How much money do you really need to start a microschool—and how do you build a microschool or homeschool hybrid that is financially sustainable enough to last? In this episode of the Re-Dream Education Podcast, we’re talking about one of the most important—and sometimes most uncomfortable—parts of starting, running, and growing a microschool: MONEY. Money is the fuel behind the dream. Whether you’re starting a microschool in your home with a handful of students or growing an established homeschool hybrid with teachers, payroll, facilities, curriculum, and nearly 100 students, understanding your numbers matters. I’m taking you behind the scenes of my own journey—from starting Lighthouse Learning with just six students in my living room to building a growing microschool serving nearly 100 students. And I’m sharing the financial lessons I’ve had to learn along the way. We’re talking about what it really costs to start and operate a microschool, how to price tuition, understanding revenue versus profit, budgeting, payroll, cash flow, reserves, enrollment targets, founder compensation, the Profit First method, fundraising, grants, and why we eventually created a nonprofit foundation to help expand the mission beyond what tuition alone could support. Because more students don't automatically mean more profit. More revenue doesn't necessarily mean more money in the bank. And a growing school isn't automatically a financially sustainable school. We’ll also talk about the reality many women entrepreneurs face when starting businesses with limited capital—and why being passionate about your educational mission cannot mean remaining financially unaware. You do NOT have to be wealthy to start a microschool. But you do have to learn how to steward the money that comes through it. Your mission doesn't excuse you from learning money. What does it really take to start, build, grow, and sustain a successful microschool, homeschool hybrid program, or alternative education program? In this first episode of our Series, "The Real Work Behind Building a Microschool or Homeschool Hybrid" we’re going back to where every microschool begins: the dream. I went quiet on the podcast for a while—but the dream didn’t go quiet. It kept growing.
