Looking at both of these Psalms, we learn from David’s life. We see that when we confess our sins and accept forgiveness given to us through the cross, we find freedom on the other side. Then walking in that freedom we are able to share our testimony with others. This also leads to God’s desire with us - having a close relationship with Him. “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.” Psalm 51:12Semester Study Guide: Psalms Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 3 Teacher: Pastor Katrina SeversonPersonal ApplicationWhat’s one thing you will do differently after hearing this lesson? We are reading Psalm 139:1-18 each day. This week as we look into the book of Psalm 19, this lesson teaches that God reveals Himself through creation, His word and personal reflection, inviting us to look up in awe, look down to His Scriptures for guidance, and look forward for humility, repentance andsurrender to live rightly before Him.“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19:14Semester Study Guide: Psalms Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 2 Teacher: Pastor Daralee Utecht Personal ApplicationWhat’s one thing you will do differently after hearing this lesson? We are reading Psalm 139:1-18 each day. This week, we are asking the question “What or Whom do you trust?” Verses 1-6 talk about those that put their trust in wealth and money and the consequences of that false god. Verses 7-12 encourages us to trust instead in the one true God in patience and perseverance and we’ll talk about the final section at the end of our time together today.“Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near.” James 5:7-8, NIVSemester Study Guide: James Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 9 Teacher: Emily PahlMake It Yours: Prepare and Reflect Finish Strong! In this second half of Chapter 4, James teaches us the believers he was writing to that instead of living for themselves, God's grace is never ending. He reminds them, and us, that submitting and surrendering to the Lordship of Jesus and drawing near to God will in turn bring Him closer to you.“There's one Lawgiver who's able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?” James 4:12, NKJVSemester Study Guide: James Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 8 Teacher: Karla JohnsonMake It Yours: Prepare and Reflect Read James 5:1-12 at least twice in the coming week to prepare for next week’s teaching. This week in Chapter 4, we are reminded that humility brings us closer to God, but requires us to release our own desires as we submit to Him. In His infinite grace, God invites us to surrender, submit, lay down, and give over our own desires and selfishness and align ourselves with the life of Jesus and become a servant.“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7, NKJVSemester Study Guide: James Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 7 Teacher: Pastor Morgan HighMake It Yours: Prepare and Reflect Read James 4:11-17 at least twice in the coming week to prepare for next week’s teaching. In Chapter 3, verses 13-18 James talks about two kinds of wisdom: Worldly or earthly wisdom and heavenly or God’s wisdom. We all need wisdom but we want God’s wisdom.“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” James 3:17-18, NKJV Semester Study Guide: James Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 6 Teacher: Annie JuddMake It Yours: Prepare and Reflect Read James 4:1-10 at least twice in the coming week to prepare for next week’s teaching. In this first part of Chapter 3, James begins here by telling us that the tongue is actually an outward indication of inward maturity. Your tongue is small, but it carries great influence. As we direct the content of our hearts, we can change the impact, good or bad, of what comes out of our mouths.“But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.” James 3:8-10, NKJV Semester Study Guide: James Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 5 Teacher: Pastor Daralee UtechtMake It Yours: Prepare and Reflect Read James 3:13-18 at least twice in the coming week to prepare for next week’s teaching. This week we are learning what it really means to have faith alongside works and we’ll talk about low impact faith vs. high impact faith. Low impact faith believes, but High impact faith influences others, bringing them toward Jesus and builds the Kingdom of Heaven. Our belief, our faith in Him, should change our behavior.“What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?” James 2:14, NKJVSemester Study Guide: James Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 4 Teacher: Jummy BarlassMake It Yours: Prepare and Reflect Read James 3:1-12 at least twice in the coming week to prepare for next week’s teaching. As we head into the first part of Chapter 2 in the book of James, he teaches us that those who put their faith in Jesus simply cannot favor one person over another ever. Believers are to value that which is intrinsic, or internal, not what is external.“My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality.” James 2:1, NKJVSemester Study Guide: James Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 3 Teacher: Kristin PetersonMake It Yours: Prepare and Reflect Read James 2:14-26 at least twice in the coming week to prepare for next week’s teaching.Journal and expand on what you’ve learned this week and/or take notes of what you’re learning as you read the text and prepare for the coming week in the second half of Chapter 2.These teachings are available via video as well. We’re continuing our study of the Book of James with the second half of Chapter 1. This week we dive into phrases we’ve heard before, but want to truly activate within our faith: Being Quick to Listen and Slow to Speak. Not always an easy task, but easier with James teaches us about what is produced in us and how it is produced.“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” James 1:19-20, NIVSemester Study Guide: James Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 2 Teacher: Beth ZusiakMake It Yours: Prepare and Reflect Read James 2:1-13 at least twice in the coming week to prepare for next week’s teaching. Since the beginning of time, people have tried to search for the meaning of life and findtruth in this world. Although the world can seem lost and chaotic, now more than ever, God wants to use Christians to proclaim truth in this world. Today, truth is relative. It is searched for in just about anything and everything. You believe that, I will believe this. So, How do we make God known today, in our culture, where people are pursuing truth in so many other avenues?“So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, ‘Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious in all respects. For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, “TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.” Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything that is in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made by hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things…’” Acts 17:22-25, NASBSemester Study Guide: Acts Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 9 Teacher: Pastor Daralee UtechtDig Deeper this week: This season of Sisterhood is over but there is so much more to this book. As the writer of Acts, Luke was passionate about bringing the gospel to all people. One of Luke’s greatest goals in writing was to make sure we knew that Jesus, the Messiah that the Jewish people had waited so long for, is a Savior not only to the Jewish people, but to all of us!“But in every nation the person who fears God and does what is right [by seeking Him] is acceptable and welcomed by Him.” Acts 10:35, AMPSemester Study Guide: Acts Study Workbook | Sisterhood at River ValleyWeek 8 Teacher: Jimmy BarlassDig Deeper this week: Read Acts 13-17.
