In this episode of the Your Golf Performance Podcast, I sit down with PGA Master Professional Christopher Smith — a 3-time Teacher of the Year, Golf Digest Top Instructor, and Guinness World Record holder in Speedgolf. With nearly four decades of coaching experience, Christopher shares how his philosophy has evolved and why most golfers are practicing the wrong way. We dive into block vs random practice, how to structure training if you only have three hours a week, and what truly separates elite performers from the pack — from juniors right through to the Rory’s and Scottie’s of the world. We also explore what Speedgolf taught him about scoring, rhythm, and decision-making — and how traditional golfers can benefit from it. This week I want to share a really interesting lesson from a coaching session that opened up a bigger conversation about performance. I had a client who has been improving really nicely. His swing is trending in the right direction, contact is better, and overall ball flight has improved. But there was still one big frustration… inconsistency with his irons. So we put him on the launch monitor. With his 7 iron, his carry distance was ranging anywhere from 109 metres to 141 metres. That’s a 32-metre gap with the same club. For any golfer, that’s nearly the difference between being on the green or in a bunker over the back. Now here’s where it gets interesting. I grabbed a different 7 iron — something I felt was better suited to his speed and delivery. Same player. Same swing. Same session. Suddenly his carries were between 138 metres and 143 metres. Tight window. Predictable. Repeatable. Nothing magical happened to his technique in those 10 minutes. The difference? Equipment. In this episode we talk about:Why inconsistency isn’t always a swing issueHow launch monitor data can expose hidden problemsThe role shafts, loft, and head design play in distance controlWhy guessing your yardages can cost you shots every roundSometimes we beat ourselves up thinking our swing is broken… when in reality, the tools we’re using might be working against us. If you’ve ever felt like you “flush one” and it comes up 20 metres short — this episode is for you.We thank Titleist - The number 1 brand in golf for their continued support of the YGP Podcast!🚨 Podcast Partner: TRUE PROTEINI’m proud to partner with TRUE PROTEIN, the go-to supplement brand trusted by elite athletes and weekend warriors alike. Wednesday Wisdom ⛳️🌍 — The Real Benefits of a Golf Trip Away This week’s Wednesday Wisdom came off the back of one of the most enjoyable golf trips I’ve ever had — heading over to the North Island of New Zealand and experiencing some of the best golf courses in the world. But it wasn’t just about the views, the laughs, or the bucket-list rounds… it really highlighted the performance benefits of getting away from your home club and testing your game in different conditions. One of the biggest takeaways? 👉 Your wedges that work beautifully at home… might be completely wrong elsewhere. At your home club you get used to:• The firmness of the turf• Grass type around the greens• How the club interacts with the ground• Bounce and grind matching your conditions Then you jump on a plane and suddenly you’re faced with:• Tight links lies• Different sand textures• Grainy or wispy grass• Firmer or softer turf And all of a sudden, those trusty wedges can feel like they’ve got the wrong bounce, wrong sole, or wrong leading edge for the job. That’s where golf trips become one of the best learning environments you can get. You start to:• Develop adaptability• Learn new shot options• Understand turf interaction better• Get creative around greens• Build real on-course problem-solving skills It’s why the best players in the world travel so well — they’ve learned to adjust their equipment and technique to suit the conditions in front of them. Personally, the North Island trip was unforgettable. World-class golf, incredible landscapes, and a constant reminder that golf isn’t played in a vacuum — it’s played on different grasses, in different winds, and on different soils. So if you ever get the chance to take your game on the road… Do it. Because the lessons you learn away from home might be the ones that improve your scoring the most when you return. We thank Titleist - The number 1 brand in golf for their continued support of the YGP Podcast!🚨 Podcast Partner: TRUE PROTEINI’m proud to partner with TRUE PROTEIN, the go-to supplement brand trusted by elite athletes and weekend warriors alike. In this episode, I sit down with someone who was a genuine club legend when I was growing up at New Brighton Golf Club — Rob Willis. Rob’s playing career is highlighted by winning the 1988 NSW Amateur Championship before making the jump into professional golf, competing on the Australian Tour and gaining opportunities to play overseas. We dive into what tournament golf was really like in his era — the nerves, the pressure, the practice habits, and what it was like teeing it up alongside some of the game’s biggest names. Rob also shares honest reflections on what he would have done differently with today’s knowledge, how his understanding of performance has evolved over 30+ years in the game, and how he knew it was time to walk away from full-time tour life. This is a brilliant conversation full of perspective for competitive golfers, juniors chasing the dream, and anyone who loves the journey of the game.We thank Titleist - The number 1 brand in golf for their continued support of the YGP Podcast!🚨 Podcast Partner: TRUE PROTEINI’m proud to partner with TRUE PROTEIN, the go-to supplement brand trusted by elite athletes and weekend warriors alike. Ever jumped into a new car and suddenly the hand brake is gone… replaced by a foot brake? You know how to drive. You know how to stop. But for a while, everything feels awkward, slow, and uncomfortable. In this episode, we talk about why learning new habits and skills always feels worse before it feels better — whether that’s changing something in your golf swing, your practice habits, or even something as simple as adapting to a new car. We break down how the brain actually learns new patterns, why performance often dips during change, and why so many people quit right before the breakthrough happens. If you’ve ever felt frustrated trying to change a habit — in golf or in life — this episode will help you understand why that feeling is normal and how to push through it the smart way.
In this episode, I’m joined by Australian professional golfer Adam Bland, a multiple-time international tour winner who’s competed across Australasia, Japan, Europe, and North America. Adam takes us inside what it’s really like to win on tour — from the emotions and nerves coming down the stretch on Sunday, to standing over shots that can change your career. We break down what he was thinking on the final few holes, how he managed pressure in winning moments, and what separated his best weeks from the rest. We also dive into the grind of life as a touring professional, the realities aspiring pros don’t see, and the lessons Adam now passes on after transitioning into coaching at Glenelg Golf Club. This is a must-listen for junior golfers, parents, and serious players who want an honest look at what it takes to close tournaments and survive professional golf.We thank Titleist - The number 1 brand in golf for their continued support of the YGP Podcast!🚨 Podcast Partner: TRUE PROTEINI’m proud to partner with TRUE PROTEIN, the go-to supplement brand trusted by elite athletes and weekend warriors alike. In this episode, Brent sits down with Nick Chertock — an accountant by trade, lifelong mid-handicap golfer, and one of the most influential non-coaches in the golf instruction world. As co-founder of Open Forum, Nick has spent the last 10–20 years immersed in conversations with some of the best golf coaches on the planet, asking the questions many golfers and coaches never think to ask. Despite not being a touring professional or teaching full-time, Nick has become a trusted connector, discussion starter, and advocate for smarter golf improvement. In this conversation, Brent and Nick dive into what Nick has learned from decades of observing elite coaches, whether all that knowledge has actually improved his own golf game, and the dangers of information overload for both golfers and instructors. They also share behind-the-scenes stories from time spent around world-class coaches, explore how great coaches filter information differently, and discuss where golf instruction is heading next. This episode is a must-listen for golfers and coaches who want to cut through the noise, think more clearly, and improve with intention rather than overwhelm.Open Forum WebsiteFollow Nick on Insta We thank Titleist - The number 1 brand in golf for their continued support of the YGP Podcast!🚨 Podcast Partner: TRUE PROTEINI’m proud to partner with TRUE PROTEIN, the go-to supplement brand trusted by elite athletes and weekend warriors alike. This episode is a little different — and that’s exactly why I wanted to do it.Today I’m joined by Jimmy Emanuel, a golf journalist, commentator, and podcaster who’s worked across Golf Australia magazines and spent years talking with some of Australia’s best golfers.Rather than coaching swing mechanics or tour prep, this conversation pulls back the curtain on how golf stories are told — and what players, parents, and coaches can learn from the media side of the game. We talk about:How Jimmy got into golf journalism and commentaryWhat he’s learned from interviewing elite Australian golfersWhat separates players who “make it” from those who don’t — from a journalist’s perspectiveHow golf media has changed with podcasts, social media, and digital platformsHow junior golfers and parents should think about media, storytelling, and the bigger golf ecosystemThe realities (and misconceptions) of working in golf mediaThis is a behind-the-scenes look at the game from someone who doesn’t coach or play professionally — but has seen the sport from angles most golfers never experience. Did junior golf suddenly feel easier, or did new pressures emerge? Mia shares honest insights into how she practices, how she handles nerves under pressure, and what she believes mattered most in her development as a junior golfer. We also talk about the role her dad played in her journey, how parents can best support their kids without adding pressure, and the lessons she’s learned along the way. The conversation finishes with Mia’s college commitment, the challenges she expects moving into college golf, how she’s preparing for the next level, and her advice for junior golfers chasing big goals. In this episode of Your Golf Performance Podcast, I’m joined by Ryan Smith, coach at the Sea Island Golf Performance Center, to dive deep into what it really takes to develop elite junior golfers. Ryan breaks down the structure of his Player Development Program, including how many hours juniors should be training each week and how to balance technical work, fitness, mental training, and on-course play. We discuss the key differences between players who win events and those who consistently struggle to make cuts, and the habits elite performers build that others simply don’t. We also explore the importance of competitive practice vs block practice, what Ryan learns most from watching his players compete on course, and the common mental and physical mistakes young golfers make under pressure. Ryan shares practical travel tips for tournaments, insights into strength and fitness development, and how he builds accountability and ownership in young players. Finally, we tackle a topic many parents will relate to — how to coach juniors who have access to everything but may lack work ethic or intrinsic motivation, and what parents should realistically expect when their child enters a long-term development program. In today’s Wednesday Wisdom, we dive into putting distances and what you should realistically expect to make—because most golfers dramatically overestimate how many putts they “should” hole. We break down the PGA Tour make percentages from common distances and show you why even the best players in the world don’t make everything outside short range. Understanding these numbers can instantly change how you react to missed putts and help you build a healthier mindset on the greens. You can stop beating yourself up over misses from outside your “money zone” and start focusing on speed control, start line, and high-quality practice that actually moves the needle. In this week’s Wednesday Wisdom, Brent tackles the most confusing scoring zone in golf — the dreaded 50–100 metre “No Man’s Land.” Most golfers guess at these shots… and that guesswork is costing them strokes every round. Brent breaks down a simple, tour-proven system built around your four wedges — pitching wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge, and lob wedge. You’ll learn how to develop three stock swings for each club — half, 75%, and full — and how to record your carry distances so you never stand over a wedge feeling unsure again. By the end of this episode, you’ll know how to build your own Wedge Matrix, a personalised chart that shows exactly how far each wedge flies with each swing length. This is one of the fastest ways to lower scores and take the mystery out of your distance wedges. If you’ve ever stood in “No Man’s Land” and hoped for the best… this episode will give you a plan you can trust.JOIN THE TITLEIST GIVEAWAY HEREWe thank Titleist - The number 1 brand in golf for their continued support of the YGP Podcast!🚨 Podcast Partner: TRUE PROTEINI’m proud to partner with TRUE PROTEIN, the go-to supplement brand trusted by elite athletes and weekend warriors alike.
