the-snakes-revenge/   An article in the Washington Post by Allyson Chiu:  https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/2018/06/07/texas-man-decapitated-rattlesnake-it-bit-him-anyway-and-he-nearly-died-his-wife-says/11930338007/   Channel 3 News in Texas: https://www.kiiitv.com/article/news/local/one-year-later-corpus-christi-man-still-recovering-after-being-bitten-by-severed-rattlesnake-head/503-ca8bbb5b-20b6-443d-baee-132aa1624ba5   lifescience.com https://www.livescience.com/62771-decapitated-rattlesnake-bites-man.html   dreammoods.com   mindbodydream.com Support #StillHere: A Survivor Podcast by contributing to their tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/stillhere Find out more at https://stillhere.pinecast.co This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
